Root Overclocking Ally

Decided to go ahead and test with my own rom.

Firewind v0.4 (yes that's my roms name)
729mhz
78.8F

Phone rarely heats up at all with my rom. With velocity i would get temperatures ranging from 90-100% F

maybe thats why it rebooted a couple times playing Antigen just a few days after i got it....that was long before i was even thinking about flashing roms and overclocking....maybe i should file a warranty replacement claim with LG?

unless you're specifically having problems with the phone running with the stock ROM and not rooted, then there's nothing that the warranty would cover. Just because you can't OC means nothing to verizon or LG, as 600 mhz was the speed this processor was designed to run at. Like someone said earlier in this post, it looks as though your cpu BARELY passed quality control...

I had 768 up for 2 1/2 days with normal phone/email/web usage. I used my video recorder for 10 minutes and when I switched to camera mode I got a kernel panic. So I'm going to experiment with using the camera a bunch to see if it causes crashing consistently. I'm also going to see if using the music and navigation programs at the same time will cause kernel panics on 768.

like i said, it had rebooted itself a few times before any of this, before i ever flashed a rom or installed setCPU

a couple times playing Antigen, and game you can get from the market for free, and then a couple times when having several browser tabs open and launching a video.....

so i called them up, they asked about memory usage and apps. i had 35Mb free at that time. her response was WOW, you're running really low on memory. to which i said not really, thats only 65% utilization considering the 100Mb or so you left us free after installing all those apps we may not care about but have no way to remove.......

so she's like, let me call LG and find out what the minimum is required to run without rebooting. i told her that should be zero, the device should never reboot like that from intended usage. then i grabbed my wifes ally, checked it. i told the rep her phone has a whole 15Mb's free and has not experienced any reboots at all

so then she says LG couldn't give her an answer, the only thing to do is to flash back to stock, removing all apps, and install one or two apps and seeing if it still happened. then after 2-3 days install a couple more apps. and to keep doing this until we found the point at which it starts having problems, then we know how much memory we need free.....which is absolutely ridiculous. i am not treating my new smartphone with kids gloves, especially when it is clearly malfunctioning. she's pretty clever in that by the time i find the breaking point i will be outside of the cancellation period without penalty you see....

i told her to suck it. i bought a smartphone running android to USE it. i should be able to completely fill the memory and still use it. would it be slower? sure. but it shouldn't reboot randomly? no, thats a sign of hardware failure, and asked her to explain my wifes phone running its ass off with 15Mb's free and no problems....she's like eh......

here's the thing, the first few times it did this i shrugged it off, but once i put setCPU on and tried to even run one step higher than stock and found out it would not run 30 seconds that way....just exposes the defect in it even more

it's not even about overclocking it now as i have since flashed back to original rom and uninstalled setCPU, now its about finding out i am going to have to carry this thing for the next two years, having to be extra careful not to overload it by actually running an app that makes it work, wondering when it's going to reboot on me.....it's BS and i will be taking it into a local Verizon store and demand a new handset or we can just cancel the contract

velocity 0.1.1 R1L theme Launcher pro
787mhz
>87 F at all times
10 hours
for Dev (thanks btw) i cant just upon boot set imediatly to 787 i have to slowly get there or else i kernal panic after a few min but if i slowly get there no prob so when can we expect beta 2:D ? mabye so we dont have to use set cpu or maybey a 1ghz:D? ill be the alpha tester for that:D
P.s. about me im very new to this but im very fast learner i already am advanced in my belief in roms themes and backups and restores nut im learning very quikly in oc :D

Interestingly, I rooted my wife's phone and added the OC kernel and the v8 stock rom (didn't think she'd like velocity) and for some strange reason it can only handle 729mhz before getting a kernel panic. My ally has been at 768mhz for days. We both have the ARM v6 processor rev 5 with Architecture 6TEJ.

So here is what I am wondering....

I rooted my phone the old fashioned way and used Universal Androot for hers. So MAYBE, 'UniAnd' is leaving something out of the rooting process that prevents SetCPU from operating correctly.

well that does sound like a terrible quality control issue. IDK. I'm looking forward to see what progress LG has made in the 2.2 fixes.

what sucks is when your cpu reboots even at stock speeds and with stock rom, etc....its a common complaint with this device if you do some looking at the Verizon support forums

LG has admitted it is in need of fixing there even

i contacted Verizon as the phone is less than a month old

they are basically making up excuses, wanting me to do all sort of "testing" and troubleshooting involving doing a factory reset, removing all apps, and only installing a couple apps at a time

they blame it on either low memory (i had 35Mb's free, wifes Ally had 15 free and has not restarted once) or apps not compatible with each other

im seriously thinking about trading up for the Samsung Fascinates, $200 for two of those looks really good right now compared to this for two more years

414155ms stress test no errors
768khz max 320khz min
7.915mflops
purchased phone in june

i tried 787 but it gave me kernel panic after 2-3 min

EDIT: after 2 hours I got a kernel panic, i noticed that both times it happened when a google voice text notification came in, though plenty had come in before that

Rom: velocity 0.2
Purchase/Manufacture date: bought in july
Max stable speed for your device: current testing 768, every other speed has been stable
Max observed cpu temp: 32c
Comments: thank you so much. this is absolutely awesome.

Need a link to an unmodified rom for the ally

running droid 2.1 update 1.

running 2 days now @ 748mhz no problems <90F under load and while gaming.
