Root [ROM] GB-CMod7-Beta

I'm just full of ideas has anyone tried compiling the optimus s kernel with the config from the optimus m and flashing it on the m ? Why would you do this? Cuz if it works then you would have an overclocked kernel with some modification

I thought about that myself, I myself cant do that though. Would be very cool.

I've tried it with some oc v kernels which are modified s kernels but haven't gotten good results. The one that I did get to boot didn't have touchscreen functionality. Oddly enough the on off screen animations worked :)

Did your phone come with 2.2.1 or 2.2

I'm not 100% sure this will work for your phones since ro.secure might have to be turned to 0 in the ramdisk but the es file explorer root explorer functions work on cyanogenmod. What does this mean no more paying 3.99 for root explorer.
I just tested this on my optimus v and it works
download es file explorer
open it
go to settings/root options
select root explorer and allow it superuser permissions
select mount file system

If all goes well then you just saved 3.99
Ok, now you got my attention. Well, all of you had it before today but my ears perked up when I saw that.
I've had Es File Explorer from almost day one and did not know it could be given root privileges or have the ability to change file permissions.
Tongue out & tail wagging. :D

That's good that means that we should be able to compile an overclocked kernel using the source from the optimus s and it will work. I've had a feeling about this for a minute now just been lazy. Also if someone with the know how and about ten minutes wants to try the cyanogen rom for the optimus p500 (optimus t) but using your kernel let me know if it boots.
Why why why your asking that's a step backwards. Nope if that works then we can start compiling cyanogen from source. Right now basically to get cyanogen on the phones you have to wait till aosp releases another rom and apply the changes to that ( your still on 2.3 he got 2.3.4 out just saying ) also you have to wait till he fixes certain things. It's kinda a long shot but it's definitely worth it.

I've got the know how but it will take me longer than 10 minutes cause the only internet I have right now is tethering :) ill try and start downloading it tonight and see if I can get to it tomorrow. If someone else wants to try you need to unpack the boot.img in both a working rom and the test rom and swap out the zimage and then repackage it and place it in the test Roms zip

I had to switch back to RomZero.

It took me about forever to recover my sdcard. Nothing was reading it, so I ended up using a program called GParted that runs off a live disc. Even that was having a time mounting the card but I pulled it out of the reader and stuck it back in and finally i was able to format it.

Haven't had a problem since being back on Zero so I can only assume this rom did the damage. Just don't know how.

this is why we need irc, if you are all willing to get in it!!!

then we we come up with results we can post good threads :p

i have had some experience in making kernels, it's really not that hard. but does require you to be on Linux somehow. I can't vouch for making kernels for these phones of course, but at least it's a Linux kernel... can't be too much different.

now... the only thing I would need is some MORE information, lol. I've been searching and searching for info on android and it's just too scattered.

first thing is first I suppose.

new thread for kernel questions?

T3084 thanks for the help I was able to open the rom and put all my apps in it then when I flashed the rom everythings already there and got more internal memory to.

sometimes, you can recover(wiping all data :3) a card or harddrive if you can destroy the partition table.

#example in linux
lets just say the drive is sdd
there are two partitions, sdd1 and sdd2
you could back up all data on the drive by issuing and later use some programs to help recover files from this file
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdd of=~/sdd-backup.img bs=1M

then destroy the partition records
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd bs=512 count=1

this will essentially delete all the records of the tables, but the reason for doing this is sometimes the programs can't read these records and decide to just ignore the drive or hang on it.

after you do this *COULD* rebuild the partition table or you can just simply reformat the disk

no problem!, but just to remind you, these apps will most likely not update as they are not really meant to be there :p

if they don't, you can always just push the apk into system ;)

Ok, my patients has ran out, from roms google docs cant find and no way to download them no matter what link i try to wiping my phone and losing my root. Im over this flashing and rooting crap. I have a custom recovery, but thats it. I just downloaded the ROM so the link is functioning correctly. Yes you do need to be rooted to flash a custom ROM.

Has anyone else noticed that when the alarm clock goes off the screen stays black? I had to do a battery pull to get it to turn off.

I put /data/app support in that rom so anything that you add to /data/app in the rom zip should update just fine. They have problems updating when they are included in /system/app

u used the link on the first page of this thread right? i just tried it again, no dice. i guess im going to go sit at mc donalds for a bit tomorrow and hijack wifi and try it again. i guess ill need to get whatever it takes to root this phone AGAIN too. any other things i should download that ill need? i wanna spend a bit of time and be done with this. this is seeming to be more frustration than i expected. Hopefully the payoff is well worth it! btw ya'll thanks for putting up with my crap and the help offered.

Are you downloading on a laptop? or on your phone?
May make a difference.

As to rooting your phone your in luck, I see that there is a one click solution to rooting this phone now.
You on version 2.2.1 I am guessing.

ive tried dl with both phone and laptop no good got to looking around on my laptop though already had a copy of the rom and gingerbreak musta been drinking when i dl ed them cause i dont remember doing it lol

Alright I've been tearing this rom apart trying to get down to cause and effect with this crazy GPS stuff. Seems that on the stock rom some very proprietary libs, bins, and jars are used to make the GPS function and in the gingerbread rom its open source generic stuff that works but doesn't work quiet as well. Need to find out where all of it is initialized and I might be able to make some changes. Logcat here I come.
