Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

when you get into wipe menu you will see, combo wipes, go to superwipe, that will clear everything, boot, caches, data, system and all temp files, it will do it all 3 times you only have to hit it once.

ok perfect, now you will see wipe, go into that, and as a bonus you dont need to use the volume up and down keys and power key for selecting.
the home key, far left will move up, the menu key moves down, and the search key, far right selects. the back key, goes back one screen.

Great! I'm in wipe now.

Edit: Okay, superwipe was selected and it's doing its thing now

**Superwipe is complete!**

ok hit the back button, til you get to the main menu
go to flash zip menu
choose zip from sdcard
find the downloaded zip you placed on there previously.

The rom/zip I downloaded earlier (MikG-v3.11), right? I'm guessing to select it?

Edit: Selected and now asking to confirm install of zip file

Yes, I have heard very good things about MikG I am more partial to pure android roms myself, called AOSP = Android Open Source Project.
some major differences and in looks too.

after selecting and confirming it will install.

after, or while that is installing download this on your computer

http://ca1ne.classictomatoe.net/downloads/uw-v08-sbc.zip

This is a kernel, helps the phone and rom run this one is made for the sense rom and should help with battery life and be over all quicker.
when install is done use the back button to the main menu go to usb-ms toggle/usb toggle with the phone connected to the computer. place that downloaded file on the sd card, then go back into the flash menu and install the kernel you just downloaded.

Then go back to the wipe menu, and use the first wipe in the combo list, C V
This will insure it boots up with no funny business.

The first boot will be a little longer then normal as it rebuilds all caches.

Holy crap!! It's freking working!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You and Mike are beyond awesome :D Thank you!!

Edit: Awesome! Thanks! I'm going to do that tomorrow (the kernel) :D For now, it's finally nite nite time! Hope you have a good night :)

Did you download the kernel and install it?

while not required(all roms have a kernel in them though the one with that rom is stock) it certainly helps.

ok, night I know what you mean.

Yes, the flash_image file that's on the SDCARD is the extracted flash_image file:
49,804 flash_image.zip (original file)
76,044 flash_image (extracted file on SDCARD)

Is the # prompt a typical unix prompt? Reason why I ask is if I change directory to /sdcard or /mnt/sdcard, I can't see anything when running "ls". However, I can go to /data and run "ls" and I do see files - just not the /data/flash_image file because it can't seem to find /sdcard/flash_image therefore the cat command seems to fail.
That could be it. Can you see the sd card when booted into Android? That will help us confirm whether it's a mounting issue.

Yes. While on phone using android, ES File Explorer sees /sdcard/ directory just fine. I see all the files including the flash_image file. However, I'm unable to determine who really owns it and what the real rights are. ES File Explorer reports "-rw" and if I go to the properties of the file, it shows (readable, writeable, and not hidden).

Can you also see the sd card on your computer when plugged in?

Yes, if I select drive from the selection menu instead of charging, I can see the files on the SDCARD just fine. That is how I copied the files to /SDCARD/ initially.
o.k...so the problem lies with step 12 correct?
And that extracted file, is not in any folder correct? It should be on the root of the sd card. Sorry for too many questions here..;)

Yes, that is correct. The file is copied to the root of the SDCARD ( /SDCARD/ ). If you want, we can go the route of HTCDev/Captain Throwback method. I'm making some progress on this method now. I've just pasted my key and am awaiting the email back from HTCDev now.

Well that is good too! After you unlock your bootloader, you cannot use tacoroot. If you want to be s-off, then you are correct and use the Capt. Method which is similar to taco. Thats the process I've used with 2 phones.
:D

Great, that's what I'll do. I'll keep you posted. It's amazing how responsive everyone is on this site. You guys are awesome!

Make sure you check your "Spam" or "Junk" folder for the e-mail, as sometimes it gets diverted there.

I got the email. The HTCDev has been successfully completed. It looks like that does a factory reset and my phone has been cleared out. It is great to have some internal memory back and it is nice having a clean slate again! I'm proceeding with your method to remove the watermark now.

Correction: I'm on the step 2: recovery for HTCDev method. Seems to be going well...

That Capt. guy shore do be a smart feller! :)
@Capt---you did a fantastic job with that guide about removing watermark!
One quick question, and off topic, what is you avatar a picture of?

Ok, I'm a little bit curious of what's going on now. Since completing the first phase of HTCDev, my phone boots amazingly fast, but I can no longer get to the boot menu by clicking on [power] + [down] to install recovery. Once again, the phone boots amazingly fast. Have you seen this? Suggestions?

Thanks.

I took that pic at Niagara Falls. I think it's saying not to climb over the rail, but I found many signs in Canada confusing.
