Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

This is my second android that I'm trying to root and my first HTC. I get to flashing the unlock.bin file and I get a response of signature verify fail. Or something like that. Any ideas? What should I do?

No, you need not be connected to the internet when running that command. ;)

Just to verify, did you move the .bin file to your folder with all the other files in it (the ones you needed at the beginning of the unlock/root process), and are opening the command prompt from that folder? ("Android" folder--if you named it that)
Are you in fastboot, and the screen says "fastboot-usb"?
:)

Hmmm, again :(
You have the Evo 4G correct?
At this point, I think I am stumped by that error you are getting.
Let me think about this some more, and perhaps see if I can find someone who would know better than I do :)

Edit: are you entering the command exactly as shown?:

Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

Yes thanks for your help.
When I get back home I can try it again and play around a bit see what happens

Update: I opened the bin file with a html viewer and I get the mobile Google accounts sign in page! ROFL
I re-downloaded the file and now I get a bunch of incomprehensible squiggles and stuff so I'm hoping now it will work when I try it again when I get home. I really hope this was the issue

haha, yeah, I'm sure you are on the right track now :D
I'll check back in later!!

I would try the MikG rom first!
Just be sure to make a nandroid backup before flashing stuff!
That backup will be your best friend if something goes wonky:)

Once you get the hang of flashing, there are alot of roms available...
Check out The List :)

By the way, NICE JOB at your successful rooting!

Thanks for the moral support.
I still wonder how it happened that the bin file was messed up.
Does MikG have a2sd baked in or wouldbi need to set it up?
What about kernels?

I think MigG has a cm based a2sd baked into it...it's been a while but I think it does.

Kernels? If you want to change them, just be sure the kernel is made for the device (obviously) and for the rom. I ran Anthrax whilst on MikG.

you are more then welcome.........keep the questions coming if you have them.

Thanks and I do.
When I rooted all my data was wiped from the phone, was that supposed to happen?
I see the EVO being referred to as the OG EVO , whats OG?
TIA and I'm really glad I found an active and welcoming EVO community here .:)

ok so yes the HTCdev method will delete data unfortunately.....nothing you can about it now.....anyways.

as far as og goes......well it is sort of a long story.....i started calling it og evo when i saw this thread:http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d...o-g-evo-in-lieu-impending-release-evo-3d.html

for me it means original evo, but you can make to mean whatever you want......LOL

well it is not nearly as active as it used to be.....there are still some veterans who still hang out here and answer posts when there is one.

back in the day this forum used to crack out the threads like no other forum in AF. you post one thread and just like that it gets buried with other threads........you should have seen this place when gingerbread dropped for the phone......now that was an active forum!!!!!!

Another question I have is that in recovery by the nandroid backups, the last 2 options have something to do with backing up google something or another. What is that ?

what recovery do you have? i would do the first three that is checked(sysytem, data and cache) and that is it.....unless you have your sd card partitioned then you need to do sd-ext as well......the others i would not do as they are not necessary.

This def more active than other forums I tried . At least here the veterans give answers! Nice guys!

Back then I was still clinging to my Palm Centro lol. I only made the switch to android about a year and a half ago

I have the one in the guide, ra something I think.
Im talking about where you choose to do nandroid backup, the next option is nandroid restore . The next 2 is google something I can check it up exactly if you need.

LOL before i got the htc evo.....i almost got the palm pre.....i'm so glad i did not make that mistake:)

i'm still amazed though that folks still have this phone. the og evo was and still is a beast considering how technology has advanced since it first came out.

i still use mine as an mp3 player....not sure if i will ever part with it as it was my first android phone that i rooted....my first android phone was the htc hero.
