Reasons the Droid X is a great tool for a College Student

An X as a chick magnet?

Unless you get a dumb girl who is entertained by flashy big phones, i dont think the X is a chick magnet

I am starting my sophomore year as well :)
and all the reasons everyone(aside from the chick magnet) are all good ideas and reasons

Personally, it boils down to it...compromise...pay for the phone and the data package and meet them halfway

Agreed! It's going to be extremely rare that a girl will come up to you and say "Wow, you have a really big... phone." The real chick magnets are dogs. I get so many unwanted attention from girls just by walking my darling little beagle with her sparkling collar. :p I come back and tell my straight male roommate and he's all like "WTF. Let me walk her."

As a graduate student I can't tell you how many times I've gotten an e-mail on my way out the door or in the car saying that a class has been rescheduled. Its not the end of the world to go into class and find out, but I've really appreciated knowing ahead of time and being able to change plans accordingly.

1. Email. Getting it right away is awesome
2. Internet. I remember reading about the NBA trade deadline rumors when I should have been learning about topology. Good stuff. Also, you can share videos or stuff on the internet with your friends pretty much anywhere.
2a. If you're off campus without wifi it's awesome to have a 3G connection. Makes it easy to look up bus schedules, check up prices for shopping, look for restaurants in the area, etc.
2b. When you're piss drunk without your laptop miles away from campus, hopefully you can still look up the number for a cab see if there's an incoming bus. Hopefully.
3. GPS. Google maps would be awesome for exploring around the city. My blackberry got fried and navigating through Boston and NY just wasn't the same. My school also has Zipcar (rental cars) and having a GPS is really helpful for daytrips and such.

I always need to have a Smartphone in college, an X would just be the best available.

1. Keep up to date schedule.
2. Reminders for important assignments/projects.
3. Emails from teachers and students.
4. Researching information if no access to a computer, or if the internet is down at your dorm. (Happens quite frequently).
5. Online access to classes. (All of my classes have a online blackboard).
6. Checking bank accounts by text or via web.
7. Ability to take pictures to study things outside of class.
8. Emergency access to traffic, weather etc.
9. Ability to have important files on your smartphone, and review papers on word, powerpoint etc.
10. Flashcards on your smartphone... (my favorite).

I really could go on. I use mine for EVERYTHING.

Don't forget such things as Remote Desktop, Voice Recording for recording class notes. etc.

It's only 'just' a phone if that's the way you use it. It can be a lot more than that.

I wouldn't consider myself a tech "geek" but I do like to try and keep up some what with the newer technologies.

I honestly think that it will be beneficial to me. I will be more apt to use my planner and calendar if it isn't something extra I have to carry (I used my paper planner last year for about a week). There are several apps that are also beneficial to studying. Having access to my e-mail at all times also will help because we get EVERYTHING e-mailed to us at school.

If I got this I would also be able to role my iPod, TomTom, day planner and phone into one.

But I am prepared to pay for the data plan and or phone if it comes down to that!

Those, in my opinion, are all good options. Try telling your parent all of that. Go ahead and offer to pay for the data plan up front now (at least the first month). See how that goes.

Best of luck!!!

Small smartphone distraction...or beer, unprotected sex, LSD and weed?

Well the thing is you end up doing all of those things no matter what. Trust me.

Furthermore, one follows from the other (starting with beer anyway).

it gets your email so if you are out and class gets canceled or something it will save you the time from going the whole way to class.
Google nav to help you get wherever you are going so you are always on time lol. You can use the calender to have all your assignments and everything saved and with you at all time so if you ever are out and arent exactly sure about when a test or homework is due you can look right there.

gets out the bag and always bothers the cutest ones

Tell them the larger screen is needed for reading digital school books that you can download for a lot less money and you can carry an unlimited number of books in the phone.

or
Get any phone with a data plan just before you leave then exchange it for a Droid X at a Verizon store after you get to school.

I have two engineering friends that never had a smartphone and they are doing fine. Granted, they are always next to people who do have smartphones so if class is canceled or whatever, then they will know about it too.

I got through college without a smartphone and was fine without one.

However, I would say that if you are moving to a new area, a smartphone with navigation, maps, yelp, etc. would be indispensable.

I moved from the west coast to the east coast for grad school, and was completely unfamiliar with the area. I cannot even begin to count how many times my iphone 3gs (yelp, maps, etc.) has either saved me, helped me, or just made my commute/living more comfortable.

If you are driving, you can tell them that you will be getting a navigation system as well, which will make things not only more convenient, but probably safer as well (i.e. you won't get lost and be wandering in shady neighborhoods).

For school itself, I've put my lectures on my iphone 3gs and i listen to them during commutes on the metro or when I am just walking around. That has saved a lot of time. I'm not familiar with how the droid handles music/audiobooks, but i'd imagine it would be as good if not better.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! A lot of you gave me some great ideas to use, and I hope to become a member of the Droid X crew! haha :D

It's not useful at all.
College is not that hard that you need tools to help you.
If you tell your parents otherwise, then you are lying to them.
Make your own money and buy it.
Kids are so spoiled these days.

Wow, way to be overly judgemental. Obviously you haven't been to school in the past 20 years. Laptops and cellphones are essential for college and combining them would be great. Granted it's not needed but it does come in handy a lot. And yes the OP should buy his own phone and plan. Like I do with every phone I've ever owned. Negative comments don't belong on this board. Either be constructive with your criticism or please don't say anything at all. Thanks. :)

I guess I came off a little strong, I apologize.
I am simply saying that he should be honest with his parents. I have a smartphone because my company pays for and my job almost requires it.
FYI, I graduated from a university in May of 2009, so yeah I haven't been to school in past 20 years. I was barely 2 years old 20 years ago.
Good day to you.

I am being honest with my parents, and I am lucky enough to have parents who pay for a lot of what I have. I go to a very rigorous school and they know that. They know it will be a handy thing to have, but also believe it could very well be an added distraction. My goal is to convince them that I will use it towards my education and it won't be an added distraction.

I say good for you. I was goingto get the droid x but decided to wait for a bit. If you worked something out with your folks then go for it. Is it necessary, no, helpful, yes. I'm a junior in college and realize it would be so helpful since over half the time the wifi is down on my campus. So I'll be upgrading soon just not right now.

Thank you! I know, and they know it isn't a NEED but they have so many helpful things on them that don't come with regular phones.

I have not made up my mind 100% about a phone, I just know that I prefer Android devices to Blackberry and Windows. If I had to pick a phone without touching it, it would be the X, but I want to use all 3 before I buy one.

Good Luck to you in school and getting a new phone!

Im waiting because there is another phone I've heard of off in the horizon that sounds better and plus since I'm waiting til I have everything in hand. For me I'm waiting til I have everything in hand for my parents so it's paid in full and upfront. I feel like it if I can pay something I want off in one go then I will.
