Official Release Date Rumor Thread

Despite the excitement of today, US consumers aren't really that into Samsung phones. Even for the SGS1, competing HTC and Motorola devices sold more.

But difference now is that there are no other HTC, Moto phones on AT&T, T-mobile, Sprint that can go head to head with SGSII. SGSII is still beating all others performance wise until Nexus Prime hits.

Official Samsung Galaxy S II U.S. Launch Coverage

This site lists the AT&T release as Sept 18th...apparantly this was updated directly from someone at the conference. Surely the info has to be out there since they said representatives from all the carriers were at this conference.

Pricing on the above link still says TBA, but it was said earlier on here it would be released at $199 with contract. Hopefully that is the case.

I think the paranoia began with Evo. They sold out for weeks at a time. There was a serious shortage. No problems whatsoever with Epic (I think there were still Evo shortages when Epic dropped).
Do you mean the ORIGINAL EVO? Yea, there were shortages galore there but it was mainly due to bad hardware & QC problems. It took me 3 tries to get a fully functioning one that after 28 days I returned and got out of Sprint as did many people. Even with that, there weren't people queued up for hours in line waiting to get the first ones as it was pretty much announced they wouldn't have "ready stock" to sell and they had to be ordered and picked up. At least here in NJ. Also that was before the huge influx of 100 different models of Android phones. Most "normal" folks don't care if their phone has 1 core or 6 cores, or 3.7 inches or 4.52 inches, just us geeks.

The iPhone is different, it's the "peoples phone" so like Apple or hate Apple they draw huge crowds. Ask ANYONE you know (or even don't know) if they have heard of the iPhone and ask those same people if they have heard of a Samsung Galaxy 2 or 1. :)

"samsunggalaxys2review.org" :D ..... sounds like a site who copies their (probably incorrect) info from other sites as do 90% of the others to get advertising hits.

The only "official" date will come from an AT&T press release. We can speculate and hope all day. EVENTUALLY one of them will have to be right.

I'm gonna be mad if this 'in the upcoming weeks' turns out like the Thrill..

I don't think that should be the case because the Thrill delay was to put gingerbread on it. Having said that, can any of us really be surprised if it does, the way this thing's been playing out thus far?

Yes, the original Evo. When Epic was coming out, a lot of people were preordering or planning to go to the stores the morning of the release, because of the whole Evo debacle.

Whatever the actual release date turns out to be (hopeully the 18th), should we expect to find them on that day only in AT&T company stores and the AT&T website, or should we expect to see them the same day in authorized AT&T retailers (Best Buy, etc.) as well?

Do you really think that people are going to have to line up early for this phone (or any phone other than an iPhone)? Plus, with the iPhone due very soon this store launch is going to a little less than overwhelming.

Maybe not "line up" but a lot of these hot phones can sell out fast, though it depends.

I remember trying to get a Droid-X about the time I got my Captivate and it was basically sold out for weeks, same thing with the Evo.

I remember ATT started selling Captivates a couple days early, and I felt lucky I was able to get one, by being an avid internet reader and happening to know they were selling early. Otherwise it quite likely may have been sold out too.

Is September 18th confirmed anywhere?

The above site estimates it as a September 11th release date.

So I'll be waiting for my ATT store to open on the release day and being near the front of any line, that's a no brainer for me. Here's my concern.... the manager that told me about the 18th also told me that I'd be grandfathered into the Unlimited data plan because I've had it since 2008. BUT, a friend of mine that recently upgraded got knocked out of his Unlimited data plan. He told me that the rep said he'd be grandfathered in, but apparently he wasn't... Now, I don't know if he changed his data plan (because the manager stated that if I made any changes to my plan that the Unlimited data would go bye-bye), but I do NOT want to lose my Unlimited data... cuz I plan on surfing, streaming, uploading, app-ing, and texting the CRAP outta this beast of a phone! :-D I'm getting this phone...... even if the Nexus Prime is around the corner.... I'm in desperate need of a new phone, it's been tough enough to wait this long on the SGS2

Fair enough. Didn't know if they were reputable or not. Guess I'm still anxious to get it as soon as possible.

I'm also grandfathered in AT&T's unlimited plan. When I purchased the Infuse from BestBuy a few months ago...the guy said that AT&T is taking the top 1-5% of data users (I forget the exact number) and knocking them off the unlimited plan. As for changing the plan canceling your grandfather status....I was told I had to change my text package because it was no longer offered. I was told this change would not effect my unlimited data status...and as far as I could tell, it didn't.

My understanding of the unlimited data plans is this: any time you make any sort of phone change, no matter if you purchase the phone in an AT&T corporate store or elsewhere, you HAVE to call in afterwords to have them restore your data plan. They will restore that plan (and if you now have a 4G phone where you didn't previously, you'll have the 4G unlimited) because they can see that you previously had it. But the people at the stores (even the corporate ones) seem to fail miserably at properly switching data/text plans. Totally worth it to call as soon as you have the phone in your hands, and make sure everything got set up right.

As for what AT&T has said about throttling some users, they'd indicated that they would throttle the top 2% (I believe), and then only after multiple warnings. So if you have 1 month where you use a slew of data, you'll get a warning...but if you do it consistently, you'll find yourself getting throttled after you use I believe it's 5gb. And the throttling is only for that particular billing cycle, as well. The next month you'd reset back to normal.

The Thrill release date of Sept 4th was confirmed by ATT yesterday

There have been several sources that were "at the event" that had stated Sept 18th so there may be some truth to that

but

assuming logistics can be arranged...I wouldn't put it past ATT to move the release date to a sooner date to beat sprint to the release, but that only leaves this weekend and next

then there is that whole OCT 2nd rumor the samsung guy gave me  lets hope not haha

So basically we're still where we were a while ago:

1) We know it is going to be released (we always knew that, just not officially).

2) We don't know when (officially) - except for Sprint.

Same old same old. :)

Yup. Same old thing, still. I would have picked up an Infuse in May if I'd have known it would be nearly October

Wouldn't you know it, I'm out catching birds from sunrise through midafternoon on the the 18th. No staking out the AT&T store for me :(

Always assuming THIS rumor is true (although I wouldn't pout if it came out earlier than the rumor claims).

I don't know why anyone is thinking this will be released on the 11th now, we know Sprint's version will be released first and that is the 16th.

I don't think the 18th is going to be real either. They would have said a date yesterday.

I think Mr. Ed said 10/2 a while back, that seems like a reasonable date.

A release in Oct is silly.

The AT&T version had the least amount of changes from the international version realeased in May...yet its projected to take an additional 5 months to hit the USA, AND release after Sprint?!?

For comparison purposes, This phone was officiall anounced by Samsung in Feb 2011 and then released in May 2011.

Considering the Q4 Android devices set to release Oct-Dec,high probability ICS rolling out in Oct on the Nexus Prime, AND iPhone 5 rolling out in Oct....why would they push to Oct?

This phone needs to be out ASAP to sieze the thunder away from the new hottness in Q4. Waiting till Q4 to release would just be sharing the thunder instead of stealing it.

What a steaming pile of crap. I am sick of all of this rumor BS. Give me one good reason why they couldn't give us a date yesterday. I am crossing my fingers for the HTC Holiday to release so I don't haft to give them my money. I am not stubborn enough to skip out on a good phone, but I am stubborn enough to switch to a different one.
