Orange UK 2.1 update news

Marti (Pellow?!) :)

Yup thats full fat Android 2.1 Hero, on Lemon :) so happy days you are the owner of Hero 2.1.......

Full factory reset? I did mine yesterday after similar performance issues has helped alot....ALSO have you checked how it's connecting to the tower?

Menu, Wireless & Networks, Mobile Networks, Network Mode, set it to GSM only, you might be between 2 towers one giving HDPSA the other Edge or similar if it cant decide it might be flicking between the 2 cells, I know you say the iPoo dosent do it, but I dont know how they handle that sort of thing....anyway 'tis a thought and worth a go :)

Nah Im Pellows better looking twin,

Isnt GSM a basic signal, like 2G? I'll give it a go. As for factory reset, I looked under settings and couldnt see it, am I missing it?

Marti ...

PS: its cool, I googled it, here's hopeing

turn off the phone, then turn it on holding the secret combination of buttons as found here.......

HTC Hero - How do I reset and restore my phone back to the factory default settings?

will wipe all everything...back up first, I then just put the apps on that I wanted back etc.

Yes SM is just the 2G (and edge I think ie 2.5G) Orange are restructuring the towers so like I say try it and see, I know here I get issues if at the back of the house as it can "see" 2 towers (all very Tolkien!!) so just use wi-fi and GSM :)

Help!! I've been reading through this thread trying to find a solution but as yet haven't found anything that works...

I'm on Orange and I'm trying to update the ROM as I've read that this will then enable me to get 2.1. When I connect my Hero to my computer (Windows 7) in HTC sync and on the phone it says that the phone is connected to the computer. However, when I try to run the ROM update program it says that the phone is not connected to the computer and to check my connections. I've tried many times and tried taking the battery out while the phone was connected but nothing is working.

Anyone any idea what I can do to overcome this, I'm desperate to get 2.1!!

the update is OTA (over the air) so not sure what you are actually trying to do, also you are probs best using an XP machine as win7 seems not to like the hero

He's updating to a more recent version of 1.5 to get the OTA update to come.

You're right about switching to XP/Vista if you can though, 7 can be a bit uncooperative.

Thx for the help Deech, yeah i did a restore (forgetting to back up) lost some pics and notes, all numbers were google sync'ed so didnt have to worry about that.

Yeah the tower thing, theres one down the hill from me, but I dont make a point of looking for them (i will now though) and Ive heard orange has bought over T-mobile so the signal should improve. Yeah right, I cant get a T-mob signal in my house period lol

My signal hasnt changed so I'll stick to 2G for now. Thanks :D

Sounds like a USB driver issue to me. I had loads of problems with this. You must manually update the driver using 'have disk' so it shows My HTC.

Once I got it to this stage it worked like a dream.

It was such a stressful experience that I'm forgetting the official Orange 2.1 Rom and sticking with villainROM 12

Striker, could you please help me, I am finding that although my phone is recognised by my Windows 7 computer, and I can sync it with HTC sync, when I go to run the ROM update program it says that the phone cannot be detected and to check the USB connection?! Do I need to do something with the drivers?

Woo Hoo! I just did it! Huge thanks to this thread, you're all awesome.

Is the thumbnail view of the homescreens new or did I just miss that before? My theme has been cleared, but all my apps and text messages seem present and correct. It's so pretty!!!

I have to admit I've been having the screen prompt to download 2.1 for over a month now and I kept cancelling it because I'm not naturally techy and it scared the bejeesus out of me. I think I'm only just geeky enough to realise Android is far superior to the iPhone :)

Just realised my contacts have gone a little skewiff, but I guess they'll all sync from Google shortly. Argh! It's wiped my saved Scene... oh well, will start from scratch.

Are people still getting the issue with contacts not saving properly if they save from a phonecall?

EDIT: Oh, and I got the blank unread message too.

Hi, I've had the 2.1 upgrade on Orange for the last couple of of months now and find it ok.
However, if I do a factory reset, will the phone revert to the old one ?

Thanks.

I had another update a couple of days ago, which seems to have killed swype, anybody else had similar?
My software number is now listed as:
3.32.405.2
Basband version
63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.11
Build
3.32.405.2 CL191507 release keys

Not that I know what relevance any of that has! Anybody else have swype killed? any quick fix?

That was the update that adds the G-Sensor Calibration tool back.

Have you tried reinstalling Swype?

Thanks, I thought that might be the case, nothing`s ever that easy

Jeff.

Are you looking to switch back?

I think you should just be able to install the most recent 1.5 firmware via the PC. It might need a goldcard, but I'm not sure.

I was upgrading to the Desire & passing the Hero on. Whilst clearing the phone of all my stuff, I had to do a factory reset to clear the Google & other email accounts, otherwise it would have put all my contact etc back on the next time it synced.
Anyway, to answer my original question, the good news is is that the phone kept the 2.1 update. :D I hope this helps others wondering the same.

Jeff.

Hi folks,

I have an Orange branded Hero on 1.5 (bought Aug 2009, updated to 1.5 in Sept 09).

Current build: 2.73.61.5

I hear people saying update to .66 from the HTC site, then move the clock forward to get the update to come through.

.66 wipes the phone, update doesn't.

The thing is, I have been asked about the OTA update before, and changing my phone to 2012 just now prompted it to ask me if I wanted to update.

Question: Do I *need* to update the ROM to .66? If I just update without the ROM I won't lose all my settings.

Maybe I am getting old but I really can't be bothered to get all my stuff back on the phone, it took me long enough to get it the way I wanted! Also, I have heard so many stories about things that don't work properly after the update I am in 2 minds whether to do it anyway! Can you go back?

Just put the date forward a couple

Well the perceived wisdom is that you had to have .66 on before you could update OTA. As I understand it the phone could not carry out OTA updates unless .66 was on it. However your experience suggests otherwise! I have not heard of anybody else on Orange being able to update without .66. I suppose you could try it and see, but I would suggest the safer way is to install .66 first

I used a backup utility on a 30 day free trial and backed up everything before I started. I was suprised how easy the whole process (including installing .66) was and I was up and running again within an hour, and had restored my phone to what it was like before within another hour. So the process is not that difficult.

And 2.1 is much better for me. The phone seems quicker and slicker and I like the better Bluetooth, the access to many more apps, and HTC Sync 3. And (touch wood) I have had none of the problems that others have reported. I have not regretted the couple of hours it took to update and restore.

Interesting.

If it doesn't work, a bit dangerous to offer OTA updates - my wife's hero did the same (on the same version as mine currently) and she would just have gone for it if I hadn't said it might wipe everything...

As for backups, I used Sprite Backup when I changed to Cupcake last September and it screwed up all my text messages as apparently things weren't stored in the same format. Will this happen again or does a full MyBackup / Sprite Backup work properly this time?

I used Mybackup and I still have my texts from before the upgrade so it must have worked! I can't remember why or how because texts are not important to me (I use email much more), but I must have got them saved using Mybackup as that was all I used. Have a look at the 30 day free version and see if it saves them (mine has now run out so can't check).

Even if you go for the OTA update you are being offered I would still back up anyway because there is no guarantee that it will not wipe everything.

Cheers - can't use the trial of mybackup as I used it when I last upgraded!

I do own Sprite though.

ISTR the problem was that the indexing had changed so they all appeared out of order. It was a right old mess and I ended up restoring without the backup of the texts.

Hi,

I have an Orange branded Hero contracted via the Tesco phone shop. It has been running Android 1.5 with current build 2.73.61.5 since I got it about 10 months ago.

Last night I had a message that an update was available. "OK" It downloaded, installed and rebooted but then it told me an update was available. Oh no, not a neverending loop! I could still see my wallpaper and icons around the message in the background so my settings and data seemed to be intact.

Then I noticed this second message was longer so I OKed that as well. The update downloaded, installed, rebooted and this time did not offer another update.

First thing I saw was my wallpaper, icons, Labels/Folders and bling had vanished but my Apps and Games were still stored on the phone. This wouldn't have mattered as I have MyBackupPro, but I am curious about how they weren't wiped. Would MyBackupPro have done that automatically? I didn't even have to restore anything.

Now my phone says:

Firmware 2.1-update 1
Baseband 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14
Kernel 2.6.29.920
Build 3.41.61.3
Software 3.41.61.3
Browser Webkit 3.1

My Hero now has better Market, Maps, Browser (pinch zoom now smoother than Dolphin's) and other subtle changes such as extra clocks and faster keyboard - no more muddled words - brighter screen, power switchy things, and Bluetooth FILE TRANSFER at last!

All this was over the air, no PC involved. The only things I did were "OK" twice, and put icons and widgets and labels back where I needed them.

Knowing the update was due one day. I had taken photos of each of my seven screens so that I could set them up my way, without having to remember what went where. I had my Hero fully sorted out within about 30 - 40 minutes from the first message. Great!
