...with the attendant problems. Just got ICS on my Razr Maxx this morning. Some things I'm liking, others I'm not. Start with the nots. I don't like the loss of a charge-only connection when connected to a PC via USB. That appears to take the SD card off line with respect to the phone, meaning anything that relies on the SD card (like ASTRO) is toast while you're connected. I sure hope my ringtones come back after I unhook the phone. But losing my ringtones -- heck, losing access to the SD card -- while hooked up to a PC is a total fail. I don't like the fact that ICS didn't come with a reset option. Like Gingerbread on RM, I can shut off the phone, but I have to power off/power on to reset the phone. My DIncs, both original and 2, had a reset option under the power switch. What do I like? The RM under GB appeared to lose the ability to put a contact into a group, neither did it recognize the groups in my Google contacts; ICS recognizes both: win. And aside from losing access to the SD card while hooked up to the computer, I do like the fact that the computer does recognize the phone when attached. I gave up a Galaxy Nexus for the RM because the computer would not recognize the GN when attached, making file transfer at best horrendous (having to take out the card whenever I needed to xfer), and natively impossible. Win for the RM under ICS.
 
km2002: settings, storage, menu, usb computer connection.

Uncheck "Mass Storage". Should not present the storage to the computer. Good to know if you want to transfer files if you disable it.
 
That's what I was saying when I mentioned the loss of a charge-only connection. Like a lot of other users on other fora, I've noticed that you do not get the option to just clear the check at mass storage: I tried about seven times; it won't clear. It makes me select either the media option or the camera option. There's no way to turn that off altogether. Another major fail.
 
Actually it's not a fail. You have to select one there. Use MTP, which allows access on the computer AND the phone. You'll probably have to hunt down a MTP driver (this was a PITA on the galaxy nexus btw!) if you want to access from your computer.

When you are connected, there's an option in the notification bar that gets you to the screen where you can select the usb mode.

Also, I'm on USB right now and my battery is "charging", even says charging on the lock screen.
 
I disagree that it's not a fail; IMNSHO, it's a definite fail. But I'll look for a driver and try the MTP option next time I'm hooked up to the PC. I have noticed the items in the notification bar; thank you: no different from GB.
 
You don't need the mtp driver for what you are doing, in fact that meets your needs! Or you can just flip back to the regular mode though the task bar if you ever want to transfer files to your storage!

I'll agree though, it's a shame they took out the "charge only" setting in ICS. Many people used that option!
 
I'll just add that I **think** it asked for drivers and failed on Windows 7 the first time for MTP mode.

However I just flipped back into MTP mode for the second time and I can browse internal and the SD card storage from the PC.

I just used a file browser and I can browse my SD card on the phone in this mode. It is also still charging, yay.

I still say it's good to have the Mass Storage option, that was easy to access the SD card in almost all cases.... this was not possible when I had my VZW Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
 
I haven't been able to play any media files (be they video or music files) after the new update that I had installed a few hours ago. All the files are in their respective libraries and continue to play when mounted in other devices on the same SD Card, but even the internal files (such as those downloaded from the Browser application) do not play. I've tried numerous audio programs but none of them seem to function. Winamp freezes when attempting to hit the menu or when opening a specific file with Winamp. Play Music seems to play and will occasionally show a rudimentary equalizer moving with the music but does not produce sound through any audio port (external speaker or the audio jack) while the volume is, obviously, turned up.

Any ideas? If not, I'm heading back to Gingerbread, unfortunately. The battery life has been significantly reduced since the update, I've found, even when most of the menu browsing seems to have been streamlined.
 
Does anyone know how to change the favorites under contacts back to the old way it looked without the huge icons? I used favorites a lot and now these huge icons make it much less navigable than it used to be when it was a scrolling list

You can use the favorites widget.

I'm still getting less than 24 hours on my Maxx and I'm not a heavy user. Thinking about a factory reset, but if that doesn't work how can I go back to GB?

I also did a clean install of ICS (factory reset) and have also seen reduced battery life. I used to go to bed after about about 14-16 hours off the charger consistently at 60 percent left and now it's consistently at 30 percent left with similar usage and settings. Something definitely is altering the battery's capabilities. It's still much better than my iPhone 4S on battery, but nowhere near what it used to be.
 
Hi All! -- I'm running a Verizon Droid RAZR MAXX still with Gingerbread 2.3.6

I'd been looking forward to updating to Ice Cream Sandwich -- I usually opt to move up when possible as I've too often been left behind and not been able to partake of neat new features.

But, it's beginning to sound like I might be happier NOT doing a system update. I use the HanDBase app extensively and I see mention on their forums that in ICS it is no longer possible to mount the internal SD card and access it as a drive on my PC laptop (Win7), HanDBase depends on this USB link for its sync. Apparently in ICS the recommended workaround sync involves emailing the HanDBase database files back and forth between phone and computer. :mad: :rolleyes:

Are there any BIG reasons why I NEED Ice Cream Sandwich on my phone? And, if I decide to forgo the upgrade when first offered (assuming this will happen pretty soon), will I be allowed to continue with Gingerbread 2.3.6 untilk I get a new phone 1.5 years from now?
 
I had been using LancherPro so much when I was on GB, I forgot some functions in stock android. Is there a way set which screen is my home screen, since I don't like the middle screen being my home screen? :dong:

Yea....I can access my internal phone storage as a drive when I connect it to my PC too.

On mine...it shows up as MotoCast (M,) MOT (N) and MOT (O) when connected as Mass Storage. The O drive is my internal storage.

This works. You can connect the phone to the PC and access the SD card and internal storage on the phone and PC at the same time. You have to mount it as Media device (MTP) I had a G Nex too....so I dont know if I already had drivers from then. Which never played right with my PC...had to unlock the bootloader on my Win 7 PC. That might been a internet security software issue as to why it didnt work on my XP machine.

And I agree....it was a pain on the G Nex...lol. Glad I'm not alone.
 
I was starting to think they forgot about me also (no update). I just went into Setting, About Phone, System Updates. There it was. Waiting for me to download. Still downloading.

Try doing that before spending time waiting for a Verizon person to talk to you.

I'll be darned, I've been waiting for 10 days, wonder how long it's been sitting there. With my old phone (DINC), it told you about software updates automatically, will Razr Maxx not do this? I wonder how many users would never think to check...
