***Official Samsung Fascinate 2.2 Speculation Thread***

You should flash Gingerbread on your wife's DX and really see some sh!t. Froyo will feel like a turtle again....well maybe you shouldn't. :D

No she ran her mouth off the whole time I was on 2.1. There is no way im putting her on 2.3.

I read the only merformance upgrade for 2.3 was the java engine and it wasnt that big of an improvement. Maybe im wrong.

I'll just say this. If you want to shut her up, don't upgrade her to 2.3. There is a huge improvement to Gingerbread from Froyo.

I have to disagree. 2.2 official is coming, at least in my opinion. Leaks continue to pop up on different test ROMs and kernels. Why do you expect the nation's largest (until the merger completes, anyways) carrier to be the ONLY one not to update their Galaxy S variant? Considering how long it took Sprint and AT&T to update theirs, if Verizon is only a month or two late, that will be typical Verizon.

With a wider user base and a more rigorous testing methodology they are going to find more bugs and complaints about the Fascinate and send more feedback to Samsung than other carriers.

You saying for SURE that the Fascinate is not getting official 2.2 is just as asinine as those who give set speculated dates for its release. I've never estimated a release date or claimed to believe firmly in a rumor without the disclaimer that it's only my best guess, and nothing more. In fact, last year, I recall saying I just hope I get 2.2 before (or for) my birthday. Verizon/Samsung missed that mark, but if it comes out in April, it won't be by much.

2.2 will come officially, since the dock requires 2.2 for it to even work as advertised.

So, I agree, it will come. Eventually.

So, I got my samsung fascinate in december, and at that time I was told 2.2 was directly around the corner... obviously not true. Since the first week of January, I have been searching the internet and forums for information on our getting 2.2, mostly for flash. I have read a lot of different opinions, and some facts, but there is ONE that I think is very interesting. If this is incorrect or a repeat within this thread then I apologize... I also don't remember where I read it but I saw it multiple times so if anyone wants to go find and quote, be my guest.

every samsung galaxy s series phone has 2.2 functionality EXCEPT the TWO that come preloaded with BING.

whether or not this is completely accurate, or just a coincidence, that could explain why.....
(A) the tech team has had trouble coding the new platform functions
(B) the contractual problems between bing (microsoft), android 2.2 (google), and Samsung, could result in no 2.2 on bing phones
(C) few descriptions of the technical issues are available because it's not actually a physical problem with the samsung phone or the team working the update.

after reading the first few and last few pages of this thread, I thought this would be an interesting tangent.. Discuss!

I was exactly like you a week ago. But I got fed up and googled one click root. It was so easy I'm kind of mad I didnt try it earlier. Every thing you do to your phone(root, etc) comees with detailed instruction as well as detailed warnings for every step that could do damage if done wrong. Also there is almost nothing that can't be fixed, including a brick. If you could only play with my phone right now you would never say you were going to get an iphone again. Pure non touchwiz android is so nice! Also my gps works and my phone is so fast in everything it does I am constantly suprised with it. It makes my wife's droid x feel like a blackberry. I know you are nervous but with all the great devs working with our phone ther is really no reason to be afraid. Im just saying, right now you arent happy with your phone because it is not quite as good as an iphone, but in one weekend you could turn it into an iphone crushing powerhouse with much less effort than you think.

sorry that i ask you, what are you running right now? i saw a video of Draky,s ROM 7.5 gingerbread (sick). really like that ROM. i am actually waiting for a friend of mine to be off so he can stay in the phone with me to do it step by step. i wish i never gave my wife my incredible.lol

For whatever it's worth, I had sent two e-mail since November one last month. I don't know what it all means but I was told the delay in 2.2 could be an issue of compatibility or firmware revisions needed before they make the decision. I'm not technical so I have no clue what that even means.

I think we are looking too much into this. Will the release come, i think so, is it anything technical... probably not, probably more politics than anything. Who is the driver behind the delays... i think it is verizon, samsung knows how to put 2.2 on a phone, they probably just haven't been able to make verizon happy yet.

The reason you get nothing from any of the companies about what is going on, is that, like most companies doing any kind of SW development, they all have NDA's in place to prevent anyone from discussing technical, or program related matters to anyone outside of the immediate parties responsible.

I'm sure those things factored into it, but look here to see leaks of a Fascinate specific 2.2:

{List}[4.2.11] *VZW* CDMA i500 Roms and Kernels - xda-developers

Scroll down and you'll see different versions of full 2.2 leaks which include TouchWiz, Bing, NFS & Tetris trials, CityID, and all the other Verizon/Samsung crap.

I have personally tested a couple of those, and they work for me just as well (actually a little better & faster) as the official 2.1 that shipped with the phone, with or without the two OTA updates Verizon released for 2.1 only. Both times Bing was the first thing I tried to get rid of, although if anything, it's HARDER to fully get rid of Bing in the 2.2 leaks than in 2.1, despite Verizon saying Google search was going to be optional. I finally ended up going with SuperClean and haven't looked back.

Amen. This goes back to the one thing that the Fascinate still has in spades: good hardware. The screen is outstanding. I'm re-watching a lot of my old TV series on my phone - just copy a couple of MKVs right to the SD card. I know of no better 4" portable video player. Viewing angles and contrast and colors are exceptional. I get fine battery life - never need the midday charge. And reception has always been good. Despite Samsung/Verizon's failings on the software and support side, I am impressed daily by how fast and capable this device is. And you can get it for $50 at Best Buy or Walmart with your 2 year upgrade or a new line. There's no way I would get a Thunderbolt over a Fascinate right now. It's too much of a sidegrade for someone like me that is willing to root and customize. The TB is a great device, and HTC finally has a phone camera to match the Galaxy S camera hardware. I've tested and compared. HTC has firmly caught up here. Regardless, if you're not afraid of rooting, the Samsung Fascinate still has several advantages over the Thunderbolt. You'll have to pick the features that are most important to you.

My point is, thanks to the dev community, the Fascinate can still pretty quickly be the device you need and want it to be. I've played with stock Thunderbolts, and pre-customizing and de-bloating, patching blockbuster, and installing the 4G toggle, even the Thunderbolt can feel laggy and get pathetic battery life. There are things you have to do to every phone, including the iPhone, to get everything you want out of it. PERIOD. It's easier on some devices than others, but if you take a little time to do it to the Fascinate, it's a dang impressive and responsive device - a device that will make the owner very pleased.

Warning - NON OTA 2.2 TOPIC: I recommend adrynaline's latest superclean found here:

[ROM][3.23.2011] Superclean 2.9.2 EA15/EB01/EB16/EC10 Based - xda-developers

I started out with the EB01 kernel, and now I'm on EB16 voodoo, and this phone is amazing. It's fast, stable, gets good reception, good enough battery life, doesn't have any bing or verizon trialware garbage, and for some reason my GPS and tethering work better than they ever have, ever. I can't explain how ridiculously fast my GPS locks now. It's almost scary...

I'm running Superclean 2.9 voodoo. I downloaded GPS Aids from the market and my GPS lock right away as well. I love the stock android.

I threw ADW.Launcher on top of it, too, for a bit more customization - resizable/scrollable widgets, more rows or columns for icons/widgets, etc. I really like the setup I have now.

Just have to pipe in again to say... I love my unrooted 2.1 phone. I'm trying to avoid coming here because then I get those crazy "rooting" ideas then get stressed then decide not to. Anyway, I do love my phone, I'm coming from a Blackberry Bold though. Despite how much I love my phone, I do still think, almost daily, about just going iPhone mainly because I love the idea of such an easy docking system that would work w/ all of my ipod speaker docks...and the fact that I can actually hook it up to my mac (though I use isyncr wifi which is something I can't do w/ an iPhone... no wireless syncing unless I jailbreak which I never would)

Random thing I love so much I have to share though. I have poweramp for my music player and was shocked the other day when I clicked on the empty album art section and it actually FOUND ALBUM ART and let me replace the empty spot w/ album art the app found online. I have to say that is BEYOND FREAKING AWESOME!!! My ipod doesn't do that :)

Anyway, carry on, I'll keep checking and wishing someone in the central ohio area would provide a service where I could pay 50 bucks just to root this stupid thing so I wouldn't have to deal w/ it.

:o:o:o sorry, just one question change the topic to rooting.... i apologize guy's

Trust me. We understand. A lot of people are tired of waiting for 2.2, and rooting is still the only way to get it. I must echo this apology myself, and I merely posted what I did in the hopes that it helps some people out.

I'm in Columbus. I rooted my Fascinate (hesitantly). So far, no problems... Though I have not upgradeded, I've just rooted.

I want to (haven't yet) get around to making a backup before I try 2.2 or 2.3, though I keep thinking: @%^!&$ I've waited so long already, surely they must be releasing OTA "soon"?!?!

EDIT: Haha, tried to Chat w/Samsung to tell them how sick I am of waiting month after month for a now old OS for my phone and got this:

We value your business.

Unfortunately none of our Agents are available at this time due to high traffic levels.

Please feel free to use our self-serve options or try our chat services again later. If your problem requires immediate attention, you may call 1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864).

Probably tired of hearing us complain???

I love my ADWex, one thing I did to make it that much better was followed this posts instructions on how to removed touchwiz from underneath adw. The only difference is tounchwiz is named launcher2.apk in SC 2.9

TouchWiz is still under there somewhere on Superclean?? Hmmm.... will have to look into this.

The Launcher, its wallpapers, it's all there. I've learned not to mess with it in root explorer. If adrynalyne put it in there, there's probably a good reason for it to be there :P No problems with my phone on 2.9
