Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

OK another dumb question... I have seen posts that say you have to rename the rom to pc36img, and on others it says nothing of the sort. Can someone explain when you have to do this rename?
Ok so the PC36IMG file used for a number of things. It can be used to install a custom recovery, splash screens and bootanimation, radios, and finally flash a stock rom and stock recovery. It will never be used to install a custom rom, however.
Hi I am currently interested in rooting my Evo 4g Hboot 2.18 with the Htcdev method, but when i get to step 8 and i type in the get identifier token comand it prompts me that i am waiting on device? should my phone still be in the boot loader screen or should it be completely turned on. I am extrememly interested in rooting my phone so thanks in advance to any and all help. Thanks

Your phone actually needs to be in fastboot. so power off then press and holds power + vol down. In the bootloader menu, select fastboot. you should see the menu change from fastboot to fastboot USB.

Hi, I'm a total novice at rooting, and after much time and effort Ive arrived at the third step.
Unfortunately, after putting the superuser zip download in the root directory of the sd card, and then booting into recovery, nothing happens. I just get some sort of error.

So here it is in more detail:
I turn off the phone.
I turn it back on, holding down power and Vol down.
I press down to "Recovery" and press 'Power'.
I get a white flash screen and then the system goes into recovery.
I scroll down to 'Flash zip from sdcard'. Press 'Power'.
I scroll down to 'choose zip from sdcard'. Press 'Power'.
I scroll all the way down (actually one up) to 'Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip'. Press 'Power'.
Dark screen says 'Press Power to confirm.'. I press 'Power'.

I get the following message:

Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
(bad)

Installation aborted.

That's it. I press 'Return' and start to wonder what I did wrong.

Think the file got corrupted in the download? Maybe I messed up with one of the earlier steps?
Somebody please help!
Thanks a lot!

It's about the size of a thumbnail.
Its total capacity is 7.5 GB.
2.88 GB is used, 4.61 GB is free.

I thought it might be helpful to add these pieces of info:

I checked both the Amon Ra recovery and the Superuser zip file with the md5 checker. They both checked out all right.

I wouldn't know if the flashing of the recovery file came through ok. I used the Android Flasher program, and if I remember right, it said that it went through ok, but I don't know how to verify that.

I have EasyTether installed on my phone. You think that might make a difference?

I am kind of desperate to get this phone rooted, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok lol not the actual size of the card. i just needed to know the storage capacity. the evos have issues with cards that are 2gb or less.

and to quote someone just hit the quote dial on the post you want to quote. it should then take to where you can reply to the quote.

ok not sure what is going on but you may want to just flash a custom rom. i would recommend that you try mikg3.11. it is waaaaaaaaay better then stock. you can get it here:MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]. download the full wipe version. also you can go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html.

Okay, I followed the guide, but have not started captain throwback's guide yet. However, probably due to previously rooting my phone (despite putting it back to stock - at least I thought) I already have S-OFF. I am still seeing HBOOT 2.18. So I'm wondering if I need to proceed to downgrade my HBOOT or not and then do unrevoked, which is how I rooted my phone before and probably why I have S-OFF still. What do I gain by downgrading to HBOOT 2.10 and unrevoked? I'm not really sure what S-OFF is for, but I have it.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!!! :)

Thats really strange you have S-OFF and hboot 2.18. I wouldn't mess with the downgrade process just yet.

Try to flash a custom recovery from hboot using this file:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip

Rename to exactly PC36IMG (if your pc doesn't show extensions, if so add the .zip to the end) place it on the root of your sd card.
Turn off fastboot: menu / settings/applications/ uncheck fastboot
Then power the phone down, wait 10 seconds, boot into hboot ( volume down and power simultaneously)
The phone should ask you to uodate select yes, and let it do its thing.
Choose no to reboot and select recovery, once booted it should show Amon-RA 2.3 at the bottom of the screen.

Post back and let us know if that works. :)

yep like granite said, i would not really mess with that. there is no need. you have the hardest part done by having your securities turned off. all you need to do now is get a custom recovery (like granite suggested, amon ra 2.3 is preferred) and then either flash the su file (if you plan on staying on stock) or flash a custom rom ( i would suggest mikg3.11, it is waaay better then stock).

Thanks Granite and ocnbrze. I should have added that I already have flashed amon ra 2.3 as well as the su 3.0.7 file. Both appear to have worked correctly. I know amon ra was successful because I used it to flash the su file (obviously), but I'm not sure if the su file worked or how to tell. So, assuming I did that correctly is there anything left to do besides flash a custom ROM? Any advantage to dropping to 2.10 and doing unrevoked? I think I'm still watermarked b/c I see the "unlocked" at the top of the bootloader, but is that a big deal? I don't see anything wrong with it unless I take it to a Sprint store for repair.

Thanks again!

By the way, I'm thinking about using the Fresh EVO rom, but it appears the geekfor.me web site is down. Anyone know what's up or have a better ROM suggestion?

only advantage really is it is eaiser to get unrooted with unrevoked. but other then that there is none.

if you have a custom recovery and the su file (only needed if you are staying on stock) then you are good to go. now go and get your flash on:D

So, any idea what's up with Fresh EVO? The geekfor.me site has been down since I checked yesterday. Any other ROMs you think are better?

Thanks for responding again.

1. I went to the first link and downloaded the zip file. They didn't have the md5 number to check it and for my download I got 0B736C57712B788564316AFAF4807902
Does this match the true file? Sorry to bother, but it does happen occasionally that the download corrupts (especially on my connection), and the last thing I want to do is brick the phone.

2. You sent a link to the old unrevised guide. Is that the one I should be using, or should I use the revised one? I'm running 2.3.5.

3. I did a drop more diagnostics. It turns out that when I turn on the phone with the Power and Vol down, and I get into the white screen that says UNLOCKED on top, after about 2-3 seconds the bottom of the screen flashes a message for about 1 second. It went too fast to read so I had to use a video camera to catch it. This is what it says:

SD Checking...
Loading... [PC36DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading... [PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading... [PC36IMG.zip]
No image!
Loading... [PC36IMG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
After that it goes back to what it said before.
I don't know whether this is the norm or not, but if it's not it might tip you off as to what is going on.

Thank you again for your ongoing work helping us all out here!

Hello and welcome to the forums.

If you are unlocked, you simply need to flash a custom recovery to start flashing ROMS. OCN linked you to the old guide because thats where most of our current instructions are. Everything there in the after root section still applies to you.

That check it normal. Its looking for a file that it uses to update.

Please excuse my ignorance with this subject. I have gotten my EVO into an "unlocked" status with S-ON however I have just purchased a new laptop and I don't have the unlock_bin code anymore. Do I need to get a new code? Will I be able to do so and use the new code since the phone is already unlocked? If I can't get a new code should I just start all over and do a hard reset? Will I lose my contacts? Also I would appreciate any feedback anyone could give regarding the merits or disadvantages of using the "rootevo4ggingerbread" method. Thanks.

no need for the code any more as your phone is now unlocked.

1. lets try and new link. try and download it from here:
Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip

2.sorry it was late for me and i forgot to mention that the guide i linked is for instructions on how to flash a rom. the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html has a ton of info in the after root section.

3.and that is normal. like rxpert says, your bootloader is programmed to look for a certain file and if it does not find it then it will say what you see. i would not worry about it.

IT WORKED!!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! God bless you! My phone is now rooted! This is unbelievable, after all this time and effort!

Now I'm going into life after root.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

glad it worked. now make a nandroid backup and get your flash on:D

Hey ocnbrze, directly asking you since you seem to be one of the most savvy. I was trying to root the evo with this same thread and while i think i got pretty far, i am completely lost now. I managed to use htcdev to unlock the device then used this method to root
not letting me link youtube account name MrTekn010933
after i finished this i thought i was set, installed su, busybox and then rebooted my phone. Here's where the problem's at.. It flashes the htc splash page forever in a loop, over and over. When i went to the bootloader (power, volume down) it gave me the options but i saw that it said s-on which i though the method would have changed to s-off. Also when i tried to select the Recovery option it would go back to that endless loop. I read something about reinstalling the stock roms all over again but that lead to more steps haha I'm bad.. Anyways would really appreciate the help since i just registered to this community for this problem.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
i would use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

there are three different methods. but you are unlocked at least. not sure on what method you tried to do to get fully rooted.

also use the guide to get recovery. not sure what happened.

can you go in to exactly what you did and if you had any issues while trying to root. the more info as far as what you did will help.

It's always pretty when it works :D

Please do not use YouTube videos. They are hardly ever kept up to date and have caused more problems here than they have solved
