Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Where did CCTV get him from?...."..nucular..."

News anchors that can't pronounce "nuclear" correctly....that annoys me.

Friends who dump their baby on to the floor then say look for a new screen for me quick. So you hit ebay and amazon real fast just to give them a number to shut em up, find out the price ain't too shabby, call em up to say you found quick cheap resurrection, get told another friend found it cheaper and get scolded for not knowing the same cousin of a friend who had the great deal. To top it off I really hate 2 days later getting a frantic call because other friend took apart old screen and installed new one and now lappy won't start.

Those aren't friends.

you know what grinds my gears? ?? people who stalk "around" you ..as in try to friend or connect or whatever.. people who are in your connections...it's frickin creepy...get a life and stop obsessing about mine...geez....
and the more you beg me to call you....the more I won't..
I HATE talking on the phone...I dont have the time, patience ,the stomach, nor do I want to subject myself willingly to the soul sucking drama and negativity...

ummmmmmmm.....:o:o:o

In the United States, 'nucular' is a Southern-based colloquial term, or word; one only needs to remember George W. Bush, as that was one of his favorites... and, to think that he was born in Connecticut. Sheesh. Like you, mikedt, that word really grinds my gears.

Many people say the same word at my school. I have to deal with it. They say "nucular war" and I say "George W. Bush?".

I don't teach my students "nucular" and I don't expect them to say it either, also I don't teach them upspeak. No thank you W. Bush. No thank you American news anchors on China Central TV. Bet he was rejected by CNN and ended up in Beijing instead.

What passes for colloquialisms do not equate proper diction, speaking, or intelligence. It just depends on where you're from, and how your parents comported themselves in private. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as it were. Be well, mikedt, and may your students get the very best in English from you. People who choose to be talking heads make sure that their diction, as the English would say - is, 'spot on'. Or, they end up in Beijing, as you wrote. :)

Which of course is CNN English, VOA English, BBC English, Queen's English, etc. :D Colloquialisms and dialects have their place I think, on say regional TV news.

Many "talking heads" from the US and UK have ended up in Beijing. They only seem to stay for a few months then move on. IMO CCTV News is really a propaganda and advertising channel, to show that China is a really great place to do business and what a beautiful country China is. That's what much of their programming is about.

When you're driving and you're letting someone go and they don't realize it, or take a while to realize, or insist you go first even though they have the right of way...

When movies go from super quiet to super loud to super quiet and so on...just make it more balanced and let me put down my remote!

Both of your points bother me too; you wish that you had psychic powers for the other driver, and a compressor/limiter for the audio at the movies (chuckle) - LW

When your team is giving a presentation/training, your boss says he's going to sit back and let you and your partner run things, and then proceeds to interrupt every other minute...just stfu I was going to say exactly what you said, but you interrupted me!!! :banghead:

See, that's where I would stop and invite him to finish the lesson.

The one thing I cannot abide is being interrupted when I am trying to give a lesson.

True, but when its the dept. manager its tough...perhaps if he continues my partner and I will have a chat with him

Tearing the house apart looking for an item, buying another 'cause you can't find it, then finding the original item 2 days later.

I've done that. When you find the original item, you pray that the new item isn't scratched or damaged; grabbing the receipt, and flying back to Honest Harold's Smartphone Emporium, or wherever. It's called being human.
