Official Release Date Rumor Thread

They do have a limit, and they will remind you of that each and every time you return a phone.

As for the lack of excitement, my concerns come with reading *some* posts that seem to indicate that the GPS still isn't up to snuff in the SGSII. Knowing that Samsung seems to have no problems issuing with known issues (see SGSI -> Captivate) makes me hesitant.

That being said...the only other option even remotely appealing to me at this point is the Atrix, now that the bootloader is finally unlocked.

I almost broke and went to the Atrix....until I went and looked at it. I just can't believe how badly they skimped on the screen on this phone. It really does look as terrible as everybody says. The colors are bland and washed out looking. Also I found Motoblur to be much less intuitive to navigate than Touchwiz on the Infuse.(Which of course you can change, but you can't change the screen tech) I am not trying to talk you out of it. Just make sure you go to a store and look at the screen first.

They had bad GPS issues not only in US, but also in oversea as well. Seemed like hardware issue in OG Galaxy S.
But since then, their new phones this year don't seem to have any major GPS issues. Sure, there were some sporadic signal issues with some small number of users, but which phone doesn't suffer that? I don't think we have much to worry on GPS in GS2.

I actually owned an Atrix when it first came out, but returned it in my 30 days. The screen grew on me, but I had major issue with the data speeds (which at that point were capped pretty low) and the bootloader (I'm a total CM7 fangirl at this point, and even at that point in March I wanted to be able to back up and/or replace my ROMs at will). The specs definitely aren't as good as the SGSII though.

Re: The GPS...MobileTechVideos had this posted on his Facebook page...

In case anyone was wondering. With stock firmware, the GPS on the SGS II still isn't where it "SHOULD" be. It's better than the SGS I but still slower than it needs to be! Not a deal breaker as it locks "ok" but could be better.

I've also seen posts in these forums suggesting the GPS wasn't as solid as it could be.

Because of that, I almost certainly won't be an early adopter to this phone, whenever it does hit. I'll probably let you good people beta test, see if the GPS kinks have worked out, and then decide from there. Hopefully someone will buy the tablet I'm selling on eBay so I'll have the budget for a new phone!

For me at least the Atrixs screen is just not there by todays standards. I made the mistake of looking at the Infuse screen just before looking at the Atrix. Needless to say the Infuse screen(which is also on the GS2) is absolutely stunning and the Atrix pales in comparison. If I had just looked at the Atrix maybe I would have seen it differently, but unfortunately that was not the case lol. I also compared it with the iPhone 4s screen and the colors paled in comparison to that as well.

wait...so i can return my infuse on day 28ish and grab a whatever and get 30 more days!!!!????

thays the best news i have heard all day!!!!

I have registered here only to give you the big news:
Samsung Galaxy S2 August Release Date Confirmed by Company President | Headline News
Of course, until I created my account, I've seen it posted already. I see you are talking about the GPS. Yes, Samsung sucks when it comes to GPS. Recently, we made a trip to FL. I used to own a Nokia E71 and Nokia Maps took us to the destination without any single issue. Because I sunk my Nokia in the ocean, on the way home we used my friend's Samsung... something, from T-Mobile. We found ourselves on roads where the last car passed two days ago, in the middle of nowhere, with zero bars on AT&T or T-Mobile, trying to figure out where to go next, because the GPS was looking for satellites. So, we used the map to find the best routes, witch gave us a couple of hours delay. I know I was reading a while ago about the GPS issue on Samsung and I know there was some kind of patch. Hopefully, the Korean engineers figured it out what they have to change, in order to make it right and they applied the patch already. If not... God help us!

Well, to each his/her own. But for me GPS is secondary function of phone, not my primary navigating device on the road as I have Garmin device for that. And from what I see, read, GPS is improved from original galaxy S if still not perfect. So it's not deal breaker for me if GS2 is excellent in other areas.

Anyone swayed by the news that the Nexus S is finally coming to AT&T? It's NOT the 4G model (although how many people live in areas where AT&T has any kind of 4G service anyway? My parents still don't have 3G on AT&T yet!). $99 on pre-order today from Best Buy. I'm tempted, but I really had my heart set on a dual core phone, yet if my Captivate dies completely soon and we don't get some indication on when the Attain is coming I might defect.

Exactly. I've been a Garmin customer since 2007. You don't buy a smartphone and expect it to be a bad ass computer. Yes, it does a lot of things a computer does, but a computer it is not. Same for GPS.

No front facing camera or expandable memory, either.

It's tempting, because with the Google Music beta and things like Dropbox (or Mozy, or any other cloud service), you really don't need external storage. The price point is a draw, as is the "pure" Google experience.

And again, re: GPS ... I'm on the other side of the card. I don't want to have several devices in my house/car/whatever that all do the same thing. I got rid of my GPS unit, and since my phone has that as an advertised feature, I expect it to work as advertised. It's the same reason I'm getting rid of my tablet (isn't getting used, even for business purposes). Really though, to each their own.

Yeah, I've retained my dedicated Garmin for car nav, but I like having my phone for the occasional assist when I'm out hiking. Really annoying when it won't lock. And, as someone else mentioned, there's the fact that it's advertised as having a GPS - therefore I expect it to work!

I agree that the GPS should work. Although from what I have read there are relatively few complaints about the GS2 GPS.(Not saying they are not there, but I haven't seen them)

Any ideas how much this is gonna cost when it comes out? I'm gonna have to early upgrade to get it... so any ideas what I'm looking at spending on this?

none yet but i would expect $200-250

i continue to grill my resources looking for more info.

That $200-$250 would be the contract price. I want to say the "early upgrade" is an additional $150, but if you call AT&T and convince them that you need the upgrade before your eligible, you can avoid that.

This thread of mine is from several months ago, but the technique is still the same. Good luck!

Well I'm about 9 months into a 2 year contract on a dumbphone and want to get a smartphone.. So what would I be doing exactly? And there was a thread here that said its 200 on the contract price but i talked to someone i know who works for at&t and he said its 100 on top of the contract price so idk how much extra i pay for it

True, if you got the unlimited data plan.

Exactly, otherwise why would you care that is has a 8 MP camera or if it has camera at all, you have a digital camera, don't you? Why would you care if it can store phone numbers, you have your organizer, right?

I agree that GPS and camera should work as advertised on smart-phone. but I'm also on the camp that they are secondary functions of phone. Major functions would be calling, texting, emails, SNS, web browsing, weather apps, etc.

For camera, though it has advanced enough to use it for occasional close up shots and landscapes, it doesn't really replace my digital cameras when I want to be serious about capturing memories, scenes. First of all, it lacks optical zoom and has only digital zoom that hurts image quality. Sensor and lens aperture sizes are too small to use it for dim indoors.

Regarding GPS, it's probably closer to stand alone device than its camera. But still GPS device like Garmin, Magellan is faster, more accurate and provides more features. Stand alone GPS device has specially designed GPS reception antenna/radio that's better than the ones in cramped smart-phone relying assistance from wireless cell tower. I don't know. Maybe someday it will catch up enough to make stand alone GPS devices disappear, but it's not there yet. Battery drain is another issue for GPS in phone. Even when plugged to car charger, it seems to lose power rather than re-charging.

Aside from GPS, I think Attain on AT&T will be coming first to US among three US variants of SGSII. And it will probably be the closest to international version spec wise as wireless radios are compatible. There are some folks on Function forum doubting that it will have the same Exynos processor and speculating Tegra2 in it, but that remains to be seen and there is no info yet to confirm it either way. If it turns out that way, I will probably switch to AT&T to get Attain.

don't need unlimited data - can listen to the music in "offline" mode where it's not streaming at all.

I rarely use my digital camera, though I have a relatively nice one. When my cat is being cute, or I'm otherwise trying to capture something quick, it's the cell phone, because that's what is in hand. So I'm not sure where you're trying to go with your argument. I expect advertised features to work as advertised on my devices - I don't feel that's even remotely close to unreasonable.

And Attain???????? ... you essentially have two options. You call them up and tell them you'd like to go to a smartphone, but you're in the middle of the contract, ask what they can do to make that a more viable option for you. Alternatively, you can go straight for the throat, and indicate to them you're looking to go to (insert carrier of choice here) because you can get (insert smartphone of choice here) for whatever price as a brand new customer. Essentially, you're trying to leverage your business to get the best rate possible. If you're a good customer (pay on time, etc) or (and perhaps especially) a "premier" customer, they'll work with you, particularly if you're polite (even through your persistence).

Let's put to rest arguments on GPS/camera secondary function on phone. We heard from both sides enough and to each his/her own. I am more interested in when Attain will hit here and what features it will have.

Exactly. Some people value certain features more than others, which is fine. There is a reason why everybody does not have the same phone. Because everybody wants something different out of it be it price range, camera, GPS, screen, size, etc. So you guys are arguing over a point that there is no universal answer to.
