Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I am using an 8 gb sd card.

after I download the zip file I move it to the sd card. when it is on the sd card I rename it PC36IMG.zip. then I move the sd card to my phone and start my phone in boat loader.

am i doing anything wrong?
"boat" loader??? ha ha, I know, typo, funny--got a chuckle from that...no worries, I typo too:D

Try to rename it on the computer first...then transfer to sd card....might make a difference, don't know as the guide says rename it, then transfer to sd card.
It's good you have an 8GB card, as sometimes people have 2GB cards and then they have issues as you are having.

*boat* haha.

so i tried to rename it in windows first and same thing. should I redo the previous steps in the command prompt (the adb shell step) and go from there? Because up to the PC36IMG.zip step everything was moving accordingly, so i'm thinking maybe i should start from the previous step.

I don't think that's necessary if all went well up to the PC36IMG step...
So you renamed it in windows and that's fine just as long as no extra .zip is on the end...windows will hide that extension and if you add a .zip to the end, you now have 2.

Yup my phone is not connected to the computer and I have windows set up to show all extensions and it's only one .zip file.
I also downloaded the file, renamed it and yours should look like this correct?

Then after transfer to root of sd card (phone still plugged in), it shoud look like this...note that path on top to my sd card.. /computer/removable disk (E)/

I'm sorry if I'm asking this again but sometimes people inadvertently put it in a folder or not rename it correctly even though they swear they did k?

ok so your zip file says Compressed zipped folder. mines says jzip archive file

not sure if that is a reason, the other zipped files i've used have worked (i flashed mikg rom)

not sure what that is but....I could upload that file that I downloaded and renamed to my dropbox.
If you want, I could link that to you, no need to rename and try that.
Its the file that will be used with Revolutionary. (the way I rooted my phone)

Hello, you are in the Evo4g forums, not the htc incredible...the recovery you are trying to install from is for the Evo4g.....

Edit: I just looked for your phone and it appears there are 4 different htc incredibles, so I am not able to post a link for you...which incredible do you have?

o.k..just remember, no need to rename it as I already did that.
After downloading, check the md5.... 9fd4b1aaaef5c31f3e7c8f1c7f955d89
(md5 is straight from the download site)
That file, like I said is rootable with Revolutionary...k?
It took about 5 minutes to upload so, ymmv...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/m9nxydukaucj1ri/PC36IMG.zip

Edit: 50 minutes later... the suspense is killing me...either it worked and you are on your way to full root, or it didn't work and you are cursing me and gave up :)

dude- i've done everything you said and the exact same thing is happening. i'm at a lost. But like SUPER thanks for your time. i just don't know what is causing this issue.

Ok, since I'm kind of jumping in the middle of this let me try to get more information from you. I like to take a step back and try to get an overall view of where you are at.

I have gathered you are unlocked and you are trying to do the captn throwback method to gain S-OFF. Is this correct?

When you boot into hboot, what is displayed? (H-boot number) (S-ON or S-OFF (LOCKED or UN-LOCKED)

Where did you download the PC36IMG file from? What does it contain? (IE what is it supposed to be installing?)

What step in the guide are you on?

ok rx i have been following in and out. basically he is at the part where he has downgraded his misc partition and now needs to run a ruu to get revolutionary to work to root the phone. it is unlocked with s-on.

so here is my suggestion. instead of the PC36IMG ruu lets actaully run a RUU.
1.download this: RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed
2.connect your phone via usb, make sure it is booted up and set to charge only with usb debugging turned on.
3.now simply run the ruu on your computer and you should be good to go.

I could never get those PC36IMG.zips containing the RUU to load on my EVO 4G either, so I ALWAYS used the RUU. Never found out what the issue was, but it wouldnt take.

First off Thanks for helping...

now on to your questions

Yes I am using Captain's method and I am already unlocked (it reads un locked at the top s-on hboot# 2.18.0001 when you run the bootloader.

I downloaded PC36IMG.zip the file from Captain Throwbacks guide on TheMikmik.com, and it was for STEP 10

just use the ruu i provided in my previous post and run it on your computer.

just use the ruu i provided in my previous post and run it on your computer.
Now I'm receiving error 155 and when I looked it up in the readme it says:

ERROR [155~159]: IMAGE ERROR
One of these error messages will appear when you use the incorrect RUU to update and the image file size is larger than the Flash ROM size. In this case, download the correct RUU version and try again.
