Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Will following any of these methods allow me to keep my data such as contacts, apps, pictures, etc...I am planning on using stock root. Thank you! :)

can I still go through with this process on my evo 4g if I use the latest htc sync version 3.0.5617 and not the specified version in the guide?

thanks

No unfortunately your data will get wiped during the unlocking process. However it is only the data that is in you're phones internal memory.the stuff in you're card will be saved.

And yes the latest HTC sync will work

So close....

I'm on step 12 of Tacoroot. Phone is looping. In the command prompt window, I do get # after typing 'adb shell' but without being prompted by $ and typing 'su'

What exactly is su?

Edit: When I type su it says: su: not found

Step 12 of the Tacoroot method doesn't say anything about "su". You might be looking at the wrong instructions. Did you print out the instructions you were going to use, and review them before starting? You're supposed to have the #, and then proceed with inputting the commands listed.

The picture is just there so you can see the output of the commands listed in the instructions.

I did review before starting, but I noticed someone asked about the screenshot before and was told they needed to enter 'su'. Anywho, I figured that part out.

What I seem to be having problems is locating the PC36IMG file on my sd card now. I downloaded, renamed and moved it but when I use bootloader it doesn't seem to find it.

Bootloader now says:

Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<vol up> Yes
<vol down> No

So, I'm extremely new to this whole root thing, I've always done the OTAs, so I'm at 2.3.5, hboot 2.18.0001. I started following the root guide, went to the HTCDev.com site to unlock the bootloader (whatever that means, lol), pulled and installed the battery. Started fastboot by pressing vol DOWN and power at the same time, hooked it up to the computer, charge only. Downloaded the SDK zip from the linked site, as well as HTC Sync, and the newest Java Runtime Environment. I right clicked on the desktop, new, folder, named it Android, just as the instructions say. So I opened the .zip SDK folder, ran SDK Manager, installed Android SDK Platform Tools and Android SDK Tools. I'm assuming that since the lowest revision number is 16, I wont need to update it any further. I went to the Platform Tools folder in the android-sdk-windows, found all three folders that it told me to put in to the Android folder I created. adb.exe, fastboot.exe, and AdbWinApi.dll.

Now this is the part where I get hung up.

I opened the command prompt by going to Start-Run-cmd Enter
-command prompt window opens-

Step 7 says:

Navigate to where you unzipped the ZIP file and go to the folder you just created (For Example: If you created the folder in C:\Android, then you would type in Command Prompt: cd c:\Android).

So I typed cd c:\Android in the prompt, and got an error message saying the path isnt specified or something like that.. I tried every possible incarnation of what this step is telling me to do (cd ENTER c:\Android...... tried every different way of entering it). I cant get past this step.

PLEASE HELP!! I'm banging my head against the wall here..

try holding down the shift key and move the curser over the folder and right click It should give a menu and select run cmd from here. I think that is what you need

Ok so I just tried moving the curser over the folder , hit shift and right clicked, and just the normal open explore... blah blah blah came up. Nothing to do with command prompt. Thanks for your help though...

Im on win 7 and when i do that the third one down is ...Open camand window here....

OK. I'm running Windows XP on the desktop downstairs cause I didnt want to put all this crap on the laptop.. But I guess I'll be downloading it all again on the laptop with Windows 7. I'll be posting results shortly..

The command is
Code:
cd\Android
to change to the "Android" directory.

Thank you, Mikem0269
Thank you, CapThrowback

Ok, so I got the bootloader unlocked, and began installing amon ra 2.3 recovery. I think I successfully got it on my phone.. Is there any way to tell? I'm still on the bootloader screen, and it says -
*** UNLOCKED ***

TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.12.19

FASTBOOT USB

-and then all the options.. Bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader, powerdown.

So I guess what I'm asking is.. is there any sign that amon ra is on my phone? I did follow the instructions on the guide to the T..

And if there's nothing else I need, I guess my next step would be to flash a rom. I went to the website and downloaded the vr superwipe. But I don't know how to put it onto my card. Since I'm in Charge Only, and in bootloader, is there a way to put things on my sd card? What is the preferred rom to download these days? I'm really just trying to have a smoother running device and get rid of all of this Sprint bloatware, underclock when the phone is off and overclock while I'm running. Again, I appreciate the help.. and any forthcoming help is greatly appreciated as well.:D

Hit bootloader and there should be an option for recovery after that. Select it.

If you are able to get into your recovery (it will say amon Ra 2.3 at the bottom) then congrats!

If you have a red triangle with an exclamation point, you still have the stock recovery

Awesome! So I did what you said and now I'm at a screen that says Android System Recovery. With all the options...

I downloaded the ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip and put it on my desktop. I'm still lost as to how I'm supposed to put things onto my SD card.. I've read quite a few of these pages, maybe I'm missing something. I don't like being redundant and asking questions that have been asked before, but as you can tell, I'm not quite up to par with the lingo and processes in the Android rooting community.. lol

In recovery, there's an option for USB-MS Toggle. That's so you can connect your device to your computer in USB Mass Storage mode, and copy files over to the SD card. That's one way you get the files from the computer to the phone for flashing.

Ok. I hit the option for USB-MS Toggle. Found my device on My Computer (Removable Disk (E:).

I dont see the SD card in the list of things on my phone, however.

Should I be seeing the sd card in the list of folders in my phone, or is everything I see in the disk THE sd card? Can I just drag and drop files into the removable storage disk? It may be a ******ed question, but I'm just looking for SD CARD and I'm not seeing it. Thanks for any help..

Also, what ROM should work the best?

The Removable Disk that shows up on your computer IS the SD card. It is also what you're browsing on your phone when choosing the flash a zip file. And yes, you can just drag and drop the files from the computer onto the SD card (removable disk).

If you create a folder while it's connected to the computer, once you turn off Mass Storage mode, you will see the same folder on your card when navigating for a zip file. I have all of my ROMs, Kernels, Radios, etc. in separate folders on my card.

ROMs are really a subjective thing. Some people like the style of what the phone came with, some people hate it, and others want more options. My initial recommendation is for you to try MikG v3.11. See how you like it, and that'll give you a taste of what a custom ROM is like. You can then decide which direction you want to go with your next ROM, or you can stay put :).

Thank you so much for your help, Cap'n..
I ended up going with this AlterROM version 0.0.1 from XDA Developers since it utulizes GOLauncheras the UI and I'm already used to that launcher..
I also ended up making new folders for ROMs, Radios (whatever they are...lol) and Kernals (again, no clue what that is..) and copied the ROM into the ROMs folder. I also dragged over the vr superwipe while I was at it. Now... how do I create a nandroid backup?? Sorry for all the questions, but I really am root-arded... Again, thank you for your help.. I'm just scared to death of creating a $400 paperweight...

So I think I just answered my own question. I turned off the toggle, went back to the recovery screen, selected backup, nandriod backup. Now its asking me what I want to backup. It already has boot, system and data already seected. Should I select the rest (cache, recovery, wimax, sd-ext and android_secure)?

No reason to backup cache, recovery, sd-ext, or android_secure, at this point. You'll want to do at least one backup that includes WiMax, and keep it somewhere safe. After that, you only really need to back up the others. Personally, I have a nandroid that includes only WiMax in case I ever need it. That is also an option, and then you don't have to include it in your regular backup.

If you use the apps2sd built into Android, and then need to do a nandroid, you'll want to include android_secure.

If you get to the point of partitioning your SD card for a2sd, then you'll need to include sd-ext.

Cool. So I just flashed the ROM, loaded it on the phone and decided that I would like to try a different ROM. This is a little bare-bones for me. lol One thing is.. I would like to use the apps2sd once I find the ROM I want (going with MikGv3.11 this time). So in order to run a new rom, I would select the ROM I want, download it, go to Bootloader, Recovery, toggle on MS, drag and drop the ROM onto my card, make a Nandroid backup, and this time include android_secure in the backup, but this time, not wimax, since I did that before. Then I'll wipe my cache, dalvik cache and data. Select the next ROM to load and then I'll be good to go, right? So when do I get to using the apps2sd app? Do I load that afterwards? And how about overclocking? And swype?

THIS IS WHAT I SEE.. PLEASE HELP

I'm no expert, but I think I can help you here. Your screen indicates that your bootloader is LOCKED. You need to get it unlocked to get it into recovery mode. Try following the HTCDev guide. You'll have a much easier time with that, I think. The red triangle, if I'm not mistaken is telling you that there isn't a recovery loaded. Hope this helps..
