Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Well that sux!

Where's the Freedom of Speech? [emoji47]
According to the US Supreme Court, it doesn't exist if you want to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater.

According to most moms and dads, it doesn't exist at the dinner table - some words and subjects are taboo.

And it doesn't exist at privately owned forums where the owners and admins set posting rules, as is their right, to protect the members.

And at no time are any laws or rights violated. :)

Their house, their rules, break them and you may be asked to leave.

Just like your house. ;)

What he said.

While it sucks being banned from a forum where I have a bunch of friends, I respect the right of the forum's owners to decide who can participate in their forum and what behavior is tolerated.

Also, while there wasn't any profanity in my post, the things I said about Ventura weren't things I would have said with my mother in the room.

Unless it's extreme behavior, like racism, etc etc, we're pretty mellow about unbanning people if we can have a simple meeting of the minds over the rules.

Write admin there, admit what line of theirs you crossed, promise to not do it again. And don't. :D

Contrary to popular belief, mods don't get off on banning people and admin knows that.

Mods at better sites have rules - you do X, they do Y.

A big deal for you is forgotten in 5 minutes by the mods. Usually it's like serving burgers - you give people what they ordered and say, "Next!" :D

Speech may be controlled in this thread, and others in 'da forums' - like EarlyMon wrote, house rules can override Amendment #1 in the United States Constitution... follow the rules, and everything's peachy.

What is good about this thread is that when rants are written responsibly, relevant concerns shared by many can be addressed. Without straying into politics and current affairs (very 'hot' news stories, that can be offensive to some members).

I enjoyed the recent subjects covered by mikedt and I, as the subject continued forward with more participants.

That makes me feel that people like mikedt and I - even though we're from different geographic locations - share a common belief system, that even younger members agree with - who, in turn, are also from different locations on the map.

Things like this give me hope that a real world community may be achieved. When my parents taught me the credo "...treat people the way that you want to be treated...", it is demonstrated here, in this thread, regularly.

I'm grateful that people from different generations seem to be able to communicate here, as well. The common denominator comes from the fact that most of us are Android users, smartphone and tablets, alike.

We have one user in this thread who uses an iPhone - as a Mac aficionado, I like the fact that this individual participates here, too.

In this scenario, we all benefit; and, that - in itself - makes me want to continue coming back.

We all win - LW :)

Jesse who? I had to look that one up in the Wikipedia. :D

James George Janos, b. 7-15-1951, made a name for himself in the original WWF (the anagram for "World's Wealthiest Fakers") as 'wrestler' Jesse Ventura; then, later in politics (mikedt, I already know that you're fully informed about Mr. Ventura).

His recent television series about conspiracy theories keeps him on the map, and for him to go from wrestling, to State-level politics, and get TV tenure about conspiracies - well, my hat's off to him. Is it true that he served in the US Armed Forces as a Navy Seal team member? LW

ahhhh...the younger day;s! reminds me I had a stamp of my signiture etc,,,for year book siging in MS - HS!!!! hahahah it was meant to be funny:)

Now I've heard, and seen it all.

No offense, ladies, but when a company that produces non-FDA approved products for ladies dealing with the effects of menopause; i.e., 'hot flashes', lethargy, weight gain... why would they have to borrow a name from a well-known Broadway theatrical excursion that started in the '90s for a female audience, in order to market their product on a television commercial, calling it "Menopausal Monologues"?

Ridiculous! Especially when you're waking up to your first cuppa Joe, and the dogs are still asleep. Man, oh man...

I know they do it with products for men, like "Just For Men - Champions Of Facial Hair!", for the guys who create 'Sports Widows'...

Or, they get some really good-looking woman with a set of speaking pipes like the late Lauren Bacall, saying that "four out of ten men over the age of 40 will experience erectile dysfunction, and *insert product here* can help men maintain blah-blah-BS-blah..."

It was just too early for that warm, brown stuff. My early morning rant, for your perusal.

When I was a kid, I thought that menopause was actually spelled 'minnow pause', which explained why some of the fish in our bubbly tank stopped swimming in mid-water. I remembered saying to my Mom, pointing at the fish tank: "Look, Ma - 'minnow pause!'"

Now I know know why she shook her head, rolled her eyes, and went to get another cup of coffee.

It was probably too early for her to deal with her seven-year-old, eldest son making that announcement... LW

@LOveWerks

That's why there's a mute on the remote, and I "watch" TV while doing something else so I can ignore. What will get my attention is the music on a commercial. Someone is using "Walk of Life" so I checked it. I had a cat named that. (Also had one called "Skateaway, that's all" ) The vet loves me since no cat has ever had a really common name.

I'm usually on the computer, reading a book, or quilting. I have a DVDR in the sewing room. I record baseball and football OTA, and can "watch" (listen to) while doing projects. All have instant replay, so I don't miss much. As long as I can see whatever is on, I'm happy. Doesn't have to be the newest TV since I won't change my habits and the tech is wasted on me.
BTW - I can FF through the ads, or take them out when converting from VOB to MP4. My use only. I can play on Roku or old Acer A500. They don't play DVDs.

When I was around six or seven years of age, my late Great Uncle Tony was a busy guy - he'd open his pharmacy early in the morning; then, when his daytime pharmacist came in, he' d grab my younger brother and I, and take us to his tavern named after my second cousin, 'Guy's Place' - on Boylston Street, just as you hit Boston.

One morning at the pharmacy, he asked me to climb a ladder in the stockroom, to get a huge box down for him, that was strangely light in weight.

The box had a logo on it, that read Modess - Regular Flow.

Feminine napkins. I was young, so, my brother and I thought that they were special napkins - made for ladies.

When Hal, his daytime pharmacist came in, Hal said something about my Great Uncle using child labor, and they both laughed.

I then asked what was in the boxes I had brought down on the ladder, and my Great Uncle quipped:

"Manhole covers!"

Being as young as we were, we didn't know what meant, because the manhole covers in the street looked quite heavy, when we saw men who worked for the Department of Public Works use a tool to pry them up.

Innocence. True story. LW

You should see how uncomfortable and irritated my dad gets whenever a tampon/pad commercial comes on.

It should be like toilet paper. You know it exists, go buy it.

But of course P&G, Unilever, et-al, want you to be buying their brands of toilet paper, tampons, etc. and not other brands. So they spend millions on TV ads, to try and entice you to.

I never did pay much attention to WWF or WWE or whatever they call it these days. Now Mongolian school girls wrestling, that's more interesting.

I see they still do Raw and Smack Down. I had a couple of friends in the UK who were into it.

WWE "China"

mikedt, that kind of wrestling is purely for the soap-opera entertainment it provides. These guys work out in the gym to get the 'look', then, practice choreographed moves that are more 'grandstanding' than real, Greco-Roman style wrestling... while Vince McMahon's writers create plots that include rivalries between the participating wrestlers, alliances, and plenty of female entertainment...

It's all BS.

Over here in the States, WWE's demographic consists of people who aren't of the very sentient variety... plenty of guys with mullet haircuts, and, women who like loud, boisterous men with muscular bodies.

Which is what WWE provides...

I'd rather sit through sub-titled European "B-rolls", than subject myself to that kind of entertainment. Too brash, too loud, too... fake.

Last night, I watched a 2014 film called "Gone Girl", with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in the lead roles.

Totally engrossing, downright shocking, and worth the $4.99 spent on Video On Demand.

I wouldn't watch WWE "Raw", or "Smackdown" if someone paid me. That's my nickel. Give me romantic comedies, and a thriller every once in awhile... LW ;)

There used to be wrestling popular on British TV in the 70s and 80s, Saturday afternoons. But most of those wrestlers seemed to be over 50s or chronically overweight.

Apparently British professional wrestling was all BS and pre-rehearsed. It sounds like their target demographic was the same as WWE.

Mongolians actually take their form of wrestling very seriously. It's one of the "three manly skills", along with horsemanship and archery.

The students do wrestling at the school I teach at, boys and girls.

I agree, WWE is trashy as hell. I had a roommate in college that liked it, and I watched an episode with him....the drama was so cheesy and fake...I can't believe anybody enjoys it.

Now...romcoms, I'm not a big fan of. I'll watch the occasional one if I'm watching it with somebody, but when I'm picking my films, I generally go with a good action movie. Movies from the 80's are the best here, but I do enjoy modern stuff too. Just rewatched Die Hard with a Vengeance the other night. I can't get enough of that stuff.

Film franchises like the Taken series, and other action films (Jason Statham) are cool with me.

However, I have to disagree with the 1980s action films:

There were too many of them. Between Scharzeneggar, Stallone, Norris, Van Damme and others - it was just too much. It did, however, reflect upon Cold War and Vietnam sentiments.

I graduated high school in '79, and college in '83 - I grew up as a kid watching Vietnam news coverage, Watergate, and maybe you can understand why I wasn't into those films.

I was already full. Yet, being a lover and not a fighter - and, of Italian descent - I love romantic comedies - and, so did the girls I dated... which, were many. :) LW
