Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

i'm newly registered to the forum, i've browsed it quite a bit but decided to post my first question and say hi and thanks to everyone for their effort and knowledge.

so hi and thanks everyone!

ill spare you the long story and get right down to it, all that i want to do with my phone is to tether some wifi to my tablet pc and maybe remove some bloatware. im used to the feel of the stock ui and was curious if i could get a little advice on which would be the best method, and which rom has the most similar feel/stability.

thanks in advance for your time

Welcome to the forums! :D

You are NOT rooted right now correct? It seems like most people go with the HTCDEV method. If you want to get right into flashing ROMS you don't need to use captain throwbacks method. Once you have the bootloader unlocked and a custom recovery you can start to flash ROMS.

As for what ROM to flash...... Go with MikG 3.11 It has bloatware removed, its highly optimized, has the hacked sprint hotspot that'll work for free. It is also sense-based so it will look close to stock

should i be concerned about the watermark?

that was one of the differences i saw with htcdev and captain/taco, i was wondering if it was worth it to roll back to a non-watermarked hboot, i guess im really just curious about what this watermark will interfere with :S

It is def worth getting rid of the watermark. The watermark just signifies that you at some point have rooted the device. If sprint sees your bootloader is watermarked it automatically voids your warranty.

If the warranty is gone or if you have no insurance you dont need to get rid of the watermark, but there are benefits to gaining full S-off as well such as flashing radios.

Thanks for all of your help and advice, great guide, definately lots of information. my device has successfully been rooted and rom'd, im going to play around with MikG for a bit get it where i like it and titan everything before i remove my watermark.

Well Done Gentlemen, well done...

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
congrats on getting your root and your flash on:D:D:D

one word of advice make sure that you make nandroid backups and especially if you are going to make changes to your phone like flashing roms, kernels, mods or themes. just remember that nandroid backups are your friend. they have saved me many times over.

Please help.
I am trying to root my Sprint HTC Evo 4G. All I want to do is be able to tether my phone to my Ipad3 for free. I followed all the steps in the HTCdev and now on my boatloader screen is says unlocked. I next tried to run the recovery program and i keep getting the message "cannot load recovery.img
I created the Android folder on my C drive. Was that where it was suppose to be? Do I also need to download MikG? Remember all I want to do is be able to tether my phone.
Please help. I am so new to this and I am lost!

Welcome to the forums!!! We'll get you all squared away. :D

I haven't actually rooted my phone using this method as its still fairly new, but getting the phone unlocked is a huge stepping stone.

This is from the guide:
you can install amon ra 2.3 by the following:
1.download amon ra 2.3 from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.extract the recovery.img file and place it in the android folder you created when unlocking your bootloader.
3.on your phone after you have unlocked your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3

Make sure its located in your android folder and do the option where you hold shift while right clockign and open the command prompt from there so you know your in the right folder. Also, did you extract the recovery image?

So, I used to have my phone rooted and had wifi tethering etc on it. It's the only way to get internet at my place. It worked great until my buddy was trying to figure something out on my phone at work and accepted a system update that the window just popped up. I can't use anything anymore and when i try to use the wifi it just says there were errors.

It's currently running 2.3.5. and the bootloader screen tells me this info

If anyone can help me re-root or root the phone again that would be greatly appreciated. I looked at the guide and I'm unsure if that would apply here that I should just root the whole phone over again seeing as S-OFF I'm not sure if I'm just completely SOL. Thanks for the help guys.

No you should be fine, simply take this opportunity to download and flash a new ROM.

Flashing instructions can be found here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

I would suggest MikG 3.11:
MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

Also, UNCHECK the box that allows the phone to search for updates!

you do not need to re-root as you have s-off still. do you have a custom recovery still? if so then try and wipe dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps. or you can flash a rom like rxpert said.

Thanks so much for your help. I forgot to move the recovery file to the android folder.
I have a new question. I am trying to install MikG. But I am seeing that I need to back up my phone. I've downloaded Titanium and MyBackup. Both programs are saying that my phone is not rooted. Am I missing something? Is there another way for me to back up my phone? Maybe from the boat loader?
Thanks so much for your patience and help!

Gaining S-off (or an unlocked bootloader) is only part of being rooted. You also need to be running a rooted ROM. The easiest way to do this is to just root the stock ROM by flashing the superuser file.
Try this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/63060876/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
Flash it in recovery.

Also, be sure your making a nandroid backup, and not just backing up apps. Nandroids will save the entire state of your phone. Its like a time machine.

I would highly suggest you flash a custom ROM after making your nandroid backup. MikG 3.11 is sense based so it will look like what your used to with the stock ROM, but it also has all kinds of bells and whistles like a hacked sprint hotspot and sense 3.0 elements.

Instructions for anything you need can be found here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. Ignore the rooting parts and skip to life after root.

Hey, so i just rooted my phone about 2 days ago and i just have some question if you guys can help me out. I know some of these question are probably basic stuff.

1. I have been looking around at roms, i am currently using a rom called evolved. i have been hearing people mentioning clockworkmod recovery, what is a clockworkmod? Is it something i need?

2. rooting your phone is suppose to save memory and stuff like that right? before i rooted my phone i had "app 2 sd" downloaded to save space on my internal memory. do i still need that with a rooted phone or is there something else?

3. If i downloaded a kernel would it work for any rom that i have on my evo 4g?

4. I have seen different answer but none seem to be straight forward, what is the difference between root with s-on and s-off?

if any one can help me that would be great.

Thanks:)

Please help!! I am trying to unlock my bootloader and in Step 12 when I type fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin into the cmd prompt this is what I get:

sending 'unlocktoken' (395 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.297s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
FAILED (remote: unlock token check failed)
finished. total time: 0.297s

What happened and how can I correct it?

1. clockwork mod is a recovery. it is an ok recovery. but many (including me) will always recommend amon ra 2.3 as the best recovery to use.

2. ok please read this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has a ton of info that you should know. to answer your question please go to the partitioning section. you need to have your card partition to really move your apps to the card. apps2sd does not move the entire app to the card. only part of it is moved.

3. no kernels are specific to the type of rom that you are on. if you are on gingerbread sense based rom then you will need a kernel to match that. if you are on aosp then you will need an aosp kernel to go with that rom. froyo sense kernels will not work with gingerbread sense roms and voce versa. you can go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html. it is a list of roms and kernels that we try to keep current.

4. well in the old days you had to have s-off to be fully rooted. but with HTC locking up the bootloader and allowing us to unlock it, having s-ff is not as important. HTC has allowed us to gain access to the system partition. this is a great explaination taken from the HTCdev site:
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.

hope that helps.

have you tried and re-download the .bin file and try again?

I just did and this is the error I got:

C:\android>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending 'unlocktoken' (395 KB)...
FAILED (command write failed (Too many links))
finished. total time: 0.016s

huh, i have never seen the "too many links" error before. just googled that and it seems that other devices inckuding the evo 4g has had this issue before. i have not found a solution for it yet though.

just to make sure that you did remove the old .bin file from the android folder correct?

Yes, I removed the old .bin file before trying again. I also tried re-locking the bootloader by typing fastboot oem lock and going back to step 12, but i get the same error message as before.

Well, I finally got my bootloader unlocked. i don't know what the problem was, but I gave it a day and tried again today and it worked just fine. I am now unlocked, but since I am at home and only have a mac here, is there anyway to flash the MikG ROM on a Mac? If so, can anyone help me with the steps? Thanks in advance.

Hey gang. Got my phone all rooted, but I now can't get it to go back to using it. Every time I restart my phone, I go to the bootloader menu, re: my options are Fastboot, Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, and Power Down. I have been unable to actually get back into normal phone use mode. Am I missing something?

Hello all.. I have the same scenario. I used option 1 (HTC Dev method) and was able to get through all of the steps.

I even did this again:

try this rom:
MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

1.download the rom
2.go into recovery and select backup and make a nandroid backup
3.go back to the main menu and select wipe
4.wipe dalvik cache, then cache, and finally system
5.go back to the main menu and select usb-ms toggle and move mikg3.11 file over to the sd card. DO NOT PUT IT IN A FOLDER. just leave it on the root of the sd card.
6.select flash zip from sd card and then scroll down to the mikg 3.11 file by using the vol up or vol down and then select it with the power button.
7.first boot up will take a bit longer then normal so do not panic. the phone needs to be build up the caches and that takes some time.
8.congrats!!!!!!!!!!you have now mikg3.11

Unfortunately It still boots to the bootloader menu, re: my options are Fastboot, Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, and Power Down. I have been unable to actually get back into normal phone use mode.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Hi everyone. I am new here and was following this thread while I was unlocking my phone. I am still new to this so would like some help. I have successfully rooted/unlocked my phone using the htcdev instructions. After doing that, I downloaded the free wifi teathering app but when I went to use it, it said that the app is only works on rooted phones and my phone isn't rooted? What does that mean? I thought I rooted it after following the htcdev instructions.

select bootloader and then you should see the recovery option. question though, did you install a custom recovery as per the guide?

you need to flash the su file which grants apps like wifi tether access to the system partitions. or you can flash a custom rom if you like. did you install a custom recovery? there is directions in the op for this thread on how to install a custom recoevry (amon ra 2.3) and then how to either flash the su file or flash a custom rom.
