Root PRL / Service Area Issues

I'm not the expert in these forums, but I believe the following is accurate.

The other Sprint PRLs include non-sprint towers they have agreements with (MetroPCS, Verizon, etc) as well as a tiny few Sprint towers reserved for high load areas.

So when you use these Sprint PRLs, you'll get stronger signals and in more places. However, you can't use the non-Sprint towers. The second you try, it'll reject the connection and your phone will try to hop to another tower in the list.

There is another thread on here that went into much detail of how someone played with all the PRL combinations and found that no matter what they did, the Boost phone wouldn't roam unto a non-Sprint tower.

So while some feel like they get a stronger signal with one of the other PRLs, the phone is likely just seeing the signal of another CDMA carrier, but can still only use the actual Sprint towers.

If that be the case why does switching prls not enable you to connect to sprint towers or others? What else do we have to change for it to work, if any on our phones?

The way the phone id's itself, namely the esn and service programming.:D

of course that would also mean a new contract with sprint. so it would be more beneficial to get a better phone at the same time.

lol

The incorrect part is Some towers are not on boost prl for many reasons yet they are perfectly acceptable to connect too.

I think I wasn't clear. Sorry. :o But I was saying that you could access the few extra Sprint towers. But from what I understand, those extra towers are in areas already served by other Sprint towers. I don't think you'll stumble on an excluded Sprint tower out in an area not already covered by another Sprint tower. Clear as mud? :p

Thanks for the assist in clarification. It is sometimes hard to express myself clearly through this mask.

I live in jacksonville, not out in the "sticks" yet changing from stock boost prl to corp sprint prl improved both my signal and my data speed. This was before any real modding to the phone. At the time it was one of the lower numbered shabbymods.
I have since moved and I have stuck with the sprint prl so I can not verify any difference there.
One thing I have read, which may be the explanation for the difference, is that sprint prl gives preference over boost customers.

So true but at least you have GINGERBREAD COOKIES :D:eek::cool:

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I think what I'm seeing listed as Sprint service in that other town is just a roaming agreement with Verizon. What's funny about that is even though it's most likely a Verizon tower covering the area, it wouldn't count as roaming under a Sprint postpaid plan. So if the phone was used almost exclusively in that area, one could have unlimited data using a Verizon tower. Of course, since service in that area is sparse, everyone who lives there has either AT&T or Verizon, so I doubt there are five Sprint customers in that town. Anyways, here

I added this to my build.prop a while ago to see if it worked. To my surprise I was on my way to work and I got some odd screens with a message saying about if I want my phone to roam? The odd thing is I have had that in my build.prop for about 3 weeks and I know there has been few times in those last few weeks when I had no service for a while, so why did I get it today?

I hear you Bro. The Prevail has some hardware limitations, but you can't beat the gurus we got on this forum. Plus, I am naturally cheap and happy with this shrinkage stuff.

What'd ya do to make it work?

I have been a sprint user since 2004 up until 8 months ago. My wife and kids are still on sprint while I am on boost. I only switched because I have a total of 5 lines and for me to get a smart phone was too much to stay with sprint. Now with that being said, I find that with boost I do drop way more calls than I ever did with sprint. I loose service a ton more. I can be in say a store ( local walmart ) and I have 0 service while my wife or kids phone will have 2 to 3 bars - not roaming service either... sprint service. Now there are times when their phones have to roam to maintain service but I would say that even though boost is on sprint towers I feel that boost is limited to the use of all of sprints available towers. Now all of my co workers also use sprint, and we all travel a lot, while out on the road with them we all are salesman and we use our phones a ton. I can be on my boost while they are on their sprint smart phones ( the nexus and evo 3d in particular ) and I will drop a call and they won't.

So I guess In that long drawn out bit I am asking why? I am using prl 61007. is there something different? I am dropping so many calls and having to hold my right leg up while holding my tongue out with my left arm up with the phone just to get one bar while the other sprint smart phones are getting service........ does anyone know maybe? Thanks
