Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Ok so I followed #1 HTCdev method. Used fast boot to get recovery and stayed stock with the su file. I should be rooted right? Then I went to market and installed wireless tether, my iPad sees it but I can't access Internet. Did I do something wrong or miss something?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
sounds like you are rooted. what wireles tether app are you using? you can try one of these:
Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

also most custom roms will have the sprint hotspot hacked that works for most people as well.

I hope someone can point out what I am obviously missing. I have been trying unsuccessfully for 2 days to unlock my evo 4g with the HTC Dev method. I have read the various methods (HTC Dev, Captains, TacoRoot), downloaded, installed, updated and copied all the necessary files. I am running hboot 2.18. I have the most recent Java, HTC Sync, and SDK (revision 19). The problem: the computer (windows 7-64 bit) only recognizes the phone as My HTC when it is in HTC Sync mode. Otherwise, it is only seen as a storage device. When I reboot into fastboot mode, it disappears, and when I run fastboot at the command prompt to get the identifier token, it just hangs at waiting for device.

Seems like it must be a driver issue, I just cannot for the life of me seem to get it to recognize the device while in fastboot usb...:( You lot obviously know what you're doing, so ANY help would be so much appreciated.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
do not run htc sync. you just need to be in fastboot and have your phne connect via usb cable. you do not need to set it as disk drive as your phone will be powered off to get to the bootloader which you will then select fastboot. in the instructions from htc, there is no step saying to run htc sync. you just need to download and install it so you can get the driver for it.

when you are in fastboot, what happens? how do you know the phone is not recognized?

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Sorry the HTC sync thing was unclear. I'm not running the program when I attempt the fastboot. I just meant that the only time the phone even shows up as My HTC in the device mgr is when the usb connect type "HTC Sync" on the phone is selected (as opposed to charge only, disk drive, or networking), and this doesn't help when the phone gets restarted obviously. Under any other circumstances the Android device does not appear on the device list. When I start the bootloader and select fastboot, plug in the usb, nothing happens, no indication that the computer has noticed ANY change, and the phone just sits there with Andy skateboarding and fastboot displayed above the next list of options (bootloader, reboot, etc).

Edit: Was able to get it fixed. Had to use a diffrent recovery file used the one from Captain's guide

Hello,

I'm brand new to rooting, I followed the steps in this guide and HTC's website. however I can not get the recovery to flash. I have search this site and others with nothing working for me. I tried puting the PC36IMG.zip file into my root dir and I get and error saying its older and does not do anything.

When I try to flash recovery.img I get an error saying data transfer failure. I have tried the CMD prompt and the Android Flasher program. I have USB Debugging turned on.

Any help would be greatly appropriated.

Thank you.

OK so here is my problem. I was rooted with GB 2.3.3, I unrooted so I could upgrad to GB 2.3.5 and then realized that there was the ICS that I could root to. So I started that process. I followed the hctdev site to get unlocked (done) I then flashed aokp_supersonic_build-34 and realized that I did not have s-off. Now I'm stuck (android v. 4.0.4; radio 2.15.00.12.19; s-on; amon RA2.3) and cannot get back to GB 2.3.5 or get s-off. I tried following the tuts and get errors. I need to get back to stock so I can do this all over again. Can anyone help?

ok first thing though you should never unroot to accept an ota. all you needed to do is flash a custom rom with the latest ota.

and with the HTCdev method you will not get s-off. it will still be s-on but you will have the bootloader unclocked. and as long as you have a custom recovery then you will be fine.

if you want to fully get s-off then follow this guide and use either captain's method or taco root method:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

haha... I'm realizing that now. I have gone through the tut at the beginning of this forum. I'm going to try it again. I'll let you know how it goes.

Why would I be able to flash to aokp_supersonic_build-34 which is android 4.0.4 and now I can't flash back?

Here is an error that I'm receiving

Any Suggestions on how to get the phone to show up in fastboot mode? Computer still doesn't recognize it when it's not on and in HTC Sync USB connect type.

try plugging your phone in first then go into the bootloader and then select fastboot. and just to be sure when it says fastboot usb then you are in fastboot. if it does not say that then you are not there.

have you tried another cable? it could also be your sd card. what card are you using?

how do I know if I have HTC sync installed? I know this is probably stupid, but should it be on my computer too? & Is it already on my phone?

okay, so i'm working on unlocking my bootloader by using the htcdev site & i can't get my indentifier token. i've done everything i was supposed to, & when i put the token in that's showing my command prompt the htcdev site is saying this "We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary. Error Code: Invalid Bootloader Token Length.
Error Reason: The submitted Token appears to be the wrong length and won\'t work.
" Please help!

On the phone right now, but if you look in the OP I have it shown on where to start and end on copying the token. It has to be copied exactly as I have it in guide.

this is taken from the guide:

the first line you should highlight should be:
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>
and end with:
<<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>

then just copy and paste it into the command.

and almost forgot to say:
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!

OK another dumb question... I have seen posts that say you have to rename the rom to pc36img, and on others it says nothing of the sort. Can someone explain when you have to do this rename?

You have to have your phone turned on and in charge only mode...
