Please post here when you receive ics ota

I've been on the phone with LG and Verizon today both saying the same thing that its up to Verizon or its up to LG blah blah. but I did talk to someone somewhat helpful. at Verizon that told me not to expect any kind of official announcement that ics is coming to the spectrum for at least a month

MrB206. I find you condescending. I'm very rational and am an advanced degreed engineer. I've been doing software programming since 1975.

No - I do not have a law degree... But I have been married to a lawyer, and consulted other lawyers about this.

You are right about one thing: I mis-represented the MPG analogy - I had meant to write something more along the lines of "engine control module firmware update by 2nd QTR" to improve mileage and coordination with the transmission control module to maximize fuel economy.

Yeah, right.

But seriously, there are people claiming engineers internal to LG were told to stop working on SW updates in favor of new phones. Now whether they were told to stop, or VZW didn't fund them to continue, if that were true, that would be pretty damning. It's a good possibility. Look, they can't possibly validate all the SW updates on all of their phones. They are not staffed to do so. But yet, they still introduce new models from OEMs with a slew of issues.

I live far from a dream world, I assure you. This situation has clearly met the criteria as put forth by the FTC. The manufacturers and the OEMs just haven't been made accountable on a large scale basis yet, and so the practice continues. But this situation is deceptive, fraudulent, and illegal.

Your opinion is just that - yours. Other rational people might wonder why you are debating the point... but it is your right, just as it is mine to assert my position... so I defend you in that regard, and do not belittle you.

BTW: VZW is responding to BBB claimants.

The title and intent of this thread is to "post here when you receive the ICS OTA" for the LG Spectrum.

While I think much of the recent prior discussion is interesting from a debate point-of-view, it's not really on-topic and is getting closer to a topic more relevant for the Lounge forum than this one, so I would please ask that that type of dialog take place over there.

Cheers and thanks!

Seriously guys I just came back to check out how the spec was doing and you all need to do what I did months ago! Buy a used gnex and sell your spec on ebay. Problem solved.

Gnex waste of time , spectrum or gs3. Got my gs3 cranked to 2ghz and 1275 undervolted. Wait until the spec gets it update from the devs, you will be wishing for the spec.

the gnex is a bad phone. the spectrum has way better specs. it has a faster processor, the gnex screen is not even a hd screen because of the on screen buttons. and the screen is a pentile matrix screen which means you can see pixels. the only good side of the gnex is that it gets software updates first. other than that the gnex is crap

^^^ I respectfully disagree :) [about it being crap, LOL].

We did just finally get our JB update from VZW -- long after all the other GSM phones got theirs, so there's a bit of a downside to having VZW are your carrier for a Nexus device.

The best part about the GNex is that it's a Nexus device (unlockable bootloader, etc.).

The LG Spectrum does sound like a very good device though (and the GNex is coming-up on a year old in December).

Cheers!

Wait, are you actually drinking for each post? I don't know what else to think when you say "Cheers!" Other than that, its just a side thought.

I've been getting "download error" for the past few days when trying a manual update. A sign of good things?
Keep an eye on your data connection icon while you check for updates. I had an error for a couple weeks, but it also dark arrows on my data icon in the status bar every time they error came up.

Unfortunately no. Ever notice when you do a check, even if you are on WiFi at the time, it activates the radio and does the check over the tower network? I think this error is an artifact of your service where you are when you do the check and it's loading, not if you are scheduled to get the push and it failing to contact the appropriate server.

How nice it would be if we got some response back other than "Up to Date" or this error message.

I'm always on 4G and have checked manually in multiple locations (presumably on different towers). Even after restarting it's still the same old error.

I'm in wishful thinking mode. :)

Now that jb hit the nexus, I expect ics releases to start showing up. Motorola first, since Google owns them now, will keep Verizon on Google's good side, LG will come after the Motorola phones. Maybe not right after, but after.

And fwiw yes ics was under key features, yes it affected my purchase, and I think the "average American" would interpret "upgradeable to ics" to mean they could but the phone and go home and do the upgrade same day. That is what my father in law and mother in law would think, maybe even my parents too, although my dad might not...

I know it was the whole reason I decided to buy this phone over a nexus phone, "upgradable to ICS," I did not assume it meant that when the phone was originally released it was upgradable. However I bought the phone in August and I did believe the I would be able to do the upgrade upon getting it home. I was surprised that that was not the case, especially since the sales associates at the store said absolutely nothing to me about the problems with the update. This is totally false advertisement. There needs to be more uproar and VZW needs to pay.

Agreed other than the update failures. This phone is the best I've ever had! :)

Finndo77, Hairypiglet and MegaGhostGamer: Remember, their press releases BEFORE the device was even offered for sale had these words: "Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sadwich upgrade available the first half of 2012)".

Wording like: "upgradable" wasn't even used.

But, yes, even with that on a spec sheet, would imply you could upgrade it yourself, and in the context of the press release information available from both LG and VZW, then update information in May, you'd certainly be thinking the upgrade would be available for the device.

Someone wrote over on the LG forums that it has gone through the labs and been certified by VZW.

So, what is holding it back?

If you bought the device in august and saw that press release, it's totally reasonable to believe an ICS update would be forthcoming. That's a solid claim against vz *if* they scrap the update.

I still wonder what's causing the delay... We know lg made a rom and we know they presented it to vz... What happened next remains a mystery and seemingly the root cause of the issue/delay.

i submitted my bbb complaint a few weeks ago. the first time i talked to someone at the executive relations of verizon i was basically told i was sol. After i refused to close my bbb case she called me back today and i got a whole months worth of credits taken off my bill. its not really the answer i was looking for but...hopefully this will speed up the proccess too.

i have also been getting the downloading error when i check for updates
"a download error has occurred for your software update. please try again later

It's "available"... You just can't have it... That's all.:D

Now that was funny. I needed a good laugh. :adore:

Well I can tell ya from my experience with the DroidX VZW is anal about approving their ROMs. It took at least six months worth of leaks before they finally released GB. Hell we had CM7 first with a locked bootloader even. lol

I'm so amused... iPhone sure is hell isn't as open or awesome (imho), and I can't stand how closed the system is (I am spoiled, being able to load apks into the phone itself with aOS), but hot damn if they don't mean business with their software updates.

My mother switched to my plan and we're getting unlimited talk/text with 6gb shared data, and we went with the plain jane iPhone 4 over android os this time, for no other reason that it being free in store when the others for $50+ bucks, and she's a 'plain jane' sort of lady, doesn't care about customization-- I will probably jailbreak it for her though. She's had multiple Android phones and loves LG especially, but she was on Metro and the call quality was iffy (her neighborhood is in a dip; lots of the radio signals jump right over it until she pulls out of the subdivision)

ALSO FUNNY, the Spec is now $50 in store when a couple of months ago it was cheaper :P Anyway, she got her iPhone TODAY and at 7pm she got an upgrade to ios6 :| Less than six hours wait, she bought her phone at 4pm. I've waited for six months for ICS :|

I AM DISAPPOINT.

Yea but that is just because Apple only updates the name of their os every year. I mean has IOS changed at all since the first release? I know they introduced folders on 4. And now they have an extra row of icons. Innovation is really taking off at Apple :-D
