Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

have you tried replacing the cable? or it might be your battery. you can try replacing it.

Sorry should have been more clear about that, I tried 4 or 5 different chargers and all were doing the same thing. I can definitely try changing the battery, just wanted to check with you guys if it had any known link to rooting since I saw some random unreliable forum had someone blame their ROM on their battery's inability to charge

no this sounds like something else. rom's for the most part are pretty stable and has nothing to do with charging your batteries. if anything you can try and wipe dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps. but i really think that it is your battery.

yea i did everything right now im stuck at step 3 on HTCdev method

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so in order for us to help you we need as much info that you can provide us. we need to know exactly what part you are at and exactly what the problem is. what are you having difficulties with?

Hi again! I have a quick couple of questions for you. SHould I update the super user app from the play store? And this one probably isnt supposed to go in the post but figured you could probably answer and I can keep both questions together. It seems I need busybox for most rooted apps? I see in the play store it screwed a lot of peoples stuff up and I dont want that! Thanks in advance!

i only use whatever version the super user app that comes with the rom. there is really no need to update it unless it is instructed to do so in the rom's op. just leave it alone.

Im doing the captain throwback method but im still only unlocking my bootloader.

RyRyV2,
How did you end up getting this to work?
I'm trying the HTCdev method and getting the '< waiting for device >' issue as well.
Debugging and Charge only turned on, in loader menu, when i choose 'fastboot' it ends up switching to 'fastboot usb' above the 'up down power to select instructions'

Not getting any closer.

supersonic evt 2-3 SHIP S-ON
hboot 2.18.0001

if you need more info, let me know.

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

I need some help here folks. So I had a lapse in thinking one day and "nearly" acceptance an OTA. I accidently clicked accept and immediately stopped it (shut off my phone etc). Well apparently it downloaded far enough to where the next time I reset my phone it installed it automatically. It didn't even tell me it was installing it just told me my phone had been updated. Now I need help. First here is the info on my phone...

Sprint Evo 4G running Ginger Bread (2.3.5), Kernel - 2.6.35.10-g4b48446. My phone is rooted, but I still have the stock ROM.

So my phone updated the software to the newest version 4.67.651.3. I know at the beginning of this thread there is an alert message about not downloading it (as with any OTA's on a rooted phone), but it did and now I'm here.

So my problem is that now I cannot send or receive MMS. It sits there acting like it's trying to send without ever sending it. Is it possible to revert back to an older software version (assuming this is what broke the MMS in the first place)? Help from any of you would be GREATLY appreciated!

Greetings and welcome.
Well, what does your bootloader screen say.
Power down, wait a few, hold volume down while pressing power and report back what that screen says, and we go from there.
At least you didn't accept the latest update 5.0 something:)

Thanks.

I screwed up and thought that I had the sync program already installed. Turns out I didnt.... installed it and everything went smoothly.
Thank you very much for the detailed instructions.

Now I need to figure out how to roll back a restore. After installing MikG, i restored 'Concacts' thinking that's where they were stored, but now each time I go to 'people' it forces close. 'com.android.htccontacts stopped unexpectaedly.'
I assume this is because of the restor i did.

Sorry. It says "unlocked".

o.k...I am pretty sure you may be o.k but not sure, however,....do you have a custom recovery?
As in, hilight recovery in the bootloader screen and select it.. If you do, then wipe cache and dalvik cache and see if that helps.
If you get the red ! triangle thing, then we'll have to get you a recovery.
Not sure it this OTA messed you up alot or a little.
Do you remember how you rooted your phone before?

Ok quick questions. Will there be any data loss or anything I should back up before trying the "recovery"? I'm not sure I did a custom recovery. I followed the instructions in this thread, but if there isn't a step to do it, I probably didn't. I can check though after you let me know about these answers so I don't get ahead of myself here. What gets wiped anyway when I clear the cache and dalvik cache? I do that through Titanium right?

I do remember how I rooted it. I used the HTC method mentioned at the beginning of this thread. I just never flashed a custom ROM to it. I have the stock rom. I basically rooted it to wipe bloatware and to get the titanium backup and super user stuff. I haven't spent enough time yet teaching myself about the customs ROMs etc to feel comfortable doing all that yet since this is my only phone at the moment.

Gotcha, o.k. well, if you have Titanium, I would assume you have the superuser app in your app drawer. You can check that first. If that is true, you have a rooted stock rom. If you try to get to recovery, and you do not have one, you can get out of it fine without losing anything.
Let's say you go into bootloader...then you highlight recovery and press power to select...the you get the red ! triangle thing...no problem, just hold down both volume up and down while pushing power and it will get you to the stock recovery, where you can just reboot from there.
Then we can work on getting a custom recovery which is outlined in the op of this thread.
Wiping cache and dalvik cache "cleans" stuff up and will not hurt anything.
It's a good solution to multiple problems.
Let's just say I am 95% sure on what I just wrote.;)

Ok awesome thanks! So what is our first step? Try clearing the cache and dalvik cache or to try to do the recovery?

Well, not sure if you can wipe cache and dalvik from stock recovery if you have that.
I would try to go into recovery from your hboot screen to see if you have a custom recovery to wipe from there...if you do let me know what recovery you have...if not, go to the begining of this guide to install a custom recovery.
I believe it is step 3 after the htcdev method??

Ok so I think I do. I clicked on the recovery and it took me to another screen. What do I do from here?
Nice, what recovery do you have. The reason I ask is because I am familiar with Amon ra or recoveries based off of that. You might have clockworkmod recovery or twrp...

click down to wipe?
Before you wipe, make sure you are wiping only the cache and dalvik cache.
Dont wipe anything else such as boot, or system, etc...that would not be good.

I have the Amon RA 2.3... the one the directions of this thread say to do. So my first step is to wipe? Do I wipe from the recovery console?

Thanks,
