Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I checked my SD and there is only one PC36IMG.zip, Yes, I did all of the other steps go according to what is in the guide. I also did the mtd and flash image. I did not enter the SU command on step 12 becuase I was the following the instructions and then I found out that there was a screenshot of step 12 . This is a replacement phone cause my old rooted EVO 4g with hboot 2.10 sank into the water. :-(
Is it safe to retry TACOROOT method from step 1?

Thanks

well you need to enter the command for su in order to enter the other commands. you can do the tacoroot undo command which is the next step to stabilize your phone again. and once that is done you can then start over. but alot yourself sometime and follow the guide step by step. DO NOT SKIP A STEP. commands are very specific and need to be enter in the right order or it will not work.

Thanks OCNBRZE for your quick reply,

My phone is stable at this point but still unroot (hboot 2.18.00), I was able to enter the --undo command. The only problem that I had was trying to load the PC36IMG.zip (last step) Right now phone is working fine. I am going try the TACOROOT method again and make sure to enter the SU required in step 12.

Thanks again!

yes flashing in recovery
i goto flash from sdcard and select the file it starts and I get the following
--installing:/sdcard/superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E: Can't open /sdcard/superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.

I'm stuck here any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still having trouble in step 12.... I got the following error:

# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory

The image and mtd files were already saved on the root of the sd card. They are both uncompressed. I didn't have any error msgs while uncompressing the files so I am assuming that those files are good downloads.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The device can't be connected in Disk Drive mode when you're running those commands. Change the connection mode back to Charge only, and you should be fine.

Thanks CapTrownback -

Everytime that I get this error (Step 12) my phone is unstable, pretty much it stays in a loop. The further the phone gets is into the sprint 4G logo then it reboots and goes back to the loop.
That is why I don't have access to change the setting to "charge only" unless there is command to disable disk drive mode.
The only way to fix this is by finishing the guide all to way to step 13. After that my phone is stable but it stills have the Hboot 2.18.001

yep like capt said disk drive to charge. it is listed in step 5 of the guide. you need to slow down and go step by step.

just followed the first method to root, and it worked! Great guide. Thanks! Now, on to what rom to use...

i just want give a big thanks to ocnbrze and capthrowback for your assistance. After dedicating my time and carefully reading the instructions, i was able to root my 2.18/2.3.5 evo to hboot 2.10. I ended up using the htcdev and captain's method. I love my evo again!!!!

awesome guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now gO and get your flash on!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

it could be your popup blockers. i just tried this on my laptop and even on my tablet with no issues. what browser are you using?

Thanks guys, it was the pop-up blocker. Unfortunately I'm running into a few more issues. I'm trying to root my phone on a Mac using VMWare Fusion as a Windows XP virtual machine and when I try to install the HTC drivers it says that the installation has failed. Any ideas? Will I have to use a PC?

Thanks for the help.

yeah htc sync is not supported on macs. i have not found a work around for it, unfortunately. you might want to try it on a pc. however, the taco root does not need htc sync. not sure on how to set adb on mac, but i believe it should work as is.

Damn, alright. I'll try it with a friends computer and report back if I have any questions. Thanks though!

Ok, I have been trying to root my phone on and off for a while now. I've done it before but it's still pretty new to me. I had fast boot on up until now-thanks for that little tip by the way-and I was able to follow the instructions. Now that I am finished I have been trying to install certain apps that require a rooted phone, but, none of them are working. When I go into the bootloader it says unlocked at the top... I'm stuck. I have an HTC EVO 4G 2.3.5

Also, I installed the amon ra 2.3 recovery. Was I supposed to? Also when I put the "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin" command I don't get the unlocker screen on my phone anymore. Is that normal?

I know this website's information is very thorough and revised so I feel confident coming here for help. You guys got a good rep here. Any help is appreciated and cherished.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
did you flash the su file? if not you will need to flash it so that you can gain permission to the system partition. if you did then go into your app drawer and check to see if you have the superuser app. if there is not one then try and reflash the su file or you can try a custom rom. all custom roms will have the superuser app cooked in.

I have enjoyed reading and learning from all of you. I bought my first android one month ago, never even heard about someone rooting their phone. I dove into AF, wanting to get the most from my new toy, Huawei M835. I successfully used Gingerbreak to root my M835, Titanium backup, Root explorer, Es file manager, Es task manager, I went for broke. I was gifted an Evo 4G yesterday and want to root it. Problem is, it's got hboot 2.16.0001, Gb 2.3.3, and is completely stock. It has no service, so no worries about new updates (last one received 3 17 2011), but I'm dying to know.... Can I use Gingerbreak to root this version of Gb? I haven't flashed a kernel or rom yet, and am worried I might brick my phone. Will someone let me know if I could use Gingerbreak?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
no with gingerbread for our evo that exploit was closed up. so you will need to use revolutionary to root you. here is the guide you will need to use:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

Okay, I'm about to call it quits. I have followed the instructions to the letter and read this whole thread. I'm still getting caught up on step 12. I downloaded the flash_image.zip file, extracted the flash_image file (no extension) and copied it to the top folder of my sd card. YES, I switched back to charge only mode. I'm still getting a directory error. What gives?

Okay so after hours of trying to figure out what was keeping the tacoroot method from being successful I managed to get the bootloader unlocked using HTCdev. It's still hboot 2.18 with S-ON. I tried every method I could find to install a recovery image but nothing will work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The only other piece of information that might be helpful is that when I try to get to the stock recovery menu it says in yellow text "E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command"

ok there are two methods you can do it. you can do it via fastboot command with adb or you can do it via the android flasher program on your pc. have you tried those methods?

also where does it say that error?

Does the device say "UNLOCKED" at the top of the bootloader screen? If so, copy this over to the root of your sd card, and flash it in the bootloader: Dev-Host.org - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service

It's Amon_RA's v2.3 recovery.

EDIT: @ocn - I guess my method is #3 ;)

oh damn i screwed up.. in recovery mode i wiped everything from my phone and now when i try to start it up it just goes to the white screen.. anyway i can fix this problem?

hey there!

did you wipe your sd card too? Did you have any nandroid backups made? do you still have them either on your card or your pc?

I guess you still have your recovery. You should be able to either restore a nanroid or put a new rom on your sd card, wipe correctly and then flash it.

hope you didn't lose everything.
