Apparently, it's because the lenses in your eyes never stop growing and as they get bigger, they get harder for the eye muscles to distort in order to change focus.

Yes getting old is ruff! What I found through research is that as you get older, the thickness of the lens shrinks. I finally had the corrective lens restriction removed from my license last year. Ever since being 12 years old I required correction for nearsightedness. Now I have a half frame pair of bifocals. The top part is for viewing the computer monitor. The bottom is for reading. They work quite well. No more headaches due to eyestrain after a few hours staring at the monitor. With the half frame I just look over the top for looking around (distance vision).
