Orange UK 2.1 update news

Hi all,

The HTC HERO Orange Eclair update comes in 2 parts

==Part 1==

I ran through the update process connected via 3G+, the download took around 1 minute and the install about 5 minutes. I did not lose any of the data on the device.

Also you can make the phone manually check for updates by:
Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> System software update -> Check now

That should keep you all busy constantly trying that awaiting part 2 :P

==PART 2==

I've gone for the via wifi method of update simply because the ROM is around 80Mb in size to download.

The process was:

Download ROM (cell/wifi) - 3 minutes via wifi
Checks Validity of Package - 1 minute
Install (now/later) - 10 seconds
Reboots!
Shows package installer image with install progress bar - 7 minutes (the 1st 3/4 was quick, the last 1/4 took over half of the time)
Package installer image without progress bar - 1 minute
Reboots!
Reboots! (twice for some reason)
Hero splash screen - 1 minute
Reboots! (third time at this point I was scared)
New HTC white and green splash screen - 30 seconds
Orange logo splash with green progress bar - 4 minutes
Into Android 2.1!
White and green HTC splash with loading spinner showing % 0/100 - 4 minutes

SUCCESS! - 23 minutes in total approximately

Are you sure? The latest Orange ROM is not the one being offered for download by Orange. You need to download it from the HTC website - it is described as being especially for Orange phones. Follow the link given previously to find it

pretty sure i installed it, build number currently on my phone is 2.73.61.66 which is the same as the latest orange upgrade.

Thanks HTC/Orange finally rolling out the update.

Hopefully the next update (whatever delicatessen it'll be named after:p) won't be as painfully slow to get to its customers.

No need to download anything.

Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth (tick on).

Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth settings > Discoverable (tick on)

Make sure bluetooth is also enable on the other device (phone / computer) and pair with it by entering the same code number (try 0000) on both devices.

Then send a file to your Hero or send a file from your Hero with Menu > Share > Bluetooth
 
Hey, I'm back off my holidays and very happy! The updates released... yet i havn't got the prompt? I'm on the latest version, iv'e set my date forwards and nada? nothing?!
 
I've already updated to 2.1 but when i check for updates again (out of curiosity!) its starts to download it again - so i pressed cancel of course?

Surely it should only now search for NEW updates and not the current rom i am using?
 
I've also got the anonymous message. First appeared after the update and I had to reboot phone yesterday and the message re-appeared. Any further news as to what this is for?

Must say that the screen appears to be sharper (visually) after 2.1 installed and the only thing I lost was the screen layouts. Everything else was still there.

Quick question re Google Goggles - was reading another site about this and the were numerous posts about not be able to unistall it. Has anyone found this or has it been rectified. Quite like to try it out.

Right, off to play with some screen setups and get some more backgrounds - didn't realise the other ones were going to disappear.

My anon message has now gone, i had to delete about 4 times and it finally never came back not a clue what that was all about
 
Chris Dabnor from the facebook campaign for Orange to release 2.1 says:-

For anyone who isn't getting the 1st Part of the update this might help:
I phoned up Orange on 150 and asked them to send me the update. What they then do is do some sort of update/refresh of your account settings and send you a txt message. The txt message asks you to delete the message and the turn your phone off and ...back on again.
At some point in the next 24 hours after this your phone should try to do any OTA updates that it needs.
It took an hour or so for my phone but it came up with the 1st OTA update. I downloaded and installed this perfectly.
Then I went into Settings > About Phone > System software updates and clicked on Check Now, this prompted me to downloaded the 2nd part.
I now have 2.1 completely installed, all works fine as far as I can tell so far.

I had the same issue too, but after playing with other stuff on the phone for 30 mins or so, I tried again and all was well. I'm guessing just some sort of delay whilst the phone updates Google's servers or something?!
 
confusion.i have build number .66 and set my date forward 2 months ,but no update button in about phone.starting right from the beginning,what can i do??? please.
 
Id just like to thank all in this thread for there posts got the update to 2.1 with great easy and it looks awsome, phone seems twice as quick now and the apps market looks great as well plus and i did not lose anythink info wise cheers.

Been good following this thread kept me away from rooting and has paid off in the end!

To anyone still having trouble persistence is the key plus as i realised you MUST be on the latest 1.5 build for Orange or your getting nothing.
 
How do you configure the trackball light pulse in 2.1? I can only find the led notifications settings.

Ive downloaded the 1st part on thursday, but still haven't received the prompt for the 2nd part.

Ive pressed the check for updates button in the setting a few time and nothing, ive put the date a couple months forward aswell as a year forward, and again nothing, ive also pressed the update button will the date put forward, and that didnt work either.

If anyone could help me with this it would be much appreciated :D.
