[Root One Stop Shop]Roms, Kernels ect..

When it comes to modems...is there any that are better then others?or are they particular to each build?

I always use the latest available. I haven't found any to be better than the rest. Just remember the 2 exceptions i put in the op. I would suggest keeping a jb and fl24 modem on the sd card so you can always flash it if you have the wrong modem with the wrong rom
.

Thanks SelfElevated, ROOT was difinetly a breeze....I should be all set....making Nandroid back up now :) not to figure out whats next. Hopefully I can get some advice on ROMS. There are SOOOOO many out there.

I'm glad you went ahead and tried it. All of us that got the phone the day it came out that met up right here had to go through the same unease of the root guide. Before there was actually a guide. And it's only so scary because it's so long. LOL that's why I broke down the steps of what v your actually doing. It makes it so much more simpler. All the roms are good. Can't think of one that sucked LOL. You already kno which one I prefer as its in the op.

I just recently got this phone (2 days ago) and i was going crazy trying to get this thing rooted.Im coming from the transform ultra, and rooting that fairly easy but this was a pain in the ass and i thank you SelfElevated for making this guide for us,i have the latest CWM installed right meow and im sifting through roms and im also DLing all the files for each rom along with the rest of this stuff u have helped me find for this phone im happy as faq right now ty again bro awesome guide and keep up the great work each community needs more peeps like u.

woot I got root, used the FG31 .tar worked great. was on FL24

one thing i did notice is (i might have missed it) no one says to put the SUzip on ur ext sd card, pull ur card , put in a card reader and move the zip file from ur PC to ur SD card, remount card in phone and start root guide.

Good I'm glad your all squared away.

As to the su zip I always say download it straight from the phone. That way it is on the SD card. There are a few things that need to be modified on the root guide. I haven't heard back from guy yet tho

Yea they all look really nice...I did notice though that there was a thread for fixing MMS. I think this refrence GA10 as the rom with the issue....Do any of the other roms have any issues like that (wifi issues, mms, text messaging, 3g etc)? I know sometimes that stuff can be glitchy.

I think i am going to try Jellyverse and Blackbean

The MMS issue isn't really an issue at all. It's because the ROM is made for sprint and you have to change 2 things from the APN settings so your MMS settings work. There aren't really anything I can say were wrong with any of the roms..

However jellyverse is a great rom but you lose your custom recovery. Read the top of the kernel post in the op. It uses the fl16 repack kernel. It's a great ROM though. Read read read. Or skip those leaked tw ROMs. I waited a long time before I tried them. I'm uncomfortable not having a recovery !

I'll take that off my favorites. I foresee stuff lol

Yea....That make me nervous too! I may stick with the aosp JB ones....you know coming from the warp were everything was download a zip and flash...updating the rom on the gs2 seems to complicated.

Im seeing refrences to flashing the ROM, Gapps, Modems, Kernels etc....is it not just as easy as down loading a zip and flashing in recovery?

Hopefully all these questions will help other who are a bit lost as well, very glads you put this thread together.

Yea I recommend sticking with the AOSP ROMs for awhile. Since your on stock right now you do not need to flash a modem to use aosp jb ROMs. You would only have to flash a modem if u choose to use a leaked TW ROM.

And as far as gapps that is your Google apps including the play store. The only reason its in a seperate zip is because its illegal to include Google apps in a aosp ROM except in 2 states. LOL not a joke.

Its really not much to install a aosp ROM. Just follow instructions and enjoy.

Any thoughts on removing bloatware on stock rom? Think it would be something to inclue in your thread?

I know on the prevail there used to be a list of bloatware that was safe to remove and removing some others could cause issues. Have you heard of anything like that for the GS2?

Maybe some who just wants to stay stock and have a leaner phone would fine it beneficial......lol ill have to give you a break after this....I swear weve been going back and forth for like a full day now....thanks for all ur help.

Tried to install black bean and the installation fails.did a factory reset, wiped cache and dalvic cache then tried to install rom zip from sd card and the install keeps.aborting. Could having the zip in a folder within in the sd cause anu issues?

Did it say status 7 error? I had that happen to me the other day flashing from a different rom. Wasn't stock though.. I actually just flashed it fresh from stock an hour ago. But I flashed the aosp kernel then rebooted recovery then wiped data and cleared caches and it was all good.

Try this kernel. - http://db.tt/Sft8LyXO

Don't try to boot the phone after flashing this as its a jb kernel it just won't boot. Only reboot recovery! Then wipe data and both caches. Then flash ROM and gapps and now u can boot the phone...

If for some reason it aborts again just flash the agat kernel zip I had u download. Then reboot recovery. And you can either boot phone or restore your backup. P.s agat takes forever to restore. It sits on checking md5 checksum for a long time. Don't worry it will do its thing

This is all becoming way more trouble to me than its worth. Think i am about to just say screw it. get rid of the bloatware and leave it at is. Im not trying to brick an almost 400 dollar phone.

If that's what you want to do. But it seems more complicated than it is. You just have to understand how things work. Its a little different than the warp because here we are working with different android versions. If you were to flash that jb kernel I sent u and just boot the phone it wouldn't hurt a thing. It just wouldnt boot the ROM.. But your recovery will always boot!!! Thats why its important to have files on the SD card. You will always have a recovery as long as u understand which kernel you need to flash what or restore what. As long as you have that agat zip and the backup you made yesterday you will never be stuck.

Practice makes perfect. We were all Leary when we first started and we didn't have people with experience to tell us this is how to do it. Or Don't worry. We had to feel like we were taking chances with no reassurance.

Most of us came from the warp. Lol I know this seems more involved but it will become natural if you understand how things work. :( sorry the process seems scary

The reason for flashing kernels is because you need the recovery in the kernel. Unlike the warp the recovery Is inside the kernels for us

But staying stock is fine too.

Trust me konceptz this guy knows his way around phones. He won't steer you wrong.

lol believe me i trust everything he is saying....I just don't trust my self lol...I just dont want to do something wrong and screw it up....(plus right now my phone is my only internet so if i cant the phone back up and cant download anything else to help me get back to normal) so let me just double check...Selfelevated< ur saying that you think trying to flash the rom while on the agat kernel is causing the issue and that I need to flash the other kernel, then boot back into recovery, they do a wipe and install rom then install gapps then reboot.

If thats correct and if the rom installs correctly, does that mean that i would have to install a new kernel through odin if i ever want to install another rom?

Most of what you said is correct but its the agat recovery not e kernel. And no you will not need to use Odin just to leave that rom. You can leave that ROM just like you can leave this one. By flashing through recovery

Do u have another phone you can call me from? I can talk you through it step by step

I can't thank you enough for everything you've helped me out with these 2 days.looks like I'm pretty much all set. Running BB and I gotta say I don't know if I'm going to have the need to flash any other ROM.This thing is amazing! Phone is running faster than ever and looks great..I'm in love with the inverted look. I think the only things left on my to do list now is getting back my app with my titanium back up ..trying to get WiFi tether to work...it wasn't working when I just tried to use it....and maybe doing away with the triangle but I'm not really to worried about that. Thanks again I really can't thank u enough.

No problem. I'm happy to help. I'm glad we got you squared away. As for WiFi tether. The ROM has one built in. Open settings and click more under wireless networks and you will see tethering and portable hotspot. Its even WPA so u can use a password on your hotspot.
