Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Alright I'm posting this in here because its something nobody cares about or agrees with, so making a new thread would be pointless.

I'm done with pc's and laptops! God dang it seems like they just never want to work! And if they do everything about it just annoys the crap out of me (windows 8)

I got ubuntu running on my new laptop but if its not one problem its the other. I've been looking all around the net for help and it seems like nobody either knows or cares. I have ubuntu working on my old system, had some similar problems got them fixed, but now its like nothing I do will do anything and the payout to get it working will not satisfy me enough.

All I wanted was for my new laptop to run linux. It's running alright, but it honestly seems like my laptop is saying "oh, you wanted to do something with your laptop, that's usually fun interesting and cool? Haha I'm going to break you!" :banghead:

Of course all of this being said I know I'm going to keep trying, but Ive always been a mobile futurist. That mobile platforms, I.e. android, ios, maybe ubuntu phone are the future, and I'm just starting early lol.

Well if you actually wasted your time reading this, I'm surprised. It's just an explosion of crap lol

I have had similar issues with Linux on my machines. I still like it better than anything else, even if i do keep a Win7 partition on each 'puter.
Don't give up! I'm a noob when it comes to Linux, but I always seem to get it figured out. Even if it is a fresh install.

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but maybe you were asking the questions in the wrong venue (or not asking them correctly...).

There are quite a few people here who specialize in Linux (Moody Blues, for example), and if you ask your questions in the Linux thread, we might be able to help you out.

No I understand I'm just frustrated right now lol. I tried asking in ubuntu forums and it seems like nobody knows anything lol

I have 4 boxes, all empty, for the wireless bridges I purchased because they're handy.

After nearly an hour I managed to find one in the back of what amounts to my computer museum.

After another hour or so, I managed to find a proper firmware update so I could log in to my network.

The result of this is that many of the files I want to send around don't have a compatible player on the DLNA client on my TV.

Had I stopped to check that first, I wouldn't have bothered.

On the plus side, I have a working wireless bridge. :p

My music player is supposed to be able to handle multiple formats, including Windows media files and mp3 codecs.

It chokes on Windows media files, and my 150GB music collection is about 60% .wma.

Their suggestion to me-- convert your files to a different format.

Oh, I'm sorry, here I was, assuming that the device you advertised as being able to handle this format would actually do so. Do you have any idea how it will take me to find and re-rip all those freakin' albums?

#why. My school allows us to use Carnegie Online Learning. And Java 7u45 is NOT cooperating with it. And then it also detects Windows 8.1 Build 9600 as Windows NT w/ Kernel 4. NONONONONONONONO.

What device is it?
I would really hate having to re-rip all that...
Around 300 GB of video & audio files on my external HDD. My Galaxy Tab would choke. VLC fixed that. :D

(grumble curse) THREE attempts to download that stupid e-book with 3M Cloud Library have failed, the last one at roughly 99.9%

Only reason I need to even download it to my phone is to check it back in, since it's basically unreadable (graphic novel, roughly bottom 1/3 of each page is cut off in the PC app), and I can't check it back in early from my laptop. Has to be from mobile. I have no idea what drugs were involved in thinking THAT was a good idea.

The world is investing in environmental friendly industries. We are all sooo concerned.
Why is it then that the world wide average use of petroleum per person per day is 1.7 liters, but Americans are still up around 8 liters per person per day?!

Go look at a cell phone coverage map. Those areas that don't have coverage, do have people and tourist attractions.

There is really no reliable public transportation between cities in the Midwest or West.
One bus company tried a commuter line on the front range. Think it's out of business.
You use the Interstate highways, and those highways have high speed limits.

You can take a tour bus to the National Parks and other areas, but who wants to get stuck on a bus with a bunch of old farts? If I go to Arches or Canyonlands or even offroad, I want to sit there and contemplate the rocks since I like Geology. Too many people just take a picture of Balanced Rock in Arches, and rush on to the next thing.
Since tour buses run on schedule, just wanting to sit doesn't work.

Also people out here love the big SUVs and cars. I have a 4WD pickup just to be able to see around these SUVs in traffic. Mine is a 4 cylinder, never have owned anything larger than a 6, and the car I want back had a smaller engine than a lot of today's motorcycles! In fact, the truck gets better mileage than some of the new cars! Our 1996 Infiniti bests most of them except the hybrids. Both vehicles are stick, and the truck doesn't have air conditioning. I like open windows.

Also have stores spread out. Strings of stores, but not every store you want is in the same area, so if you want groceries and hardware, you have to do some driving. Public transportation doesn't deal with this. Some of us don't like supercenters like Wallyworld.

Because Americans are assholes.

That, and because we took over so much terrain, that we have no choice but use big machines to move ourselves from one end of our domain to the other.

If it makes you feel any better, our government is working hard to destroy what integrity is left to the nation.

Then Cuba will have no choice but to invade, to ensure stability of the region.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to get political here. :o

Meh, you didn't say anything wrong.

Either the Mods will let it go, or they'll cut my post and chastise me.

Your point is perfectly valid, and I am living up to my own description. ;)

We don't chastise for that, we just ask that if you're going to talk about politics, do it in the forum reserved for it and leave us to forum organization, suppressing spam and things that are a better use of our time that benefit everyone.

That's not difficult. ;) :)

Is it too late to return the player?

Re the WMAs: you could just run the WMAs through a converter. The processing would take a while, but it would be mostly fire-and-forget.

I'd love to twitch my nose and make the Vulcan cognizant of what the hell he is doing!

.. and you think that would actually make him change ..?

:D

Last time I looked, the only converter I could find to move .wma to .mp3 was called CD-R.

I'm halfway through the process, anyway... and I can make sure I still have physical copies of every album.

Here's another reason why:

Everyone has to have everything RIGHT NOW!!
It turns up here. Someone gets a new phone and the question about the when the next release will be available. They need something new RIGHT NOW.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.
