Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Today was my son's birthday; since I divorced his mother in 2008, we haven't been cozy; not for my lack of trying, however. That, and being without my wife-to-be, really grinds my gears. In a sad way.

The Canadians are still provoking us...

Went to Canada back in my younger days, just before the Molson, LaBatts and Moosehead breweries started exporting their beer to the United States. Went to a place called Bo Peeps in Toronto, and got indoctrinated with Canadian beer. My chin went numb after two ales. Diabetes and alcohol don't mix very well, but, Canadian beer back then was much stronger than Bud or Miller. Up she goes, then, down... be well, everyone. :)

I drank LaBatts Ice beer for a while. I no more got onto drinking it when they quit allowing it's sale in Kansas. :( We have Blue.. but no longer do we have Ice. Grrrrr
It forced me to turn to Shiner Bock and we have both lived happily ever after.

I haven't drank in years. However, due to my Italian ancestry, I had a weakness for Galliano; my diabetes, however, never got along with alcohol. I would do something really stupid, as my body's interaction with alcohol would produce spikes and crashes, and I would be an out-of-control idiot. Now, I have a therapist, a psychiatrist, and a pain-management specialist that have me on a 'cocktail' that gets me through most days. That's what grinds my gears; I'm so mentally weak, and with my fianc

I really hate when Windows likes to do an unscheduled disk check. Takes forever.

I hate it when Windows boots up, I hate it when Windows is running, and I really hate the security breach known as Internet Exploder; er, I mean, Explorer... give me Mac, Ubuntu, or Linux. I loved Mac unreservedly all the way up to OS 9.3; yet, when they introduced the quartz look and feel of OS X, you still had the ability to use the Mac the way YOU wanted to use it, instead of having a directory designed to try and control YOU, and the way you chose to store things. Even on the Windows 8 laptop that my wife-to-be and I share, you won't find anything from Open Office stored in Documents, nor will you find any photos in Photos. What a waste of a directory - that, in truth, really grinds my gears. Windows itself. Mm-

I do have a copy of OS X and Ubuntu, giving a nice and satisfactory triple boot. I have to boot into Windows, its not actually my choice sadly. The boss wants some stuff and she won't take it unless it was made in M$ Office, stupidly. I boot into OS X and Ubuntu more often :)

Mine doesn't take that long. Takes longer to boot into Kubuntu. The 2 XP boxes have no internet connection, so don't need security, and have turned off every damn service I can on the 7 Pro laptop. I bought my own security. It is a bummer you can't get rid of the folders, but I've told Windows where to download and ignore them. I don't think I even know what IE looks like now. Haven't used the POS since 4. I do see it (5) on the offline boxes to read html docs. The offliners run legacy and Photoshop.

To be fair, it looks like that CHKDSK was seriously overdue

Re Windows: I'm now on Win7 on my work desktop and at home laptop and .. it's fine. Don't have any real issues with it at all. Sure, before Win2K / NT, Windows was utter pants but since then - say for the last 14 years or so - it's been perfectly adequate.

funny...I installed windows on my MacBook Pro way back when;) used to toggle back and forth because I was finding it hard to get used to OS X....NOW I think it would drive my loon tune to use windows:rolleyes:

Windows 7 was the last decent OS for PC computers. Now, Windows 8 is cross-pollenated across platforms, and marketed in Microsoft's own inimitable way. Users are in chains. Mac's the same way, but, you know up front, and they aren't as sinister about collecting your data compared to Microsoft, in example, Internet Explorer. No one out there can make me into a pro-Microsoft guy; I've used Windows since 3.1, Mac since the beginning (the first computer I used was an Apple). The difference is easy - I was forced to use Windows because it had more of the marketshare, and Mac was relegated to educational institutions. Now, Mac has a healthier marketshare, thanks to the Intel switch and the iPhone. Yet, Android rules the smartphone marketshare - that's why I'm here. :)

Also, while on the topic of computers, the music software I use is Windows Only ;w; I can't be bothered to use VMWare Workstation to emulate Windows XP. It'll run slow, OS X chomps up the 2 GB of RAM like candy. Maybe I can run it in Wine for Linux.

I got 7 Pro just to run Illustrator. Adobe buggered the CS2 series and you have to jump through hoops to get it to work. I found a copy of Illustrator 9 that needs XP, so I use 7 Pro to run it. I've been playing with the Linux music software. I just buy and redo CDs.
I have a USB port in the CD player in the truck.

Here here! I agree! The only reason I have Windows at all is Rift! When I'm not beating down planar invasions in Telara, I'm booted into Slackware which has been my preferred distro since the mid nineties.

I hate when I'm in between shirt sizes. First it was Medium was getting a little too tight, but Large was too big, then Large was too small and Xtra Large was too big, and NOW it's XL is too small, and XXL is way too big.

Durn fluffy-tummy.

Ah, the new age of Mac... they're still using RAMDisk - only now, it gobbles the RAM... some things'll never change. Who here believes that Android will wear computer pants? Lenovo has a laptop around $400 that runs 4.2.2. Any takers?

Friends who dump their baby on to the floor then say look for a new screen for me quick. So you hit ebay and amazon real fast just to give them a number to shut em up, find out the price ain't too shabby, call em up to say you found quick cheap resurrection, get told another friend found it cheaper and get scolded for not knowing the same cousin of a friend who had the great deal. To top it off I really hate 2 days later getting a frantic call because other friend took apart old screen and installed new one and now lappy won't start.

Never had luck with WINE. Didn't try to run Adobe, but WordPerfect. I have WP9, it doesn't need IE to run - it came with Netscape. You can thoroughly customize it. What is funny - Corel had a WP for Linux at the time for sale.
