Please, please turn off your Ad Blockers

Came across this pop-up message on the The Official Site of the Seattle Seahawks | Seahawks.com webpage:

We noticed that you may have an Ad Blocker turned on. Please be aware that our site is best experienced with Ad Blockers turned off.

Really? I will have a "better" experience with all those ads slowing down my connection, cluttering up the page and annoying the hell out me?

At least tell the truth and post this message:

We noticed that you may have an Ad Blocker turned on. Please be aware that our site earns revenue from ads so please help us feed our families by turning off your Ad Blockers. Remember, it's all about the money.

I understand that many sites make money only by users clicking through on the ads. And I'm familiar with the debate over ad blockers. So it's a gray area.

But one thing that is not gray is that my "experience" with an ad blocker is vastly improved over surfing without an ad blocker.

i wonder what explantion they would give to .. prove their point???
how can ads.. improve the experience/speed/cost/stability?

I've used Adblock Plus since its earliest days, and I have no qualms about not seeing a site's ads. However, I have to add that sites I use regularly (the LA Times, Android Forums, and others) I have paid memberships on. I'm supporting them with my membership fees, so I don't feel guilty about NOT visiting their sponsors' ads. Also, all that flashing and whirling and twirling causes me HUGE problems so, yeah, no ads for me.

Agreed. My web surfing experience is improved without ads as well. More secure too. I even use an ad blocker on my phone. Ads are just plain annoying.

I don't mind static ads on the side or not right in my face. I do mind moving flashing ads all over the place.
Since more ads seem to be large and flashy I use, and will continue using, ABP.

I really hate the ads that expand and or incorporate sound. I follow a similar approach that MoodyBlues uses for both websites and apps. I have no problem buying a premium app/membership to remove ads and support the site or developer.

I have Adblock on the laptop. I have no idea what it's blocking as I use NoScript and Ghostery more. I can also turn off images on the fly. There's a button to turn off audio right where I can get at it.

I have both FX using Private Browsing and Iron set to delete everything on shutdown. On Iron, I delete history.

The ads are usually only advertising junk. At least on the phone - I've seen sleazy check your credit, dating services, and the like. Now if the ads were smart like the old Absolut Vodka or some of the old VW ads, it might be more interesting.

Screaming BUY ME!!!! NOW!!, just makes me run in the other direction.

I think just about any Internet user would agree that ads are annoying.

But what really got my goat about this pop-up message on the Seahawks website was the arrogance of the comment that their website is better viewed without an ad blocker.

This is the same arrogance displayed by cable and phone companies when they reduce the quality of your service while raising the rates and then claiming it's all to benefit their customers.

This is the same arrogance displayed by the MPAA when they force consumers to watch endless FBI warnings and unskippable previews to third box-office flops to enhance the viewer's experience.

This is the same arrogance displayed by politicians when they say "we are here to look out for the best interest of our citizens."

Sorry for the bitter tone...but this type of stuff really gets under my skin. Calgon, take me away!

I tried viewing the Seahawk's site without an ad-blocker in Safari, and it gave me a bloody great popup-ad for NFL Game Pass subscriptions, completely obscuring the Seahawk's own site.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:
"Please be aware that our site is best experienced with Ad Blockers turned off."
:banghead::banghead:

BTW NFL Game Pass is actually available in China...NO United States only nonsense here.

What we should lament more than the presence of ads is the fact that they only exist because PEOPLE ACTUALLY CLICK THEM.

The whole "turn off your ad blocker" thing is pointless. Anyone that goes to the trouble of installing an ad blocker in the first place is almost certainly not going to click through your ads, even if you get them to turn it off. All you're accomplishing is to annoy those viewers who use the blockers and make up a very tiny percentage of your overall site viewers. Most will go away and never return, losing you any possible word of mouth. I understand their point, but it's vindictive and simply not worth the effort.

I see the seahawks are trying to get all the revenue they can until their fairweather fans bail on them.

That's what makes even less sense. The Seahawks are a for-profit company that makes TONS of money in their primary business. Why on earth would they need to get a little extra from a couple ads on their page?

Actually, those pages are all hosted by the NFL! Much like MLB (I hear MLB actually designed the NFL pages) the NFL hosts the pages for the teams and provides a template for the page, the team just fills in what they want on it, within the guidelines of the template. I went to my team's page (Giants) and got the same message.

Not surprising they were removed, Google is basically an ad company, and many ads one sees are served by Adsense, Double Click and Admob, all Google properties.

True enough.. I tend to use things like NoScript etc on my laptop. I don't care for those ads that run all over the screen. The ones that are on the side aren't bad, and if they are actually for something good I may even go look.

As providers move to caped data connections more and more people will turn to ad blockers to save their MB for things they want to see. I suspect it won't be long till we see the .gov making laws to restrict ads like what happened with the telemarketers.

Everything I have uses ad blockers. I root my phones for no other reason then to use as blockers. I once was OK with ads, then some one took advantage (no pun intended) of the situation and everyone lost a few cent from me.
