Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I'm almost done with the entire root process and I think I got one last question. ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1 does not appear to give the same options as Amon RA Recovery initially recommended for use. (Unrevoked3 applied this). How do I re-install Amon RA Recovery without failure?

I received this when I ran the fastboot command:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

sending 'recovery' (3544 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.019s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.022s

the one initially used in the captain's method is a modified version of amon ra. you can get amon ra2.3 here:Amon Ra 2.3 and other older recoveries

it should work via fastboot. if not then you will have to use the PC36IMG method or use android flasher to install it.

Is ClockworkMod Recovery less functional or should I just keep that?

cwm 2.6 is the only cwm recovery i would recommend. it is the only one that is compatible with edify and amend scripts. after 2.6 cwm went away from amend. most flashable zips are amend scripted and wont work on most cwm recoveries except for 2.6.

the only thing is that i believe that cwm does not wipe well. however, if you wipe everything but the sd card at least 3 times before flashing the rom then you should be fine.

this is purely up to you. i love amon ra2.3 it is well over a year out and it has stood the test of time. so its your call.

Thanks. Yes, I did noticed that. I did not do the wipe process correctly because I couldn't match up the instructions. I'll try to get amon ra2.3 to replace cwm and then re-partition sdcard correctly with the matching instructions and then I'll try to re-install mikg.

Can someone supply me to a working link for android flasher? When I click on the link, it asks me what type of phone I have and I select evo 4g. Then a tiny url is provided and this link is broken.

Sure!
Try this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2rumt1cb0cx31z0/AndroidFlasher.zip

Download to computer, extract it and run

Download was perfect and the program worked but the flash failed. I believe my problem ended up being a wrong version which I discovered when doing the PC36IMG method for recovery:

I believe I was using the 5.07.651.1 version which hung android flasher and probably also failed the fastboot command in abd shell.

My version was 4.67.651.1 so the appropriate file worked correctly. My bad... Thanks, Mike!

Have had my Evo rooted for a year, used Unrevoked. Sitting here trying to root my son's Ev0, he's 2.18 so I'm trying the HTCdev method and am finding it much harder.

Question: Do I have to download and use the Android SDK? I created a folder on the desktop of my PC and I dl

 LOL

no you do not. i have the three files already for you in the guide. just use those compare to what the HTCdev site says.

Howdy ocn, glad to run into you:) I"m having a hard time here, feel like a n00b even though I've been rooted for a year ( you were the one that walked me through it).

I have the three files in a folder on my desktop. Trying the next step listed on the HTCdev site which is to run the DOS command to get the fastboot identifier token. I get an error message in the DOS window: "fastboot is not recognized as an external or internal command".

Any guess where I'm failing here?

do you have the right path running on the command window? what windows os are you running? you need to run the fastboot command from the android folder.

I did shift+right click on the Android folder and entered the command string. Am now getting the "waiting for device"message, searching through this thread to see if I can find what I'm doing wrong so as not to make you repeat yourself for what is probably the 100th time but haven't found it yet.

its all good. are you in fatsboot on the phone that is accessed by the bootloader? in the bootloader it should switch from fastboot to fastboot usb.
