Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
i would use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

there are three different methods. but you are unlocked at least. not sure on what method you tried to do to get fully rooted.

also use the guide to get recovery. not sure what happened.

can you go in to exactly what you did and if you had any issues while trying to root. the more info as far as what you did will help.

thanks for the quick reply and welcome haha anyways after the htcdev unlock i tried to make it easy on myself (visual learner) and saw some of the videos. clicked on this and followed it..

ok lets get you a phone that works. so does it boot up?

try and use my guide to get you amon ra as your custom recovery. the one in the link is for clockwork mod which is not a very good recovery. amon ra 2.3 is waaaay better.

the custom recovery has to be installed on the sd card but like i said before it doesnt take me to the recovery bootloader. i tried removing the sd card and using other phones since i dont have an adapter at the moment. thanks for the help i know one can only do so much. also when i used the other phones(razr, x) the sd card wouldnt be compatible and would only let me format them

sorry should have been more specific. so this is from the guide:
how to install amon ra 2.3 recovery:
you can install amon ra 2.3 by the following:
1.download amon ra 2.3 from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.extract the recovery.img file and place it in the android folder you created when unlocking your bootloader.
3.on your phone after you have unlocked your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3

so try that and see if we can get you a recovery.

ok so the guide that you linked to shows you how to downgrade your misc partition by using captain throwback's method. and its a shame that there is no credit to the captain as this is his method:mad:

i would go to captain throwback's thread here:
[GUIDE] How to achieve S-OFF after unlocking 2.18 HBOOT with HTCDev.com - No More Watermark! :)

just start after the unlocking process and start over.

well if that does not work then it might not be recovery. it could be that some thing is wrong with your misc partition. that is why i recommend that you use captain throwback's guide and try and downgrade your misc partituion again. he has a pixture of what the results should look like when you enter the commands. make sure that it is exactly what it shows before moving on.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few guides which refer specifically to my method for downgrading (which in all fairness, I borrowed from toastcfh), and without any credit. In fact, some of them point directly to the attachments from the thread over @ themikmik! But no worries - I don't do this for the credit - just trying to help everyone get the most out of their device, like I try to :).

And that's also why this is the ONLY thread (besides my own over on themikmik) that has my official stamp of approval :D.

"I am Captain Throwback, and I approve this thread"

@ocnbrze
Have you had a chance to add this PC36IMG.zip as an alternative method of flashing recovery (via bootloader) after the device is unlocked? That might be easier for some of the people that are having issues with the command line and/or Android Flasher.

no sorry captain. i keep forgetting to add it into the guide. but i will do so now. thanx again for being awesome!:adore:

ok guys,
so i cleaned up the guide a little especially in the HTCdev method section. i added a new way to get recovery with a special PC36IMG file that will work with the bootloader (thanx captain throwback).

I've decided to root my Evo, and after some long thinking, decided to go with Tacoroot, and I got everything prepared, but when I start with the commands, I'm not getting any response from "adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tacoroot.sh" is this correct? I've included an SC of what I'm seeing...

Android 2.3.5 - hboot 1.18

Any and all info/help is GREATLY appreciated!

Alright, I pushed through, but when I reboot my phone at the end it says
"Main version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you wish to reboot device?"

I feel like i missed something small but this is the 4th time following every step inch by inch... Thanks again for your help!

something went wrong then when you tried to change the misc partition. did your output match with what was shown on the screen?

and to be sure you are on the step with the PC36IMG file correct?

At which point is the output on cmd supposed to match the phone? I'm not sure if I'm tired and that's why I'm not quite comprehending or if I really am missing something lol. I'm going to try and just go slower and look to make sure everything is matching.

If I restart everything, do I just start from the top at step 6 - Reboot to stock recovery?

And yes, I am on that step. I copied PC36IMG.zip into the root folder of my sdcard in my phone.

Right, those are the same commands in tutorial starting at 11...

Am I supposed to do anything besides type in steps 7-10?
adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tacoroot.sh
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.sh --setup
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.sh --root

I have a feeling this is where I'm messing something up...

Thank you so much, I'm sorry I'm not less of a noob!

ahhhh yes steps 11 and 12 is where you downgrade your misc partition so tha the PC36IMG will work for you.

See at step 8 when i type in that command, it doesnt do or say anything. like its not recognizing it...

just keep going til you get to step 11.

when you get to step 11 and type adb shell you should get a # in the command line. if you get a $ then you do not have root access. try and type su at this point and the $ should change to # and you can then continue on.

Nope, I was wrong! I think i found it...

Starting at step 12, its not finding "flash_image"...
But it's in there... what type of file is it supposed to be? there is no ext type on it...
