Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

ohh, ok, so all the files and contents im seeing in that drive path IS the SD card contents, so i need to move the 2 zip files, unzipped, to the drive path, or SD card?

Yes, correct, you only see the sd card contents ;)

and just drag the unzipped files to the card...not sure what you mean by "drive path", sorry.

sorry, Drive path is the specified Drive letter, or "path", that the Drive will be accessible with, for instance, my Disk Drive Path for my phone is H:

ive moved the 2 zip files to my SD card now, whats next?

Gotcha...now what I like to do, instead of just unplugging the device, is to safely remove the device. As in unmount it, or use the option on the computer to remove the device.

After you remove the device, then boot into your recovery.
I think you have done that before in the rooting procedure correct?
If not, I can tell you how....

i do know how, im there

o.k...cool.
The first thing before flashing anything from now on is to make a backup in recovery.
The backup, called nandroid backup, is a snapshot of your phone's current state...just like a computer restore point or a game save. If anything goes wonky with flashing or a new rom, you can restore that backup to get you back running again.
Now, in Amon ra, if I remember correctly, there should be an option to backup??

not sure if im at the exact screen i need to be in, right now, im seeing the red triangle from selecting the recovery option, and after clicking the Volume up, down, and power buttin, im seeing a blue text that says Android System Recovery, my options are:

Reboot system now
Apply update from sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition

where do i go from here?
and sorry for all the trouble on this Dx

Ah, I see...you still have the stock recovery....
No worries, lets go back to step 2 of the guide we are in to install the recovery....

step 2 How to get Recovery

Do you remember doing that step?

hmmm...odd...what method of install did you use?
Amon Recovery screen should look like this...
6a00d83451c9ec69e2014e864068e2970d-pi.jpg

I used the fastboot method

:hmmmm2:
And it completed with no errors?
Odd....well, still no worries, lets run that install for recovery again..it won't hurt, trust me. I just find it odd that it didn't install.
I know you said you were unlocked, s-on and such...it should have worked..

Edit: oops...just saw your edit.....cool!! disregard this post lol :)

okay, now, when i tried to do the nandroid backup, i received an error message -___- it says Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!

What options did you select to backup? You need not select the "sd-ext"...it will fail if you chose that.
Also, what size sd card do you have?

i have an 8GB SD card, i freed up some space on it, lots of family videos and various Office Documents, and im running the backup right now, i have yet to get an error message now :D but the backup is still running

Update: Backup completed, getting ready to try out the next steps

yes!!!! it worked!!!! thank you so, so SO much for helping me understand everything, youve been such an awesome help :)

Suh-weet!! And your welcome, that's why we are here ;)

Now, one more quick word of advice, keep a copy of your nandroid on your computer too....just--in--case :)

Edit: oh, and by the way, if you ever decide to partition your sd card, then you can use the "sd-ext" backup option. But that's another discussion ;)

what do i need to do in order to back it up to my computer? sounds like a great "just in case" idea

On your sd card, I believe you will see a folder called, "nandroid" ? Geez, it's been a little while, I can't quite remember. :p Now you got me thinkin'.....

But you can just plug your phone into the computer, and copy it to your desktop, or a special folder for it, or whatever.

Yes,Mikey the folder is called nandroid and it will contain all the backups made on that phone. It's like riding a bicycle you can't forget :)

thanks biker:D
Not to derail the thread or anything, but are you still rockin' that awesome device?

You can report this derailed thread to the mods and they can deal with it accordingly

Yes, I've still using the evo as my daily phone :D. Every time I start thinking about getting a new phone I find another rom to flash.

I've been really busy with work, but sould be back on here like before really soon!

Is this site current? I have an EVO 4g I'd like to root and hopefully install ICS or even Jelly Bean in the event that is possible.

The very first post shows links needing to be downloaded but the first three links are dead so I can't get the files. 1- adb.exe 2- fastboot.ext 3- AdbWinApi.dll

Can anyone offer help?

Thanks!
