Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I also saw in one of her posts, the option to format boot, system, cache, data...I would assume that would be good to do also before the rom flash?

Is there an option for a factory reset also? or just data?
I do not recall seeing any option to format system, or boot, just cache and data one reason I dont care much for clockwork.

I really feel bad about telling him that, I really do but I thought his own thread would be cleaner and get more attention....I know what your saying tho. :)
I know.

I don't see a separate option for a factory reset. Just the "wipe data/factory reset" and when I select that, I'm sent to confirm. Then after confirming action, it shows in the status that's under the selection menu:

--Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
Data wipe complete.

here is my suggestion, lets get you a new recovery right now, one that works very well has options for full wipe and doesnt need to be repeated.

download this

once that is downloaded go back to mount menu in clockwork, mount usb and take that downloaded zip and place it on the sdcard.
Now while it is on the sdcard(but not in a folder) right click/rename and name it
PC36IMG

Do you have the flash_image extracted from the zip and installed on sd card?

Yes, the flash_image file that's on the SDCARD is the extracted flash_image file:
49,804 flash_image.zip (original file)
76,044 flash_image (extracted file on SDCARD)

Is the # prompt a typical unix prompt? Reason why I ask is if I change directory to /sdcard or /mnt/sdcard, I can't see anything when running "ls". However, I can go to /data and run "ls" and I do see files - just not the /data/flash_image file because it can't seem to find /sdcard/flash_image therefore the cat command seems to fail.

I am uncertain on the taco root method so I dont think I can help you much there. However the # denotes it has to have root to work.

Ok when you have the file on the sdcard and renamed you will want to use the power off option, I think its in the main menu but it could be in the advanced.

when the phone is off hold the volume down button and press power(the idea is to get into the HBoot screen) which I think you have done previously so you shouldnt have any trouble

I followed the link and don't see any obvious download link for the Recovery. I see a link under where it says "Downloads" and after clicking that (the top link, not the one that says "Latest versions mirrored here"), I'm taken to where there's five different links to choose from to download :/

Ok, that's fair enough. I also tried the HTCDev method and did not have any success with that either. I believe it mentioned that it supported phones from 9/2011 on. I obtained my phone in May of 2011. Are you aware of people doing this on EVO 4G phones older than September of 2011? I'm going to call it a night shortly and try again tomorrow. I can certainly give better details then, but I tried I registered on HTCDev's site, confirmed the email, clicked on bootloader section and selected the last option which was "All other supported models" and the screen grayed out like it was doing something, but never completed. You could still see the screen as it was in some half intensity type of mode and you could exit out so the phone did not hang.

pm me tomorrow when your ready to go with it I did captain's method for a couple of people and it worked well.

Outstanding, thanks. I'm certainly willing to give that a shot tomorrow.

Okay, the file was downloaded, phone was mounted and the zip file has been placed on the sdcard and renamed PC36IMG.
OK after you get into the bootloader menu (Hboot) it will automatically check the sdcard and when it finds the file it will ask if you would like to install or upgrade or something, it will say volume up for yes. press volume up.

Done and done. Now it's saying Update Complete and asking me if I want to reboot device? Vol up yes or vol down no?

Awesome :) I've been greeted with a different recovery screen (Android System Recovery).
ok perfect, now you will see wipe, go into that, and as a bonus you dont need to use the volume up and down keys and power key for selecting.
the home key, far left will move up, the menu key moves down, and the search key, far right selects. the back key, goes back one screen.
