Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Once you've wiped the phone it will stay wiped until you flash something.

You can mount the SD card through the recovery, so just do that and then transfer it over still zipped up.

Yes! im finally rooted! after three long days of screwing stuff up i managed to root my phone! And 100% thanks to you guys i got it working, thank both of you! so, now what kind of cool stuff can i do with my new mikg rom??

YES!!!! I am finally rooted and I got the MikG rom installed. Thanks to everyone who helped and all those involved in putting this guide together. Can I now delete any apps off the phone that I want?

Congratulations on your Rootedness! :D

have you made a nand backup yet? That is a good place to start. nands are your friend! You mess up trying something, and you can go right back to a working setup.

I use Titanium Backup pro. there is a free version and then you get the paid version, as well. It is relatively inexpensive and is a great friend of the frequent rom flasher.

It can be used to freeze and uninstall apps. you freeze them first, for a period of time, and see if they cause any problems not working. then you can go ahead and remove them if they don't cause any ill effects.

I'm also getting the waiting for device error. It's interesting because when the device is on and running it can see the device with adb devices, but when it's in HBOOT I get no devices attached.

EDIT: LOL I guess I had to hit the fastboot button on the phone, everything came right up.

Edit2: I'm on MikG now, another happy customer, thanks for showing me the ropes!

glad you got your root and your flash on:party:

Ok, I'm a complete novice on rooting. I'm trying to follow everything being talked about.. but talk about making my head spin! First the facts...

HTC Evo 4g 2.3.5 never rooted(attempted once, didn't get very far)

Evo just got a factory reset

Using windows XP on a MacBook running Boot Camp

I tried following the steps on page 1. When it said hold power+vol down to get your ???, I get nothing! My phone vibrates and the prompt for shutting down/restart comes up. Not what is in the instructions.

Also, the instructions look to be using a newer version of windows?

Help!! Remember, talking to a complete dummy when it comes to rooting!!

Thanks, Alex

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing. :p

I don't mean this next comment as a slight to ocnbrze, because I very much appreciate all he has done to help people with the rooting process, but at the beginning of the guide where he says...

"first lets make sure that this guide is for you. before we do anything make sure that you have disbaled fastboot. on you phone go to settings>apps>uncheck the fastboot option at the bottom. now press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader screen"

...it should instruct you to power down after disabling fastboot and before depressing the vol down & power buttons. After all this guide is intended for people like myself who may be somewhat tech savvy but who lack specific experience with things like this.

I was hoping to root my Evo 4G today too but it has been a somewhat frustrating day today tech wise. I was embracing my inner dummy a little to much apparently. I started off being stubborn in trying to get HTC Sync to work thinking it would be the most ideal way to back up my phone before attempting to root. After spending close to an hour speaking to 2 different techs @ HTC and having the 2nd one disagree with and contradict alot of things the 1st tech had told me I got frustrated and decided I needed to forget about HTC Sync all together. Unfortunately the 1st tech had me go through and clear the data from most of my apps and in the process I lost all my user names & passwords that were saved in my Data Vault app! Took me awhile to calm down from that one but it's my own fault for not realizing what would happen when she instructed me to do that. :-/ I've since downloaded the My Backup app and successfully backed up everything to my sd card.

So now I can focus on getting ready to root my phone, then swap to the larger sd card, then partition it, then reload everything to the new card, then flash Flash MikG3.11.If that's the wrong order to do things by all means tell me. ;-)

I will edit the guide to reflect that.:o

I'm new but not that new to rooting my Evo ...I rooted my original Evo when it was still 2.2 I think using the Rev. method. Just got an Asurion replacement and am trying to just unlock it for now, it's 2.3.5 hboot 2.18. Having problems, like Im already on the bootloader menu with no option to go to fastboot alone, fastboot usb is above the instructions on using the arrows and power button and recovery is on the list as well. I already have Amon RA 2.3 recovery on the SD, plus the older superuser 2.3 6.3 I think, many ROMS, etc. etc. Am I confusing something when I'm using the HTCdev unlock method and my 16gb SD with recovery on it? Do I need to skip a step? I don't know, I'm confused. Thanks for any suggestions

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if it says fastboot usb then you are in fastboot.

Thanks a ton for the welcome! I have not tried again yet but am about to, a few questions.
- I have Superuser 3.0.7 on my SD from it being rooted before, not sure how but it is, su-2.36.3 is on the SD a well, can I erase that one or doesn't it really matter?
-The amon ra2.3 file PC36IMG.zip is already on the SD, can I use that to install recovery or should I follow your instructions and put the recovery.img file in the Android folder I made and use the cmd method you describe. If I can use the .zip already on the card could you briefly describe how, thanks.

I've got a bunch of good ROM's on the card, my favorite being MikG v3.11, and an awesome ICS theme by MikG now to unlock it safely, it's been awhile since I rooted my Evo and I'm a bit rusty.

Thanks and any suggestions are appreciated!

I'm new to these forums and i have gone deep into the rooting of my EVO and i've achieved everything up to captain throwbacks method steps 10 and 11. I have the file PC36IMG.zip file on my sdcard but when i go into the Hboot it wont recognize the update as in the picture. Is it possibly the type of memory card? or is the file wrong? HELP!!!

Welcome to the forums!!! :)

Make sure the file is named correctly. If you haven't set windows to show extensions, there's a good chance it's named PC36IMG.zip.zip.

For flashing the recovery, you need to follow the instructions in the guide. You have the new Hboot and unlocked it with htcdev, so you still have S-ON. You won't be able to flash a recovery like the old days. :(

As far as the SU file, it's ok to delete the old one.

MikG is a rock solid rom, and the ICS theme by Pneuma is off the chain!! :burnout:

Unfortunately, because of the locked bootloader the PC36IMG.img well not work. You well have to use the method listed in the guide. there is a file that captain Throwback has but I lost the link. If he can post back then you can use that. Otherwise you will need to use what I have in the guide.

Thanks for the response! I changed the file name to the proper format but my phone still wont pick up the update. It seems like the sdcard doesnt mount when it boots into Hboot. Im beginning to get ticked off! >:(

Yeah I love the MikG 3.11, and yes the ICS theme is by Pneuma, that is a sweet theme. It's not unlocked yet, about to start then I'm flashing both of them, I think I can?

Why did my rooted, perfect, loved everything about it Evo have to fall of the roof of my car....:(

What was that poor thing doing on the roof of your car!

No worries, we'll get you rooted again

does it say wrong image or no image when you boot into the bootloader? if so that is normal.

just to make sure are you naming it correctly? does your computer normally list the extensions on files that are on your computer? for instance on the PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1.zip file, when you download the file on your computer do you see PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1.zip or does it show PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1 with no .zip added to the end? if you see the exntesion then when you rename it make sure to have the extension there. if it shows no zip at the end then just rename it, but do not add a zip to the end as then it will be named PC36IMG.zip.zip which will not work.

also just to make sure are you putting the file just on the card? no folders, correct? cuz that is where it should be.

also this is taking from captain thowback's guide:
If the bootloader doesn't recognize the PC36IMG.zip, and you used Windows Explorer to rename the PC36IMG file, make sure you didn't add an extra ".zip" to the end of the file name. Most people hide file extensions, so that can happen without you even realizing it (especially if you see that it's already recognized as a "ZIP" file). If you still have issues after checking that, the only other reason it wouldn't work is a corrupt or faulty SD card. If you can try a different card, see if the PC36IMG file works on it.

I followed all of the tacoroot steps ... during the command entering process the cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image command gave an error said it didnt exist ... I completed the process and during my phones reboot it gave errors when reading the pc36img file it said flash img not found in red during a few steps in the automatic process ... then at the end it said main version is older! update fail! ... and it is still hboot 2.18.0001.... what should i do?

you can't just skip the commands, especially if you are getting an error on a certain command. that issue will need to be resolved before you can move on.

the reason that the PC36IMG zip did not work was because the downgrade of the misc partition did not work. you have to have everything matching as it shows in the guide. if your output does not match with what is shown then something went wrong.

so what exactly did the error say?

are you sure that you have the flash_image and the mtd-eng files on the card? did you extract them first like it says in the guide?

are entering the command from the android folder where all the adb files are kept?

checked that it isnt that problem for some reason when doing the command cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image it said the file did not exist I did extract both flash file to the sd card
