Root Official HTC EVO Design 4G

The Evo Design 4G phone has been around for awhile and isn't one of the models being blocked at customs. It probably won't effect Boost's planned release of their first 4G phone. Sprint can just as easily just move to another brand for their 4G LTE service so I don't think they would suddenly revoke Boost's access to their older WiMaxx system. Samsung no doubt has some to choose from by now.

Glad I don't have Sprint. :P
WiMax sure was short lived wasn't it, LoL.

I'd kept my Triumph line through VM and got the Marquee for Boost too. I'm not quite happy with the Marquee. It's buggy, it gets overly hot and the freezing is bothersome.

I'd gotten a really good Triumph. It's been such a wonderful phone and will continue to be my Mp3 player.

However, I'm going to find a new home for the Marquee.

I agree the Marquee (stock) was quite buggy, and had a tendency to freeze. Though after the OCK, GPU Mod, and CTMod ROM, seems smooth as butter. The heating up can also be an issue. I have had my phone up to 40c, though it was usually due to charging and running a resource heavy application together. There is a setting in the LG hidden menu that can help with that. I'm just saying The Marquee had came a ways since stock with those issues..

Yeah you have to apply things that once wasn't even available but know thanks to the support we are getting the Marquee can be a better phone but no matter how you look at it or how fast you say it, the Marquee is buggy and sluggish out the box . I like My Marquee but it is what it is.

than hang on a second two evos are on thier way out of the box. we will find them bugs too. perfection im yet to see
I agree, probably 90% of new phones (New to your provider) will be buggy. And probably 60% of even a new device that is not new to your provider may be buggy. I think it is all bout money. The quicker they release a phone the quicker they see the $$$, so we the customer suffer in the end. I am just glad there are dev's that are willing to spend their time and effort on our devices to do what the companies wouldn't!

Think of it this way. If they were perfect on getting the bugs out prior to release, we would never find the exploits needed to root the phone. Exploits are in many cases bugs in the boot loader or other parts of Android that slipped past them. ;)

Funny, same here. I JUST bought the Marquee about 3 weeks ago after switching from Virgin Mobile having the Triumph. You could imagine I was not exactly happy that they announced the Design 4G And the 3D for VM right after getting my Marquee. The Marquee is a great phone, I just regret getting it slightly now.

Im happy I never pay over a $100 for my phones just for that reason. I know that as soon as I get one I am going to want a new one..

I got the Optimus V, then the Triumph came out.
I got the Marquee (Flashed to virgin), then the new lineup of android phones came out.
I just got a screaming deal on a Galaxy Epic 4G (going to flash to virgin as soon as it arrives.), lets see what they come out with next. Maybe the Note :P

Just out of curiosity.. How did you get the Marquee for less than $100? Or the Galaxy Epic for that matter? Thanks.

I just got the Evo Design and while the screen looks a tiny bit smaller, it has a higher resolution and over all the phone runs better for me. The 4G works good as well, though I have the unfortunate disposition of being in a house that gets poor 4G signal. Even with low signal it outperforms 3G a ton. :D

I also singlehandly discovered how to root the phone despite there not being an exploit for it yet. (since the latest update from Sprint blocks root and the Boost phone comes with the latest update preinstalled)

HTC was nice enough to allow users to unlock the boot loader. Thus it is possible to install ClockWorkMod without having root. I found a zip installer that installs Superuser/busybox and used that to root my phone. Teehee! :D

U liking it? I've been thinking about flashing a nexus. I really want the galaxy s 3 tho

Yeah. It's better then the Marquee in most ways I can think of. Stock clock speeds are faster and it also comes with ICS. The screen while mostly the same size, it runs at a slightly higher resolution then the Marquee. Only thing the Marquee really beats this one on is that the Marquee is thinner and has a 2 mega pixel front camera while the HTC phone has a 1.3 mega pixel camera. The rear cameras for both phones are the same in specs though.

Thanks to zombu2 who edited the zip file I found, there is now a CWM installer that roots the phone without any hassle. Since it's not using an exploit, it's mostly update proof so long as the bootloader remains unlocked.

Heck I just installed the latest update they just released. It required stock recovery since ota updates won't install via custom recovery roms. So after installing the OTA update. Root didn't work anymore. But since the boot loader was unlocked, I just flashed CWM back, then re-ran the root installer zip and root was back to it's former glory. :D

I'm not sure if the Marquee even has a boot loader but the HTC one can be unlocked via the official HTC website. How nice of them. :D

You should think about trying to get into developing for this phone. We certainly need more dev members over there. :D

If you don't use Boost Mobile as your phone carrier, you will obviously have better phones to choose from. Perhaps a bad ESN Evo will show up on ebay one day and you can get it real cheap to play with. :P

I plan on making the jump later, but I'm gonna wait till the phone has a more active Dev community . The marquee has great devs, and is pretty much the reason I'm sticking with the phone, its also why I stuck with the LG optimus v for a year and a half. Devs... the turn garbage into gold

Hey just one quick question. Is the call volume any better on the design cos the volume on my wife's and my phone is really low. I like my marquee but cant hear when I have background noise.
Thanks

That's weird I use my phone as a music player while I work and have it blasting music pretty loudly on the speaker(I drive a forklift for a living so its pretty loud where i work). Unless you mean the regular sound?

lol Well you may want to hold off on getting the Evo.

Apparently a big flame-ware erupted over there over the CWM port I posted that would work on the Boost version and a whole bunch of misunderstandings and arguments occurred. The place was a ghost town when I posted that thread. How was I supposed to know that apparently the phone already has root? Well anyways, the rest of that forum knows how to get root now. Since if I hadn't posted about it, then only those lucky enough to have stumbled across a few threads at the XDA forums in the far off corners of the internet would have known. So I still think I helped some people out and save them from waiting for something that was already there. :P

Yo bro, don't sweat it man. If you helped someone get root then it's all good. If you stepped on someones toes, oh well, it was unintentional. Apologize and move on man. We all make mistakes bro. Lord knows I've made my fare share. lol :D

Apache if you could can you show us a screenshot of an antutu benchmark? I would like to see how much of an improvement the hardware/ software combo the design has. Thanks...:D

Rodger Dodger. As I recall, stock benchmark starts out at 3100s for me. I have a class 10 SD card though So with sub class 10, it will probably be upper 2000s/lower 3000s. I heard this phone can be overclocked to 1.8ghz once a custom kernel is flashed.

Another benefit is that since HTC officially supports unlocking the phone's bootloader, you will have a 99.9% of being able to root using ClockWorkMod no matter what kind of OTA update Boost/HTC pushes down the pipeline. ;) I'll get a screenshot shortly.

EDIT: Here's my latest benchmark: (note the higher resolution compared to LG Marquee's screenshots. ;) )

shot000001f.png

Hit 3321 that time. Haven't even removed any bloat ware yet. :P

Note that the scores I'm getting is higher then the overclocked Marquee at similar clock speed. Heck it even had the usb trick fix and oc to 1.3ghz and still doesn't quite get the same scores as this phone gets at stock. Just wait until someone gets a overclocked kernel ready. This phone will be blazing fast compared to the Marquee. :D

EDIT: Did another test with usb plugged in. No difference. So usb trick doesn't exist for this phone. (lolz it was actually a tad slower when USB was plugged in)

Thanks.. I actually hit that score on my marquee right now, with bloodawns latest kernel I actually hit 3400 on 1300mhz. He is cranking out another kernel soon that will boost the phone a little more with stability, his releases always get better. So as for now the two are similar considering we have to tweak our marquees. Lol. I'm sure once a custom rom comes out the design will be much higher. P.s. do you have to disable perflock to enable changing the CPU?

I wanted to ask is Face Unlock a feature of the Evo Boost?

Yep. It comes with face unlock feature. I'm using that right now in fact. :P

As for as perflock...Not sure what that is. But there is a kernel already out for the sprint phone that enables the mentioned overclocking to 1.8ghz, but it's for the sprint version of the phone (may work on boost though), but it is outdated since the latest OTA update for the Boost phone is newer then the kernel he had enabled init.d support on and aforementioned overclocking.

Port that facelock :-P

Interesting app but haven't seen 1 that works very well yet. I tried 1 from G Play called Facerecog and it works but it needs bright light. I'm sitting here in my office which is lit up pretty well and couldn't get it to lock on to my eyes w/o getting directly under the ceiling fan light. Once i went in to a brightly lit room it worked OK though.
