Help Please help Touch won't work on Screen

got called away
had installed Java SE Development Kit 7 then installed Eclipse Classic 3.7.1
just about to DL the sdk starter package and has BSOD sigh :( i hate vista

moving onto win 7 desktop and starting again will be more stable...will keep posting progress and will be back if need assistance thx ;-)

downloading and installing all platforms into SDK mistakenly accepted ALL instead of recommended... so this could take some time.

5. Install the app via adb (this will actually cause it to start in the background):

Code:
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools> adb install myphoneexplorer.apk
Sorry how do i do this I've installed everything on PC and moved the MPE apk to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools
in there is the adb.exe

I'm running Android SDK and AVD manager and the phone is connected by USB

Do I need to add a new virtual device?in that section there is nothing...

lucids,

No, you don't need a virtual device--that's only for when/if you are doing Android programming/development (i.e., writing Android apps).

If you've got the platform-tools folder with adb.exe in it, you are good to go. You should be able to follow the instructions I posted above to get the app installed. From there, you'll have to get the PC side of this application running in order to talk to the client that is running on your phone.

Let us know :).

Cheers!

You need to open a command prompt, then navigate to the platform tools folder via the command prompt.

so cd\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

Then type the command "adb install myphoneexplorer.apk" (minus the quotes)

Sniped! :p

Sigh...I get
error: device not found
Should it detect the phone or do i need to do anything else?

ran command prompt and changed directory to platform-tools folder then typed adb install myphoneexplorer.apk

Once it's done it's thing, wait a minute for the app on the phone to install and kick in. Can you see anything on the notification bar of the phone? A grey circle with 2 arrows in it?

Run the PC client, then hit File -> Settings -> Connections -> USB -> Ok

Then Hit File -> Connect.

If all has done as it should, you should see the grey icon on the handset turn blue. If it has you're connected. You can then use the Sync icon to sync your contacts and SMS.

Sniped again.

In the command prompt window, type adb devices.

but i get the error device not found while in the command prompt when i type adb install myphoneexplorer.apk

that cant be right can it?

in CP when i run "adb devices" nothing is listed on next line

lucids,

Its sounds like you'll need the adb USB device drivers (this always seems to be a sticking-point with HTC phones regarding getting adb to work--apologies for forgetting about this issue).

I know for my HTC Droid Eris, that installing HTC Sync usually provided / selected the proper drivers for your PC.

I've also got a selection of USB drivers that I could send you if you need or want (just PM me with your email address or send an email to me at scary.alien@gmail.com and I'll send 'em to you).

I figured El Presidente might have a good suggestion re. this since I don't have the Desire HD and you guys do.

Let me know...we'll get this figured-out.

Yeah, you posted about a second before I did, so when I saw your post, I stuck in a really unobvious edit. :o

In the command prompt window, type "adb devices" that will tell you if you're connected.

EDIT - Seriously, stop sniping me folks.... :p

lucids, I presumed from your first post, you'd HTC Sync installed?

Scary, I'm correct in assuming that you need USB Debugging enabled for ADB to work, could be that be the issue?

Ok will pm u now with addy, btw HTC Sync is already installed and icon appears in notification section of taskbar.

1st thing i did when switching to W7 desktop was install htc sync which then updated to latest version

The phone connects in "charge only" mode

I removed the SD card but put a Pay and go SIM in that doesn't have sim pin security on

Do i need to have a SD card in there?

Oh yes! Excellent point and reminder...

This could be the issue since adb won't be able to "see" the device.

Doesn't sound good, especially since HTC Sync is already installed...

I'll send the USB drivers that I have to lucids anyway just in case that might help, but yeah, El Presidente is right, USB Debugging might be the sticking-point.

If you go to your PC, open the start menu and type 'device manager' abs hit enter, can you see an option related to your phone?

The specific wording of the phone's entry in that list might be able to tell us if the divers are installed ok.

I have Portable Devices->F:\
which in properties -general shows manufacturer HTC location on UMBus Enumerator

MS drivers are in system32\drivers\UMDF\WpdFs.dll
and system32\drivers\WUDFRd.sys

Details tab shows Device description as Android phone

Does this mean the drivers are installed?

I have the drivers from scary..

Using the win7 x86 folder
cant install the inf files directly vi right click-install (not supported)

or
via device manager- update from the F-portable device either auto or manually as says best driver installed :(

also in disk drives i have HTC Android Phone USB device
will try that- no cant install via that
I guess drivers installed are ok

Ah well guess there's no more that can be done

All I can do is try get in touch with Regenisis who act as service agents for HTC and try to make sure they don't wipe the phone.

Thank you all so much for the help I've had on this thread.

When I was setting up ADB a few days ago, the phone was showing up under 'Other devices', although I forget what it was called. At that point it was giving me the device not found error.

After I installed HTC Sync (including the phone drivers), it moved to the very top of the list under 'Android USB Devices' -> 'My HTC'. It seems to also be listed as 'Portable Devices' -> 'F', but the 'My HTC part seems to be the key.

You might want to try completely uninstalling HTC Sync and the drivers and then reinstall it (all with the phone unplugged from the PC).

Ok thx will try...uninstalled HTC sync and HTC Driver from start menu will reboot and reinstall with no phone connected and try once more

Done

If it's not finding the handset after a fresh install of HTC Sync, I suspect USB Debugging isn't enabled so it's not going to work unfortunately.

Did the vcf files you've already saved contain anything noteworthy?

Only really charge it with the HTC charger, or occasionally when in the car if using sat nav but will need a new one for car as it seems its only charging via usb not ac mode.

This did happen just after the battery went very low and power saver came on and i put it on charge for an hour or so when home, but the touch won't work whether plugged in or not, and wasnt plugged in when it started. I was starting an app and it was stuck in initialising so i had to remove the batt and restart.

I guess it may be the de bugging or something else, even though i'm pretty sure i remember making sure it was enabled.

Ah well as i said all i can hope for is Regenisis follow instructions and don't wipe the phone. I guess the digitiser has completely failed, seems it should last linger than 6 months though.

Thanks again for all the help, and if anyone has any other ideas, maybe running a file on sd card in recovery mode that might help...or anyway of reflashing gingerbread without wiping, just to see if it is sw not hw.

Either way thanks again for help. :D

edit
re the vcfs
2 of them (the newest) about 3 mb read as garbage, the other 2. 1 is old gmal contacts (small no) and the other is the old back up before i added nos and tidied up the contacts, so not all is lost.

I managed to test them on a desire and thats the only one worth importing. i do remember that even though it refused to sync to gmail it did to facebook so maybe i will be able to compare with that. But Fb is weird as it somehow but a load of complete stranger profiles in there. Hmm i can see this being a long job of re construction. i will make sure it won't happen again for sure.

lucids,

Yeah, I figured it was a shot in the dark re. whether or not you had been keeping it on the charger or not...

No problem re. the help thing...that's what we're here for :).

Are you rooted and/or have a custom recovery (Amon_RA or ClockworkMod) installed?

I don't know the ins and out of the Desire rooting scene, but I can sort of envision being able to flash an update.zip that executes a setprop persist.service.adb.enable 1 command since custom recoveries don't usually require the use of the touchscreen (at least they don't on my HTC Droid Eris or the Moto Droid X).

I've tested this manually via the Android Terminal Emulator, so I know that's the proper setprop command. What's interesting is that the Settings apps doesn't "see" these changes in the value, but the manual changing of the values in setprop does indeed do the trick.

I've never (yet) built an update.zip file before, but I'd be happy to try to do this for you if you do indeed have a custom recovery installed.

Let me know. I'll start some research in the meantime and I'll drag my Eris out of the drawer for a little testing.

Cheers!

Are they gonna charge or sort under warranty?

I know the DHD doesn't like 3rd party chargers but I've never heard of one actually damaging the phone before. Moot if it was the official one though.

Sorry it never worked, hopefully they won't wipe the handset when they fix.

Scary, GB on the DHD is unrootable, you need to downgrade back to 2.2 to achieve permaroot. You can kind of root to backup before hand, but you need ADB.....
