Orange 2.2 update

I really cant see orange delivering the update at the weekend. I am tempted to do the unlocking and rom update myself, but am a little annoyed I will loose all my data, including installed apps.

I'll give Orange a few more weeks.

3 weeks ago, Orange said 2.2 should take about 4 weeks to test, so it's not due this weekend. Orange never said this weekend.

Vodafone are getting 2.2 starting on Monday...

Vodafone HTC Desire Android 2.2 update landing 23 August | News | TechRadar UK

Here's hoping that a similar announcement from Orange arrives soon!

Hello chaps (and chapesses), can I assume that if and when the 2.2 upgrade happens we simply go to software update and follow it from there? And another quick question, as said in other posts I'm just not techy enough yet, when/if I do upgrade can I just do it? As in with me running LPP do I just tap on yes please upgrade me or do I have to do this in a certain way?

Sorry for being a dumbass :o

I'm on Orange and I de-branded to get the 2.2 Froyo update when it came out.

The thing I wanted the most from the update was bluetooth voice dialing. As this still didn't come with the HTC Froyo update I rooted and installed a custom ROM.

Froyo is nice to have, but don't worry if you're waiting that bit longer because it really doesn't make that much difference in my opinion.

Guys, if you're all so desperate to get the FroYo update, just debrand and unlock. Debranding was a very straightforward process as was unlocking, took me about 45mins to do including the 2.2 update. Plus it means that all future updates will be quicker too!

Just a thought...

think I might do this if the Orange release is provided with more of their crappy (i dont want ware). Scratch that i dont need ware is more like it.

I tend to agree, and as I've said in previous posts I'll be giving Orange til this time next week and then looking at debranding, but the flipside is: why should we have to? Why should we have to waste our time and risk killing our phones purely because SPs want to fiddle with an OS - and an apparently open source OS at that?

We need to get someone on the inside, someone that works at Orange, someone that makes decisions regarding pointless crap apps that no one uses.

It wouldn't be so bad if they were completely pointless and orange.

To be fair the guy that works for Orange has already posted multiple times they where on track and ready for release within 4 weeks. I highly doubt they have shaved a week off this time.

For those of you who haven't rooted I hope the 2.2 update is available when they said it is (end of the week - start of next now isn't it) and they have ditched the cr-apps.

all - for info I just downloaded the 2.2 update from orange (90Meg). i bought the phone from Carphone warehouse (uk) with an orange contract - so i am presuming i am talking about an orange branded phone. there doesnt seem to be any cr*p on there after the update. At first attempt the update failed - the phone reported that i didnt have enough free onboard RAM (i had 16MB free and it said i needed 25MB) - so i deleted some stuff and upgrade worked. some enhanced icons - video player (which may have been there before) - doesnt seem to be a vast difference (tho it did force me to go through the keyboard tutorial again!) - I havent found any Orange apps on there. The wi-fi hotspot function is there, which sounds potentially brilliant. All seems fine to me - happy to check anything out specifically if someone has a query - but so far - (30 mins in) i am happy with it. hope this helps. oh - just found some voice activation stuff - off to play :-)

Orange could earn some serious credibility if they released their branded 2.2 without any crapware, as per Vodafone, but I very much doubt they will do it.

Surely they must know about discussions like this? Smartphone users have lots of choice when it comes to contacts for their handsets, and the bundled software just forces people to go elsewhere.

Carphone Warehouse sell unbranded phones (as HTC intended!), so you won't have had an Orange ROM, either 2.1 or 2.2.

really ? - b*gger - sorry all - didnt realise. I heard orange had said (around beginning of aug) 2.2 would be available in about 4 weeks. guess i put 2 and 2 together and got 5. perhaps the HTC calc is faulty ;-)

Hi All,

I'm a newbie here, but have been waiting like everyone else for 2.2 for Desire. I have an Orange contract and the good news is I got the update notification last night. So I'm now a fully paid up member of the Froyo fraternity.

Happy days

Did you get the phone from Orange direct or Carphone Warehouse?

I'm pretty sure all carriers mod the ROM in some shape or form, I don't think it's just Orange. I say this 'cause my mate has a Desire on Voda and he says he can't access GTalk or the tethering options. I mean, it's a small mod but a mod none-the-less on their part.

Could be wrong though, he might just be being a bit thick. Anyway, Froyo rocks man, it feel so much slicker already and although it doesn't really add an awful lot of features it's all in the details! I suggest anyone on Orange just debrands and unlocks anyway, I don't regret it at all! This is what happened to me though:

Backed up, created goldcard, downloaded stock ROM.
Flashed phone using goldcard and stock ROM.
Reboot....
SUCCESS! No issues so far... phone all works fine.
Check for updates, small update available, NOT 2.2 (OK, guess i must have to do this first)
Download, install, reboot...
SUCCESS.....oh no, wait. Not quite....
NETWORK LOCKED!!! No access to phone, 'Contact customer support'
S**t.... looks like that little update within 2.1 has messed it up.
Forced to unlock, luckily this is an easy process (although it cost me

Fair point I got it from Mobiles.co.uk which is owned by Carphone Warehouse, maybe that explains it.

Have to say, for someone who is not massively into modding my phone the upgrade messed around with some stuff. Like the clock just disappeared as did the contacts. Now it's easy enough to fix, once I worked out that the phone thought that is was still there and removed the container where it once was. However noone has mentioned this.

Speed has improved though and I'm lookng forward to when developers have upgraded their apps so that they can go onto the SD card. Even Google is not there yet, which is a surprise.

Still loving the phone tho.

Over on Eurodroid there's a blog article that suggests the Orange OTA update could be released this Friday. Now, I remain sceptical, although that does kinda fit in with the original time frame given by Orange. Watch this space...

Cool. Thanks for updating us on this. I am still waiting for Orange to issue the 2.2 OTA, hopefully over the next couple of weeks.
