Root Phone randomly reboots with ROMS

Hi all,

I've recently tried both MikG (latest 3.11) and The Classic. With MikG, my phone would spontaneously reboot from what I assume was overheating. It would generally reboot when it got hot. I used a custom Anthrax kernel. I'm now using The Classic by tommytomato (no custom kernel or anything but the ROM) and find it reboots too, even when not hot. :-( I formatted the card and wiped everything before flashing. I use AmonRa.

Does anyone know if I'm just having bad luck with my phone or is this an issue with the phone itself? Do all ROMs do this? I'm pretty frustrated with this whole thing so far. Any advice?

Have you used setcpu or the classic app to adjust your frequencies? How long is it before it reboots, an hour, a day? Try updating your prl and profile update

I have had this happen with cyanogenmod 9 .......It looks for updates at certain times and after the update check the phone reboots

This doesn't happen everyday tho

Mine just did this Friday for the first time that I'm aware of. I was sitting on the lunch room at work and the phone was just sitting there on the table "sleeping" and I noticed out of the corner of my eye it was on the white evo 4g splash.

it booted and all was okay...but weird.

I'm on Mikg 3.11 w/ amon ra

like andy was asking about setcpu if you overclock to high you can get it to where the phone is too unstable and will reboot. this is not a common thing.

now if that is not the case then it could possibly be the phone itself and not the roms you are flashing. i had this very same issue on cm7. it would randomly get super hot and then reboot. i also tried on other roms as well. i even tried a ruu and got the phone back to stock and it still did the rboots. my next quest was to unroot it and it still reboots. fortunately this was during the time when the evos where not eol so i took it in to sprint and showed how my evo can reboot. they ordered me a refurbished evo and everything was fine after that.

but now it is different you have to go thru the insurance company if you have insurance for it and pay the deductible.

I used setcpu with MikG and it didn't help much. It would reboot way under 998 frequency and I've never gone over that. I do not overclock. Reboots occur regularly every day, especially with heavier phone use. What does an updated prl/profile do for me and what's the best way to do that? Flash? Any dangers?

Thanks.

prl and profiles might help with 3g and 4g signals so that the phone does not have to work hard searching for a signal. it might help, it might not. to update them go into your phone's settings and scroll down to system updates, select prl and then select profile.

you will not brick your phone. you should check periodically as they might get updated.

Done. Thanks for that advice. If this for some reason does not resolve the reboots, then it sounds to me like an issue with my phone itself. :-( I'm past the 2 year contract mark, but really like my EVO. It's been the first cool smartphone that I've ever owned.

Will reply back if the reboots continue.

The Classic did not reboot again after updating my profile and prl, although I didn't try any high intensity games. I recently tried MikG again and it reboots no matter what I do. I'm going to try a few others and then maybe go back to The Classic and try that one some more. I just wish I was having a more stable time customizing with ROMs.

Just thinking here about your issue, and just throwing this out there, could it be, possibly an aging battery?

Edit: lo and behold, looky what I found...

Thanks! So low voltage to the CPU is another thing to look into. Do you happen to know how to up voltage in the MikG ROMs? That's my favorite and I haven't been able to use it. :-( Is there an app or would I need to flash a custom kernel like Anthrax? I've tried Anthrax before, but I think frequency is what I changed. Would SetCPU help with voltage?

Shouldn't be an aging battery as I just replaced mine recently and it happened both with the old and new. :-)

To change voltages you need a HAVs kernel. It basically contains a voltage table for each frequency range that can be edited. I'm not sure how many there are for Sense Gb, but the underworld kernels have it.
As regards to an app, I know incredicontrol works. There are others.
You can try vipermod too, which is run in T.E. but again you need a HAVs kernel.
I'm not sure about within Mik ROMs though, sorry:(

Caine's kernels are the only Gb sense HAVs kernels.

Ok, I could try that. I wasn't able to find a link though. Is that the name of the kernel itself?

Here is a link for his latest version:

Also here is a link for Incredicontrol....to change voltages:

I have a copy somewhere for the stock voltages but I can't seem to find it, but I will look around and post back with it.:)

Edit: try this link for stock voltages...

Ok, I tried Underworld Sense Kernel and it did give me the option to change voltages in IncrediControl, but the kernel itself was really slow and choppy, even on the performance governor. Is this the only voltage adjustable kernel out there?

I decided to try the Classic Sense Kernel instead from the MikG forum and so far the SBC one appears to be working great. Speedy enough, but without making my phone too hot. I think max temperature so far from normal everyday use (no games yet) has not exceeded 102 F. I still need to try some games, though, as that's one of the reasons I began looking around at other ROMs/Kernels in the first place.

I am not sure atm, but fwiw, my phone with normal use for about 10 minutes of, lets say, on tapatalk, will get to about 103-104 or so. I dont play games at all so I cant say how hot it gets.
I would worry at the 118-120 degree range but dont quote me 'cuz that's when I worry myself :)

Any kernel should be voltage adjustable. You just need a seperate app to control it.

Many kernels are already undervolted. If your device is slow on the stock settings you could up the voltages a bit to help

I'm out of the game as far as the OG EVO goes, so hopefully someone else can chime in on whats needed.

You just have to remember that every phones different, so that kernel may not work for you :)

Wow, I've only ever gotten to 111 before my phone reboots.

The max I've got is around that 118 range while playing games and have my phone freeze and reboot. I think that is mainly due to governor/scheduler combo I had.
I've seen recommended performance governor with vr scheduler with cpu slightly oc'd is better for gaming.

My phone rebooted today again while on Facebook. It wasn't that hot either. It then kept rebooting during the boot animation for some reason. I pulled the battery, wiped the cache/dalvik, and then rebooted. Maybe I just need a new phone. :-(

That's called a boot loop. Can you describe what kernel setting you were using for the CPU?

Defaults that come w/ SetCPU. :-( 998 upper, 2-something lower, on demand governor, nothing too special. I hear Smartass is good, but that always seemed a little slow to me. Any ideas? I really appreciate the help so far.

You might want to fix permission after clearing cache and dalvik too. That should be in the 'other' menu.

What kernel you using, Classic?
Try intellidemand, or ondemandx, if there. SmartassV2 is better than the original. Also what io scheduler you using? sio is usually reliable.

Will try fix permissions and will see if that helps.

Yeah, I'm using Classic. But unfortunately I only have four governor options with this kernel and none of them you listed. Should I try Anthrax again instead? I think I recall that one having more governor options.
