Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Now I'm receiving error 155 and when I looked it up in the readme it says:

ERROR [155~159]: IMAGE ERROR
One of these error messages will appear when you use the incorrect RUU to update and the image file size is larger than the Flash ROM size. In this case, download the correct RUU version and try again.

hmmmmmm interesting. just to make sure when you did step 9 the output matched what is shown in captn's guide, correct?

yup. Should I redo step 9?

also I tried using the RUU in both the bootloader as well as the phone's home page. they both came up with the exact same message.

nope it didnt. received the same message. is it possible to run step 9 again with out messing up my phone. becasue it has to be a reason why i can't get pass this step. (don't know if it matters but i'm currently using mikg rom)

I thought you went from htcdev to the Capt. method.? How did you flash a rom in between all that...or....you unlocked your bootloader some time ago and are now doing Capt method?

on page 1 of this forum Ocnbrze has his steps under step 1 subcategory 3 it has a way to flash a rom, then it goes on to Captain's s-off method.

ah, gotcha....reading my last post it seemed to imply that MikG rom had something to do with your issue...sorry....I dont think it has to do with your issue.
As far as running step 9 again, I don't know as I am stumped here.
Will running step 9 hurt? I dont think so.
Will running step 9 help? I really don't know....try it...
Did you make a nandroid backup when you went thru the guide?

You know who we need in here is the captain himself:D

Edit: unfortunately, I have no idea how to contact him just short of p.m.ing him...he does float in here sometimes.

Optimus hit the nail on the head.

if your not seeing this
attachment.php

Then its not unlocked to be able to use the zip
The bootloader will change from "UNLOCKED" to "LOCKED" if the misc partition downgrade was successful. If it still says UNLOCKED, than it didn't work.

Did you get any error message when running those commands?

I totally missed that and didn't think twice about it as Omen stated all went smoothly until step 10...
I can see now what you are talking about! THANKS CAPTAIN! :D

WOOHOO...I went back and redid all the everything starting with the recovery. It worked. I beleieve I must of did something with the superuser file, is it weird that it wasn't any errors that showed up during the misc partition, but it is updating the PC36IMG.zip file as we speak.

THANK YOU CapThrowback, Rxpert83, and especially Mikestony!!!!!

Thanks but I feel like I've ran you thru needless things after reading what Capt. posted about newoptimus' post. He really did hit the nail on the head! I totally misread/misunderstood his post and after what capt said, it hit me like a ton of bricks!
I'm really happy for you now and glad it worked out.!!!!:D
I think I'm just gonna go curl up somewhere.:(

TacoRoot method for htc evo 4g

Okay, I followed the instructions exactly (read them many times before even starting) and I had a couple of problems and read through this forum many times and while others have had the same issues I cannot seem to get passed them. I also seem to be having "all of the above" issues possible but I think they all come from the first issue I had and decided to try to go on anyways.

In the TacoRoot method I got to step 5 and got into the bootloader and selected recovery, got the red triangle with exclamation point, pressed vol up vol down and power buttons to get to the stock recovery menu. But instead of showing a menu it just rebooted. I tried many times and read other's post and did not find a solution so I just decided to move on anyways. Went on to step 12 without an issue but at step 12 when I did the
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
command it said "no such file or directory". I started over and retried many times and then again decided to move on anyways. Got to step 16 and it said checking PC36IMG a few times with a loading bar to the right then said something like:

issue with update
update fail!
do you want to reboot
<yes>
<no>

something like that. So I rebooted and my phone looks normal, no damage done. The bootloader still said Locked S-On. And just for reassurance: yes the flash_image and mtd-eng files are on the sd card in the root (most upper level, not in any folders). All files that are supposed to be in the android folder in my computer are there (adb.exe, AdbweinApi.dll, fastboot, and tacoroot.sh). And the PC36IMG file is named exactly that but is not extracted. I am not sure if it was supposed to be extracted, the instructions did not say if I should or not so I did not. But I am sure the last issue is because of an earlier one. I hope this is all the info needed to understand my situation and that someone can help me. THANK YOU!!!

never skip steps. the steps are there for a reason. if they were not important then they would not be in the guide. you need to slow down and take things step by step.

so did you do step 6 where you uncheck fastboot? most likely that is why you could not get to the stock recovery. you need to go there in order for taco root to work. basically taco root uses an exploit in the recovery logs of the stock recovery.

i would start all over again and this time if you run into an issue, please come here. DO NOT MOVE ON. folks here most likely can figure out what went wrong. once that step works then move on.

edit:sorry its late. so yes we need to figure out why you can't get to the stock recovery. in step 5. are you sure you are holding down the power+vol up and vol down at the same time?
