Root Quick INTRO TO ROOTING for those new to rooting

is it posible to root my evo to just have the free tethering? im happy with the way it works i just dont want to pay $30 a month for tethering service.

Any idea how? I would love to do this too as that's the only reason I want to root too. I have the newest build (3.30xx). Thanks.:)

It is defiantly possible. You have a few options...

You can do it without rooting and use and app called PDAnet, which is free for 30 days and then I believe $30 to buy the paid version.

Or

Root your phone and either download wireless tether or flash a rom that has the sprint hot spot feature hacked so you can use it for free.

Okay guys i rooted using the new beta version for 3.70 okay every thing went good an i have the app superuser... okay heres the question what do i do now lmao? any helpful answers would be appreciated, any custom roms or apps i should get anything to make my phone god haha

Not to over-constrain this thread, but it's really for introductions to rooting.

Correct! The purpose of this thread is just to tell you what on earth you are doing by rooting and a basic lexicon of the terminology so people can understand directions. It's really beneficial to anyone who wants to root an android device, not just the Evo. I'm glad I wrote it in this way since a lot of my attention is on the rooted NookColor and that is occupying lots of my limited free time. As I said, this is your primer to get a mental grasp of what is happening when you are rooting, not specific instructions on any specific rooting method...as that constantly changes and shifts with the new software/hardware versions, new rooting apps, and that sort of thing. I am extremely happy that so many people have found this thread useful to make sense of things like "wtf is a nandroid?".

For specific instructions on the EVO, you head to Matlock's most excellent thread here that EarlyMon linked: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies-extras.html. He has done an incredible job.

I appreciate all the thanks I've received here and im just happy to help as so many of ya'll have helped me. Remember, once you rely on the advice of others to know how to root, its a prerogative to help others learn how to unlock the potential of their device! Pay that goodness forward :D

Wanted to thank you for this post. Having all this concise information in one post was helpful. This guide went a long way to educating me on specifics that I wasn't aware of and how it related to android. I still wish I could find more data on what causes bricking aside from interruptions while flashing the device, but this guide and the Dummies Guide helped me A.) feel comfortable, and B.) successfully root my Evo 4G with Sprint yesterday.

Thanks again!

I am purchasing my EVO in a couple of weeks. I LOVE that I can get "bloatware" off my phone and really make it my own. I LOVE that I can activate the WiFi feature without giving Sprint an extra $30. What I don't love is that I can't find anything that tells me the answer to this question:

What ROM (?) or RUU (?) or whatever chain of file names or procedures, let's me keep the phone exactly the way I get it out of the box (Sense UI, basic features) but let's me add the WiFi feature to it?

That's all I want to do! I just want to unlock that feature and maybe add the app that let's me sync iTunes wirelessly. Is there a short version? Can someone post a CLEAR, CONCISE and LAYMAN friendly set of steps that I can follow? I don't want to change the OS or the wallpapers or delve any deeper than that. Can someone PLEASE help me with this?

Thanks in advance,
Thoroughly confused - AndroidSteve

Do you have to flash rooms and kernels together, or can you flash one without running the other. I want to flash mikfroyo and am wondering if rooms and kernels work in tandem with one another. Am I missing out on something if I flash rom only. I have read that kernels deal with performance, but I've also read that rooms increase performance as well. TIA

ROMs always include a kernel, and then you optionally flash a higher-performance or alternative kernel as you wish.

The rom and/or kernel developers will typically state what is compatible with what (usually the kernel devs).

The rom devs typically state what kernel they're using.

Your phone has a few parts:
  • a modified Linux kernel
  • a customized Linux operating system
  • Dalvik Virtual Machine
  • a bunch of system apps
  • a GUI - associated with your launcher; the stock launcher is Sense
  • some really important soft areas called data and the Dalvik cache - this is the working space for the software
    • Add up the above - this is Android
  • a bunch of user apps
    • At this point, add up all of the above, you've got a rom
  • some radio and wimax software - to make it a phone
    • bundled packages sometimes happen of rom+radio+wimax

You'll also find advice from devs and users on updating your radio and wimax software as or if required.

Cabbie please, please, please take out the part where you quote someone that says NOT to backup up your contacts with mybackup pro as you need to back them up to save any contacts you created on your phone. I didn't back up my contacts thinking they'd all be saved in gmail. Almost none of my contacts are saved in gmail and now I'm screwed...

Edit: Not that this is in any way your fault, but I am sure not all users save all their contacts as google instead of phone. Hardly anywhere do guides mention that gmail will only save those contacts and it's a little outside the common sense area unless you have experienced it before (like me now).

First Thanks for this.. truly a helpful guide. Just wondering if you could provide more clarity on point 5. Flashing a new Rom. 1. So before installing cyanogen, I should restore my recovery I made with nandroid , and do a factory reset - Settings >Privacy >Factory Data Reset ? . Is this ok to do while the phone is rooted ? . I haven't actually tried to yet, so these questions might not be good. thanks

A factory reset from Settings is not going to affect your rooted phone in any way. It basically erases all of your user data and starts over like a fresh flash. It is not necessary to do a factory reset from Settings in your app drawer when you flash a new rom. If you haven't already, read through the Rooting for Dummies Guide under After Rooting. It has instructions for flashing Roms/Kernels/Themes. Everything will be wiped through recovery before flashing to ensure that you have a clean slate to start with. There are a couple of flash-able zips that wipe multiple partitions in recovery rather than having to do them manually. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We are here to help.

I read the quick guide to rooting and seen the benefits. The main thing I'm interested in is getting cool apps! Friends of mine have Iphones and they can download movies, music, and games for free as well as a whole host of other stuff. I'm not sure if flashing roms is what does that but I just wanted to know in plain terms if this is even possible.

Most downloads of music, games and music for free involve copyright infringement and software piracy.

Hope your friends don't go for that sort of thing, it's dishonest - and links to it or advocating it are outside of our policies here.

That said, there are a number of sites offering legal movie viewing for free, such as crackle.com, music for free, such as jamendo.com and many games are free in the Market.

Welcome to the forums!

Thanks! I got you! Legal is cool but does that mean that rooting my phone will give me access to cool apps that I can't get unrooted. I've seen old playstation games that were able to be played on a phone with a wii controller. Just an example of what I mean.

The app for that is legal, you just have to watch out for some of the games. ;)

Overall, few apps require root - the ones to wirelessly tether, or take screenshots, or access your phone's service internals.

If it's popular - as most things are - root isn't required.

The thing with an iPhone is that you can only install and use what Apple lets you (and what they make a buck on).

With Android, there's no such restriction.

Thanks very much for takiong time to create this detailed post. Props to you.
n00b to root here, ready to root my new EVO. Anyone know if the data in this post is current?

yeah its still accurate from what I skimmed. Most of us use Titanium backup instead of my back up pro and probably root explorer instead of astro but thats personal preference.

Rooting instructions can be found here

any questions just ask...
