Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Yes. Mark, being a spokesman for benelux territory only, as far as I know did not make any comments on availability of Eclair for Hero elsewhere on the planet.

gave up waiting and installed SensHero2.1 seems ok so far, go all the goodies i wanted from 2.1 so i am happy for now.

might look at this update but at the moment i think i will sick with the Custom ROM as i will also want 2.2 when it is out.

Question.
If I update to 2.1 does my data get wiped?
If yes, may I know how to backup everything? HTC sync doesn't seem to have any backup functions.

I have the HTC Hero on Ntelos, in my area Ntelos is owned by Sprint and the network Ntelos uses here is pretty much Sprint, though the phone is an Ntelos HTC Hero phone and not a sprint one. Does anyone know if this update is also available through Ntelos, if it's safe for an Ntelos user to update his phone with the sprint update etc?

I'm hoping to get 2.1 but am not going to mess my phone up to do so.

I updated my phone (perhaps foolishly) with the leaked ROM, though the version matches perfectly.
--> Kayshart: Your data on the phone will get wiped, but I removed my SD card prior to the update so all my media was safe. My contacts and calendar are stored with Google so I had no problem there, but my ringtone assignments were lost as well as my browser bookmarks.

What the [deleted by Mod] is going on with this thread, do people not understand what GSM means? I'm sick of reading about the Sprint and american crap, don't you have a Sprint forum specifically for it? We don't need to know about the sprint update as it doesn't add anything new to the plight of European Hero owners.

Ben

Not all American phones are on Sprint, one would assume the Generic HTC Hero forum was the place to go for any non sprint phone.

Right I'm turning rant mode on here.

How the F did sprint get this up date before the none carrier branded Hero GSM ??
Frankly this has narked me more than not actually getting it.

HTC are the most bizzare technology company I've had the misfortune to come across.
I've heard "oh its the carriers fault" "its googles fault" "its the hardwares fault" oh we are working v hard" "we need to get it right first"

All total bullshit. The fact remains that HTC seem to spend 90% of the time making slightly different hardware each day - nexus one vs incredible vs desire go figure that cats cradle out. 8% of the time cocking about on twitter (have a look at the htc russia twitter feed - yes i'm that sad) - 1% answering the same stupid tech questions, wrongly I may add (oh when is the Hero rom coming) Shouldnt they have slapped this in the FAQ at somepoint, btw the answer is when LOST makes sense. and 0.5% writing wank code for wank apps like animated clocks and weather. the rest of the time is lunch.

Even the pissing tea lady could have been trained to make the 2.1 update to work in the time google released the code and now.

Yes I know that its a bonus to get this update, but dont dangle the carrot in November if you dont set a date. I would have rather nothing was said and then bang tea lady works her magic and we all get 2.1 in june.

BTW if this doesnt drop in June I'm getting my red shirt and burning tyre and i'm off to HTC UK to blockade the lunch room.

just emailed htc about the 2.1 update and this is the reply i got from them..

Thank you for contacting HTC International. With reference to your query,HTC understands the concerns of Hero users and are now working to make available the Android 2.1 upgrade to our users in early June. The integration of Android 2.1 upgrade on the HTC Hero took longer to develop than anticipated and we apologize for this delay. We are committed to meeting our customers

I wager my box full of drawing pins that Sprint got a bit stroppy with HTC to pull thier finger out and get it working for there much bigger CDMA user base compared to the GSM.

I suspect that's pretty much, more or less, what's happened.

One wonders why it's taken HTC the best part of what will be six or seven months to get 2.1 working on the Hero when amateur coders are knocking out respectable custom ROMS in a fraction of the time. The answer is surely low priority.

Very true, but there are also quite a few Sprint-specific posts appearing in many of the threads in here. It's simply confusing and makes searching for information more difficult.

Agreed.

Not only is it confusing but not everyone is as clued up as many of the users on this board - more then a few GSM Hero owners were ready to brick their phone with the Sprint update.

I'm puzzled why this update needs to be in two parts

Surely the unbranded ROM is complete, well it must be because Sprint have released their customised version, why not just make it available on their website now for those who can with the OTA update later for the rest?

Flimsy excuse to say the least.

Does it mean that the first update is to get prepared so we dont have to reinstall the 2.1 OS, so we only need to update to the new 2.1 OS so then we can keep all our apps and dont have to do anything more once the 2.1 is installed. As before we would have reinstalled all the apps and settings to. Hope so.

I've heard a lot of stability and performance issues with Verizon's and Sprint's 2.1 ROM so maybe they released a buggy version due to pressure from their customers and HTC is really making sure that this final release is completely stable. The first update may be neccessary to iron out all the bugs before the 2.1 update.

GSM update?? i thought the latest ROM was only for Sprint users in the US????

It is as far as I'm aware.

This is the problem with HTC bowing down to Sprint and letting them have the update weeks (months?) before the rest of the world - it's obviously causing more then a little confusion. I'm surprised more people haven't been on here saying they've bricked their phone.

well i still cant wait to get the update. Seeing that sprint owners already have it, surely we GSM users will follow shortly. I've been waiting for over 6 months now so a couple of more weeks here or there wont kill me.

However im seriously considering upgrading to the desire...if i dont get 2.1 by end of the year ill definitely upgrade to the desire, or nexus 2 or whatever is out by then!! :P

Enough posts like this may just make HTC delay the update even more, in order to get few more sales on new handsets. :)
