Root [ROM][PORT] Sharp ROM 2.2.2 for the Triumph (Updated: 12/16/12)

Can someone summarize quickly the advantages of this ROM over the rooted stock ROM? Is it faster, better battery life? What are the biggest advantages? Sorry if this information is already lodged somewhere upthread.

Both the Sharp & U9000 (actually, almost any non-stock ROM) seem to be much more smooth & fluid and "snappier". I can only tolerate the stock ROM with an overclocked kernel, & even then, the touchscreen insensitivity really can get to me after a while. They really are like the stock ROMs the MT should have come with in the first place! I think they also have a few extras, like built-in tethering too.

I just got the phone used from eBay. The GPS lock time seems fast to me. I'm not having any issues. However, the accuracy seems worse than my previous phone, the Optimus V. I just tried tethering, which does not work in the stock. I was able to tether the Optimus V even on stock ROM using quick settings. I think tethering is a must have for me, so I will be installing this ROM soon. I want to spend a few days with the stock ROM first so I can understand the performance differences.

Definitely try out stock first. After having the OV, I can say that the MT will not be as easy to tether to without installing a CM7 ROM. Search the MT forum for "Froyo MTU" and you'll see that you need to open the command prompt (Windows) and type in a line or two to make the internet fully accessible via wireless tether (not sure about USB). I only used the feature a few times on the OV, but it was handy.

Is it normal to see "Emergency calls only" on the upper right corner of the screen when unlocking the phone? Seems to go away after I unlock the phone....

I don't even see that on mine. I know some unlockers have that as a feature so you don't have to unlock the phone to use it in an emergency.

OK just wanted to say thanks for this awesome ROM, a vast improvement over the stock.. keep up the great work. It goes to show the hardware is more than adequate for this to be a 1st class phone, it's the software investment that lags.

GPS-miles better. I didn't even know it could be this good.
UI responsiveness much better
Camera apps -great
Clock app -much better
Ability to tether, yay!

I don't use much else right now, this is great!

Edit: I have one problem and that is all my incoming sms messages are marked as arriving 7 hours earlier than actual. I found a fix on the market SMS time fix. Has anyone else encountered this, is there a less intrusive way to fix than running a third party app?

Sorry guys, I been real busy lately, can't seem to get a day off.

A couple of things.

1. Any chance for a shut down menu? (shut down, reboot, recovery)
2. Making the app drawer settings stick. Every time I open it, I have to reset it so that the apps are in alphabetical order.
3. The home screen is driving me nuts. Is there any way to set it as a different screen and not just the first? I'd like to center the wallpaper on the middle screen but the home takes me back to the first screen to the left.
1. The shutdown options are gonna be a major pain to get worked in. I just use the notification toggle app linked in the second post, it puts the toggles in the notification area and it has a full reboot shutdown menu.
2. It doesn't seem to have an auto arrange option, but the only time the apps should not be in order or have gaps is when you uninstall apps or install new ones as they get added to the end. Other than that they should never move until you sort it, it's just part of the launcher.
3. From what I am hearing in these last 2 questions it is the launcher, it may be best to try out the U9000 ROM, or try out a different launcher from the market.
Hope this helps.

This is a bug, after you put the phone in airplane mode it will say that til you reboot. But it does not affect the operation of the phone.
Simple explanation:
There are a bunch of different networks(CDMA, GSM, EVDO, Wimax, etc.) built in to this ROM, so when it is in airplane mode it sends shutdown signals to all the networks but our phone doesn't have them. Basically it is just not recognizing that it is all the way connected because it never got a signal that all the other networks are available or not. That is also a major hurdle in getting the custom shutdown menu.
Simple question. I'm running version 2 I want to load version 7. Can I load over version 2 without following the whole procedure?
I definitely would not suggest it. It will be worth restarting to get to at least Ver6 or higher. There have been quite a few things worked out since Ver2. I don't think MMS was worked out til Ver3 or 4, or maybe it was the network location, but you are missing out on quite a few things.

I haven't seen this problem. Have you checked the time and date settings on the phone? It may not be set to automatic or the timezone may be incorrect. Have you tried a reboot, I know, but I have to ask? It sounds like a time issue in the system, if it was exactly 7 hours off. If you just flashed the ROM I would suggest backing up and going through the whole install process, just to be sure.

If anybody has any more questions feel free to ask.

I've definitely rebooted the phone several times so I don't think that's it. In Date and Time settings, Automatic, Set Date, Select Time Zone, and Set Time are all grayed out. Automatic is checked, Time Zone is set to GMT-0.700, Pacific Daylight Time. Set Time mirrors the current time.

I really don't want to reflash since I've installed most of my preferred apps. It's not too big of a deal to run the SMS Time Fix app if I have to, I will continue to investigate a less intrusive fix...

Have you changed your PRL? Any Tweaks?

Found this:

I can confirm that simpy installing chompSMS on my HTC Legend from Virgin Mobile Canada (unlocked and on Fido in Canada) fixes the SMS timestamp issue. Not only does it fix the issue within chompSMS, but it fixes the issue in the default SMS client for the Leegnd. I have turned the notifications off on chompSMS and only use the default client. Simply having it installed fixes the issue. No clue why or what it does, just know it works.
Maybe you could install and check, then see if it still works after it is uninstalled.

The only problems I've had with messaging is getting, or who ever I am sending them to, gets it hours or even days later. But that happened with my intercept, so I figure it is just VM.

Haven't update PRL or done any other tweaks that I know of. I can confirm that installing Chomp SMS fixes the issue somehow. Sadly, uninstalling it reverts to the old behavior.

I installed the Sharp Rom. It installed without problems. However, i got two side problems related to this new ROM:

1) I couldn't fix the MTU/Tether fix, it just wouldn't allow it in CWM for some reason

2) When i try to restore my old apps/data in ROM Toolbox pro, it just doesn't restore the apps (i'm restoring apps+data+market link)

Anyone know what's wrong? Thanks!

Excellent rom BSydz. I got lost recently and I am sooo grateful I had no issues with the gps. Weird thing was that I was barely getting a signal to make a call as i was in the middle of nowhere but my gps worked fine. The waze app did freeze but after rebooting my phone...i was able to find my way.

Oh, i applied the voice mail fix...everything flawless now! Just did several back up of this rom as it is sooo stable.

Thanks dude. :)

I left this Rom when I got my nexus 7 because I wanted tether. I found a work around though. This Rom will tether with Bluetooth if you have BT on the other device. Foxfi on the phone, pdanet on the device, and use the Bluetooth setting. Works fine

Shout out to bsyds on the work done on these froyo drops. I've had a used triumph coming from an extremely stable OV (I wish the screen were bigger), in any case this is definitely the Frankenstein of the VM phone line up...but I went with it because it allowed me to keep the $25 grandfather. I did not know what I was getting into :)

In any case after seeing the miserable stock ROM, away I went into CM7 land w/ the g60 variants. They were great except that the wifi/BT often collided, GPS would never work properly, and no deep sleep. That just makes it unusable. I was about 10 minutes away from dropping $229 on the evo v, but I said ok lets give it one more try, because that means I have a Frankenstein wimax phone and now I have to pay $35 a month for the same 80kbps service in Buffalo (no wimax here).

Enter Sharp ROM.

I've been modding since day 1, and have been a dev since the early 90's back in the SunOS 4.0 days :). In any case I did some due diligence, and decided to start with the following framework:

1. 5.2.0.7 b_radom CWM
2. Version 7 ROM
3. try 3 kernel
4. Holo launcher + (the best IMHO).
5. Titanium Pro for BRS
6. JD Pro for data flow management and wifi management
7. Better battery stats (for monitoring)
8. Auto memory manager (for changing memory thresholds)
9. No frills CPU control (to change min to 122 Mhz)

Away I went. Clean wipe and I was up in 10 minutes. In come TP apk and I was restored in another 20 minutes (lots of apps).

I noticed right away GPS was not working properly, so I went and turned on AGPS and Eph and locking inside in 20 seconds (never worked before even w/ me tweaking gps.conf in CM7). Locks outside < 10 sec.

I installed holo launcher plus (I paid because the dev is awesome) and I was just left with the ugliness of froyo status bar. So I put a few widgets in there to make it workable.

Overall in the last few days it goes into DS, bluetooth works flawlessly and wifi is getting killed by JD Pro (I still have some tweaking to do), but not a ROM issue.

Battery life can easily make it > 1 day with normal usage and aggressive daytime/nighttime JD data clamping, and the memory thresholds have kept the launcher screens flowing quite well.

The only issues I have are:

1. Holo locker doesn't work properly. I put in no lock and it still is hit or miss. I removed it for now.
2. Better battery stats doesn't work at all. It looks like the service won't start. When I have time I will look at catlog to figure that out.
3. The stats available to froyo are not very granular so deep inspection is much more difficult.
4. With interactive governor, games kill the battery much faster (approximately 20%) than the CM7 ROMs. With lack of stats, I don't think there is much I can do.
5. Sprint network sucks, and not wimax. I am 1 mile from a tower and the coverage is miserable. NV has still not come to my towers :). If coverage were better my battery would last days :)

I got my Nexus 7 tablet this week, and OMG this thing blows away an ipad. Integration w/ my corporate exchange is flawless--much better than my iphone. It just shows how far in one year the tech that is possible...from this Frankenstein to the Nexus 7.

Thanks for the feedback. The MTU script is not a flashable zip, you have to extract it to a system folder to run it. I suggest init.d folder, but I forgot to put a place holder in the folder so when it built the ROM it didn't include it, so just create the folder in system/etc, and extract the file there. You will need the new kernel in the second post, and wifi has to be off cause it turns off the 3G, for the script to work. There is a lot of info on the last few pages about tethering.

As far as restoring apps goes I have not seen any problems, but I don't use ROM Toolbox. It could be that it was a backup from GB or higher and something is not compatible or in a different location. Somebody who uses that app will have to chime in.

Hope this helps.

The tethering works now, both wifi hotspot and usb, it just requires the new kernel and you have to run a script to set the MTU. So after the kernel is flashed, the only thing you need to do is run the script or use terminal to enter one command before you tether. I plan on reworking the kernel and trying to get the MTU set from the start, before I make a new release to incorporate these fixes. But until I figure out how to set the MTU, the extra steps will need to be taken.

Thanks for the feedback. I suggest dropping JD for this ROM it really doesn't need it and it seems to cause issues for some people. I have also noticed that with GPS Ephemeris enabled, it kills the radio signals, but doesn't seem to drop them at all with it disabled. BetterBatteryStats works flawlessly for me. For the governor I usually use on demand, it seems to do a good job over all for me. I'm glad you are enjoying the ROM, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for all of the feedback everybody, it definitely helps to improve this ROM as much as possible.

OK, so I am kind of at wit's end here. I have used a lot of the different ROMs on these boards, and I keep having two issues that are making me want to break my phone.

First off, this seems to be a great ROM, I am enjoying its fluidity, but the same thing that happened on G60 style and Tickerguy's CM7 iterations is happening on this one.
One - my music does not show in any app. Music, AmazonMP3, Winamp, etc, etc, etc will not show my music on my SD Card. On Amazon MP3, for example, I can redownload music to my device and it will show in all programs as being on the device, but once I reboot, it is gone again. The music is still there, as shown by the different file explorers, but apparently invisible to the music programs, what gives?

two- and this might just be endemic to this somewhat POS phone, but whenever I player Scramble with Friend, with any of the ROMs, the game and then the phone will freeze up and need a battery pull (or will cause a random reboot a few minutes later) to be functional again. Is this just crappy programming on the game? Something to do with the phone?

I really am enjoying the Sharp ROM, but is there any way to add to the notification bar like 2.3 has (Wi-Fi, GPS, torch, etc.)?

Thanks guys, and keep up the great work!

Sorry to hear about your problems.

Issue one, I've never seen, but I'd put my money on it being the SD card. I suggest copying all the files from the SD to your computer, then formatting the card with the phone, either while booted, or in recovery if you want a swap partition. That may fix issue two also. Other than that it could be a drm thing with amazon. Sorry but that's all I have right now.

Issue two may be the SD card also, cause I just played the game and had no issues what so ever, though I haven't played for an extended period of time. The only other things I can think of is if you restored the app and data, or some recoveries seem to not clear data correctly, depending on which ROM you are using.

As for the toggles, check out the second post, or search for notification toggle in the play store, it includes shutdown and reboot options as well.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I don't think very many people are having those issues.

dunno if you have aleeady found it but i searched sh8188u roms and found a stock variant from taiwan thats 2.3.5...it has the kernel source and dowload fo the rom itself...just wondered if it might be possible to do the same thing with it you did with sharp 2.2 stock...and also im going to check to see if the sharp or huawei variants have working ics or jb roms.

Hey,it's been pretty quite around here, but I guess that's good. I reloaded the latest version a week or so ago, did not use the kernel update and things seem pretty smooth. Had a blip or two with Bluetooth- it would not automaticaqlly connect to my home phone system as it should - but it seems kind of random. A reboot seems to fix it when it does not connect, but other times a minute or two after getting in the house it's connected.

Got to say I really like that feature on my home phone, i rarely keep my cell with me at home, it's plugged in charging. any time a cell call comes in all the home phones ring. I use a voip provider for the home phone so the cost is negligible, best solution for me. Plus if I want I can clone my home phone to my cell with various voip apps.

Wow THANK YOU.
I have never rooted or installed a ROM before and admit I was very hesitant in trying but thanks to the awesome info and guidance found here I have now made my Triumph usable. I was also able to make the voice mail fix work (the 2nd attempt).
My thanks to all that put in so much time to make the rest of us happy with our below acceptable production phones.

Thanks, but you'll have to be more specific. If you provide links it would be easier to tell if I've seen it. I suggest looking at the first few pages, alot of that info is there about this. Also this http://androidforums.com/triumph-all-things-root/527058-triumph-experiment-thread-caution.html. If it hasn't been covered then definitely post a link, we may be able to use some stuff from it.

I love the Sharp port ROM! I recently wiped v5 and installed v7 (managed to skip v6 because v5 was working so well for me). I'm also using BSydz's custom kernel for v7 try3. A couple of changes caught my eyes and ears:

The notification area shows the time on the right edge, and when I pulled down the notification area, the v5 Sharp ROM displayed the date on the left edge, just like the stock Motorola ROM, but the v7 Sharp ROM does not. Is that set by the theme? Is there a setting I'm overlooking to turn that back on? I'm surprised how quickly I've gotten used to seeing the date when pulling down the notification area.

The v7 Sharp ROM started making a sound every time the phone was turned on and shut down, independent of my custom startup and shutdown sounds. The thread about BSydz's U9000 port mentioned these could be notifications of the SD Card being mounted and dismounted, and the sound in the v7 Sharp ROM do coincide with SD Card on-screen notifications.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I am still working on this. As a matter of fact, I am about release a new version today or tomorrow hopefully. I fixed the date color issue in the status bar and am trying to find the sd notification to disable it. I also am going to build a new kernel today with hopefully better touchscreen drivers. If anybody has any thoughts on what they would like to see in this release, let me know. I haven't figured out the voicemail issue yet, this is more of a minor update to clean a few things up. I don't have a bunch of time this weekend, so if you have any suggestions how to implement your requests it would make things alot easier. Thanks again for all the feedback, it really helps to figure out what issues may still be present.

Ok. A little bit of an update. I've been tweaking the ROM. I took bsydz reco and turned off ephermeris. GPS still works great. I also removed JD for now because I was having a CPU scaling issue. I fully reflashed to make sure I had a clean image, and added Moto build.prop.

For some reason, something was setting the minimum CPU scaling frequency to 245... I went into the system folder a low and behold it was set to that. SO I did some inspection.

On your try 3 kernel /etc/init/init.qcom.post_boot.sh runs as a service via init.qcom.rc and was forcing the cpu governors and speeds to those levels. I simply commented out those lines in init.qcom.rc and setcpu was able to set things correctly.

I also noticed that the toolbox/getprop does not work, so a lot of the scripts that are in there are misbehaving.

Wifi does not turn off automatically on lockscreen, so the phone never goes into deep sleep, which is a huge problem. I went and looked at the code quickly and noticed the wifi unload script was not seeing screen lock, so I will look around some more to see where the event comes so I may trigger the unload.

I'm also starting to play around w/ smoothass governor, however I see it bouncing all over the place and I am not sure how this will impact battery yet. I will let it run for a few days and monitor the CPU states.

I just spent a while trying to make a flashable zip to put in the MODs section but nothing I did would work, I rewrote the updater script 5 times and it looked like it worked but still sound on boot. I had to use root explorer and follow these instructions, http://androidforums.com/triumph-all-things-root/380511-how-silence-boot-ups-shut-downs.html, the flashable zip on that page did not work for me either.
It is located here /hidden/data/Power-on sound/.

Can i Just delete the sound and not have one at all?
