In the UK, the equivalent would be pub band. I used to play in a pub band, and most of the time we had an audience of about 6 people at gigs.
Maybe it was a reflection of our talent, but I enjoyed playing.
Six people works if one of them is a label executive. The Plough & Stars is tiny.

Besides, 3 of those people were the bar staff, and I'm counting the dog as an audience member.
