Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

My sisters evo running classic has something called 3g Hacked Hotspot vs the one that I have Sprint Hotspot. It's the same app except hers works. Would there be a way to get that onto my phone? Do I just need to grab the apk?

Devices will not connect with it?
I don't think it has to do with your plan having tethering or not, but did it work before? Or did it not work from the first flash of the rom?
I haven't really gotten into troubleshooting the tethering aspect of any device of mine as I never use it :)
However, perhaps a clearing of the cache and dalvik cache from with recovery may help?

Right.
If it doesn't have to do with the plan, how would they know to charge me for it?
I only tried it after I rooted and put on Mikg. So far I'm using an app called Wifi Tether and that works fine, it's the sprint app that don't work.
What would clearing cache and dalvik cache do to the phone?

You just need to be careful when tethering.
It still uses data. Use too much of it and Sprint raises their eyebrows.

Clearing the cache and dalvik cache, for lack of better explanation, lets all the apps rebuild fresh and some other things. It is not a bad thing to do. :)
It's helps to fix things that act wonky too:)

Well, I kinda suck at explaining things that I don't know how they work, so the best thing I can do it link this that explains Dalvik Cache: :o
What is Dalvik Cache? | ShahZ

And cache:
Cache in general is a type of temporary and quick access data used by apps. Any temporary information created or used by an app is part of cache.

In general, cache shouldn't cause problems, but occasionally it can become corrupted and cause an app to misbehave.

Clearing the cache, you force the app to recreate any information it had previously stored in cache, which can slow down the app until the information is recreated.

So reading around the forums I see lots of love for the decks reloaded Rom, especially from you Mikestony. Can you tell me more about it? I don't like comparing roms to one another as that is entirely unfair, rather I like to know the + & - of each one in order to make an informed decision. After having Mikg for a short while I feel like I know it pretty well.

Well, granted I did not flash alot of roms back then (still don't :p) and Decks was probably the 3rd and last rom I ran.
However, when I ran Decks, I felt like the device was snappier, quicker. :) Probably due to its smaller memory footprint.
Decks, in conjunction with the kernel that is included, was very customizable as far as tweaking everything you could think of. (governers/schedulers/over and underclocking/dark tremors a2sd/dalvik cache on sd/and the list goes on)

I found alot more themes are available with an AOSP rom such as Decks.

If you are wondering what I mean by "AOSP", check out post 2 here. :)

Also with Decks, you can control the voltage assigned to different clock speeds. (under or overvolting)..more on that later. :)

I even ran some custom Scripts by PapaSmurf (a dev over on XDA)...just another tweak for Decks.

As far as any negatives...imo...there are none :D Haha, I'm a little biased eh? And that's just because it's the only AOSP rom I ran.

There are alot of other AOSP roms out there that I hear are very nice too, but I have not personally tried.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Mikg....so much so, that I was hesitant to flash another rom...but after reading about Decks and checking out others' thoughts, I finally flashed it.

Be sure to make a nandroid backup before any flash:)

Edit: I guess I am more of a rom tweaker than a rom flasher. :)

I never heard of that! More on that?

I've heard of Papa from reading about the Rom. What kind of scripts?

Themes change the overall look as far as colors for your device...installed with the Theme Chooser app included in Decks.
See this for themes and how they look:
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=aosp themes&c=apps&hl=en

Over or Undervolting can help or hurt battery life. Each clocked speed has a certain upper and lower threshhold for voltages. You can change each of those thresh holds.
I used a script called Vipermod to do that:
See this for more info because I'm lame at explaining things ;) :
[MOD]viperMOD for AOSP Kernels - v3 beta RC2.4 |Updated 6.14.11| *App in Progress!* - xda-developers
(honestly, I really never messed with it ....just once, and that was all)

Here is a great write up and the homepage for Papa's script:
[SCRIPT/TWEAKS] [LOTK] Smurfed Out V 6.6 (ultimate build.prop/init.d) 4-21 - xda-developers
Scripts I guess change alot of different things within your build.prop at once instead of manually changing them all. The build.prop is the place where alot of your phone's info is kept and read from. I wish I could explain it better :(
More on build.prop:
[GUIDE] How to edit build.prop on any Android device! - xda-developers

As far as Gapps, I would use the one posted and then let the apps update if needed...no worries:)

It took me quite a while and ALOT of reading and researching to find stuff like this and more.
Just be patient and don't try to take it all in at once...you'll go nutty, trust me :)
Baby steps. ;)

Also, before trying anything, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!!!---I can't stress that enough! If something doesn't act right after a flash, then at least you have a backup!
And if you are not sure on something, just ask! We love to help the best we can:)

Here is an awesome collection of info that Ocnbrze put together for more reading:

More on kernels too:

I know, alot of reading eh?

OK my head is swimming haha. I read through all the links you provided (obviously not throughly). So seems like I'm gonna have to take this real slow, baby steps as you said.
I'm not a complete noob in this but still most definitely a noob. On my old phone and first Android (Samsung replenish) I rooted, installed a custom Rom (just a debloated stock) and kernel and had link2sd and no frills cpu. I then even had to edit the build.prop to stop the phone asking me to do the OTA.
The more I read the better deck's reloaded is sounding so I think in gonna take the plunge one of these days (gotta build some courage first:D). I don't think I'm gonna go straight into tweaking with mods and scripts just yet.... Baby steps :o
Thanks for providing the link to Ocrnbzre's bookmarks, they are an amazing resource.

the best thing to do is ask questions when you have them....its the only way you are going to learn.

and always make a nandroid backup when you are going to be tweaking or flashing......nandroid backups are your friend. they have saved my phone many times over. i also would keep your first nandroid backup someplace safe on your computer or in the cloud....you never know when you will need it......i have mine some where on my pc, external hard drive and on the cloud.

ok so i have S-ONa nd Cyanogen mod that i need put back to stock.. I followed all the steps and it seemed to not work on the second command promt. When i do "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image" it says "no such file or directory". The other two steps seem to work fine. well i moved on from there and copied the PC36IMG to my root and it seemed to work when i turnthe device back on, but when the blue bar fills up i get a notice saying"no image or no file" (something like that, its really fast) on the phone. If i restart Cyanogen mod is still on the phone. This is for an Evo 4g BTW. Thanks for any help.

You need to flash back to a Sense-based stock ROM for these steps to work, preferably one on an older base (like 4.67).

I want to upgrade my SD card to a class 10 card, I currently have a class 4. These are the steps I think I should do
1) nandroid backup the sd-ext
2) transfer all my files (on fat partition) to pc.
3) restore old SD card to original = partition old SD card so fat is on whole card again. (should I do swap 0?)
4)insert new card and partition.
5) transfer back the files on pc using USB toggle
6) restore nandroid sd-ext.

Does this make sense or should I rather uninstall a2sd (put apps back into phone memory) and then re-install a2sd on new card?
