Orange UK 2.1 update news

Today I rec'd a message asking whether i would like to update my phone. In the message it suggested that I used WiFi instead of mobile network. I cancelled as I was not connected to WiFi & clicked OK & the message disappeared. I am now in range of my Home WiFi & am at a loss of how I now update the phone as the message is unfindable. HELP!!!!:confused:

I have tried
Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> System software update -> Check now

but System software update -> Check now does not show??????????

nowt on HTC or Orange websites either. I phoned Orange who said they knew nothing about any new updates.:eek:

Can only repeat what i have seen others say about that issue and try the puttting the date forward a month or even a year then maybe restart phone see if it prompts for update.

On another matter i also phoned orange on a unrelated matter on friday and had an interesting chat with a helpful support guy, i felt so sorry for the guy he had no clue 2.1 was out for the hero so i told him all about it. It just seems crazy that no one seems to have informed the support people about the update surely a simple email to all support staff outlining whats going on wouldnt be too much for orange to organise. It looks to me as if orange have a few muppets running the show there. Rant over
 
Bizzarely I put the date BACKWARDS then I got a prompt for the 1st update which I completed. I then got another prompt for the 2.1 update which is currently installing. Looking good!

Oh well yet another way to get an update, everyone just do opposite of what i say on here and its bound to be the right way :D

iv updated to 2.1 and nearly everything is working fine but there are a couple of problems that id like some help with. firstly, the pinch gesture to get all the 7 screens up has stopped working. it worked initially after the update but has stopped for some reason. is there any way that i could have turned it off or anything? another thing is that my sd card is playing up. when i try and save a background to my sd it comes up with a warning saying 'could not save image, please make sure sd card is inserted and mounted'. iv tried unmounting it, removing it and inserting it again but nothing works. iv also got a widget that refreshes that sd card but that doesnt work either. the final problem i have is with my contacts. before the update all my contacts were synced with google but then linked with facebook so that each contact had their profile picture next to them. after the 2.1 update all my google contacts were still there but without their pictures. i synced my contacts with facebook which got the pictures but also added every single one of my facebook friends to my phone book, which i dont want. if i dont sync with facebook but try to link my google contacts with their corresponding facebook profile and search for their name it just says 'no matches found'. none of these problems was apparent before the 2.1 update so if anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. cheers
 
Ive tried everything people have said to do to get the 2nd package on my HTC Hero and nothing is working.

Hope some one can help me
 
Since the update my custom notification sound will not work I can see it in the menu, I can select it (and it plays the audio file) but when I get a text, I just get the default sound. i have tried uninstalling the .amr file from th esd card and reinstalling, but the issue remains.

Any ideas folks?
 
Having had my hero rooted and enjoying the benefits of Android 2.1 and even 2.2 for quite a few months now. I must say that there are good and bad points with running the official orange 2.1 update now that i have unrooted my hero. it seems very fast a pretty smooth in terms of how it now runs with out to many refreshing issues that experienced with running custom 2.1 roms my only gripe would be no friends stream a widget that I really like as it allows you to have a lrg desktop widget that connects your facebook and Twitter accounts its an app I liked and thought was pretty cool. Oh well I guess you can't have it all but it seems strange that it wasn't included in the official orange 2.1 release.

I have an HTC HERO orange branded, unlocked with an unlock code using it in Malta. Last Friday (30th July 2010) I was connecting via wifi and as soon as it connected an OTA update message popped up.... Well i didn't know what to do, so I pressed install later because I had no idea if after the install will it be Sim locked again and I'll have to buy a new unlock code.... Does anyone know if after the 2.1 update will it be Sim locked again please? And if all the apps/games installed will be deleted ?

Updating to 2.1 won't lock your phone as my hero was originally locked to orange till I purchased the unlocking codes I have since updated to the official orange 2.1 update with no problems my hero was also rooted running custom roms and it has not effected this so you shouldnt have any problems.

I don't know about the Sim locking however you should not lose any of your apps / games

Was looking forward to having a working HTC Hero after this 2.1 update but it's not to be. Gone are the network error messages now it just misses calls constantly even when it's showing full signal and when trying to make calls it just does the beep like you get when you end a call without actually ringing out.

Still constantly asking for the time zone. A full 100% charged battery lasts a total of 18 hours and thats without receiving or making calls, not using mobile internet or WiFi and without installing any apps. HTC Sync constantly shows the phone as being disconnected.

Is anyone else having these issues since installing the 2.1 Android update?

HTC blame it on the Orange software, Orange blame it on HTC.
 
just a quick update on 2.1, seems everything is working ok so far except i canot send or receive MMS messages. Have put the same settings back on and tried new ones, Mobile Web is fine but just cannot get them to work.
Anyone else got this prob? If yours is working what settings do you have?

Updated last week, no problems. Had everything backed up (My Backup Pro - brilliant and worth every penny) so no problems.

However, I haven't been able to connect the phone to my car kit since. It will pair but will not connect and cycles on and off every 5 seconds or so....The car kit is a COMAND system in a Merc. Seems like it's a common issue....

Just finished setting up and testing mine and it works fine. I have a Bury CC9060 BT car kit wired into the car audio. Paired, copied phone book and works when I phone. Also picks up my phone's sat nav commands - both Sygic and Google Nav.

However car makers built in car kits are notoriously picky about what phones they will and will not pair with. Have you contacted Merc to see if you have the latest firmware?

It seems its a common problem with this update and some bluetooth kits. It worked perfectly with 1.5

I want to go back!! Is it possible?
 
I've been doing some searching online to see if any others have had problems since 2.1 update and it appears that there are. The best one I found so far was this one * List of Issues in Sprint Hero 2.1 Android Upgrade So Far* - HTC Hero (Sprint) - Android Forums - HTC Community

I know it refers to a Sprint Hero but its basically the same thing as the UK Hero minus some cosmetic differences. The first post is updated with 2.1 issues from America when they had there 2.1 update. Some of the faults seem to be a regular occurrence in the UK too. Makes you wonder if HTC new about these faults back in May why on earth go ahead with the same faults and launch it over here? It mentions the Bluetooth Connectivity fault amongst others.
 
Hi updated to 2.1 and lovin it so far. one problem i have is that i backed up all my apps on astro and loaded them back on after updating rom, but problem is that they are not in the market so i cant get updates the only way i would be able to get them is by downloading it again and that will just take ages. is there any way to get the market to realise i have them??
 
ok seems like orange have got there act sorted , am running at mo villian 12 how do i put phone back to get orange 2.1 , thx

I've just upgraded to 2.1 update 1 (which appears to be obtained by accepting yet another update after you have downloaded and set up 2.1).
I have played with the phone a fair bit and put all my apps back in place (just a case of pulling them out of the 'All programs' selection window).
One good improvement from my point of view is that I can now use my old Nokia BH200 bluetooth earpiece for mobile calls - it wouldn't work when the phone was running the original firmware.
