Root Root Optimus V without computer

Sorry for being so late again, work has kept me pretty busy lately, I need a vacation, my boss says take one, but everytime I do plan one, something comes up. ;)

OK, I just did this myself, first time I've put xionia recovery on my phone instead of clockworkmod, and it worked without a hitch.

1) Download the xionia recovery image file to your phone, the one I posted in post #86 above. The file downloaded on my phone as a txt file, probably due to all the extra periods (.) in the filename. I renamed it to xionia_recovery.img

2) I moved it from the download folder to the root of the sdcard to make it easier for typing

3) I opened Terminal Emulator and typed in the following three lines:
su(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_recovery.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

My phone rebooted, and I'm now looking at a black screen with a blue bar at the top and blue text. At the very top in White text it says Xionia CWMA v1.2518.4 and at the bottom it says the same thing, everything else is in light blue.

Next, I choose backup and restore, checked if it could find my current backups under the restore selection, and they were there. So I created a new backup for safety.

Everything seems to work fine this way. Let me know if anything fails for you.

@Andy, thanks for posting the link to the file with the how-to in it. The code they used is for how to install the flash_image binary, the above posted method should work fine so long as flash_image is already installed.

Now to test an install of Harmonia done completely on the phone.

First I went to the Harmonia thread page #50 and downloaded the ROM.
http://http://forum.androidcentral.com/1007547-post493.html

Once downloaded, I opened Terminal and typed in:
su(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

Once in recovery, I did the following:

1) selected backup/restore and did a backup (you can delete your old backup before you reboot into recovery if you're out of space, just dropbox it first for safety)
2) wiped cache
3) selected advanced, and then wiped dalvik cache (ignore any errors here)
4) went back to the main menu, then selected factory reset
5) selected install zip from sdcard, then selected the Harmonia zip file (located in the download folder)
6) once installation finished, went back to main menu and selected reboot system now

It took about 4 minutes to load, once loaded, I clicked on the market icon, entered my google account info, and everything worked fine.

Let me know how this works for you.

Now to test restoring to my aospCMod ROM using the backup created with xionia recovery. First I had to install Terminal emulator from the market.

1) open terminal and type
su(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

2) in recovery, selected backup/restore, then restore, then selected the backup I made before flashing Harmonia.
Note- It can take along time checking the md5 sum, be patient, let it work. ;)

3) back at the main screen selected reboot system now

The phone rebooted, and I'm back to aospCMod with all my apps and settings, and everything works fine! ;)

Alrighty then, I'll probably try it out in the next couple of days. I took the day off from phone stuff and slept most the day away, lol.
Good to see everything *can* work-thanks for trying it out for me, Jerry. :)
I think I'm going to get rid of everything I downloaded and start fresh, just in case.

If it doesn't work this next time, I might think about calling it quits, for the sake of my sanity, so cross your fingers for me, lol.

Thanks again, to everyone, and goodnight :)

Hey JerryScript, I think you just created "Nuub" proof instructions on how to install a custom ROM onto a "V" without a computer. You should make this procedure (complete with the red underscores and returns) a sticky!!!!! EDIT:the flash_image in the zip file isn't necessary? The stock flash image will work?( I hate being a "Nuub" sometime). Sorry bout the goosechase it really looked like it would help. I got a bad habit of being a little to helpful. AND WOW to think, you don't have to use a computer now to have a custom ROM on your phone. Great work, and its "NuuB" proof to boot. Truly amazing!(the "Nuub" proof part)

I totally agree with Andy! This (not the thread specifically, but something like it) should definitely be a sticky! Before this, I (obviously) had no idea you could flash a custom rom/recovery without a computer.
Make it a series: rooting w/o computer (gingerbreak), custom rom/recovery flashing w/o a computer,...next in the series-partition sdcard for use with links2sd w/o computer? Anyone wanna take that one on? ;)

Oh my gosh you guys!!!! IT WORKED!! It actually worked!! Hahahaha! Thank you everybody for all your help! You all deserve *hugs*!

:) :) :) :)

Now to restore my apps w/ titanium backup....shouldn't be too bad, phone is fast now! :)

Partition an sd card with out a computer, now that would truly be something.
I agree whole heartedly that someone should make a sticky on rooting without a computer, and flashing a recovery, and installing a ROM(all the JerryScript "Nuub" proof method).

Glad you got it working, I have to admit I was sweating a few times there, hoping I didn't have to take up a collection to get you a new phone! ;)

Now that you know how to do it, you can go into recovery, make a backup, save it to dropbox. Then, try a different ROM, and if you like it too, make another backup and save it to drop box. Anytime you feel like switching ROMs, you can just download the appropriate backup from your dropbox, go into recovery, restore it, and you don't even have to bother with Titanium Backup, everything will be as it was when you made the backup, apps and settings and everything.

Have fun flashing, but remember:

Had to repost this since you liked it soo much ;)

Congrats, now have fun and enjoy your phone. There are a lot roms out there to play with. Try a few and see which one you like best. Also, if you look around the forums you can find a lot mods you can make to the status bar, notification area drop down, and more. Just remember, like jerry said, always make a backup before making any changes. If your not sure how to do something, ask. : )

I probably will try some different ROMs...after i get a bigger sdcard! My dropbox is being difficult -i can't choose the backup folder to send, i have to go file by file (usually 5 of them) and it straight out refused to upload the biggest one. I'm hopefully going to get some extra money next month, and 16gig sdcard is at the top of my list :)
I'll probably be back here asking for advice on transferring data from one sdcard to another, so watch out! :)

I did su (enter) and the mount -o line just to hit enter and get "mount: device block required"

NEVERMIND, ITS FIXED AND WORKING!
All you guys were helpful.

Hmmm, I thought Gingerbreak put flash_image on your phone.

Download flash_image, unzip it with a file manager, then type the following in terminal emulator: (spaces are typed as _ )

su(return)
mount_-o_remount,rw_-t_yaffs2_/dev/block/mtdblock5_/system(return)
cat_/sdcard/flash_image_>_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
chmod_755_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_recover.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

I tried EVERYTHING on my optimus v because I was stuck in Fastboot mode (blue error screen) and I rooted with Gingerbreak and had Superuser, clockworkMOD and busybox installed and for some reason my reboot into recovery wouldnt work when I used ROM manager to install a custom ROM.

I was getting sooo many errors with recovery, blue screens, and tried adb and terminal emulator with like 5 diff ways to input commands and then, finally...i fixed it.

For anybody stuck like I was, all my searching paid off!

Download TERMINAL EMULATOR from the Market, and make sure you have the flash_image file and either the recovery-RA-GNM-thunderc-s-1.1.0.img (which I used but renamed it recovery.img) or the xionia_recovery_12518.4_virgin.img file works, have them saved to your sdcard and have the flash_image in your /system/bin (i renamed my xionia file to xionia_recovery.img because I wasnt sure if I wanted to use recovery or xionia) and then go to your Terminal Emulator app, type this exactly:

$su <hit enter>
# chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image <hit enter>
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img <hit enter>
# reboot recovery <hit enter>

And your phone will then reboot into recovery ;)

:side note:
if there isnt a _ or / or . then the other spots are spaces!

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you, I had a couple of employees call in sick, so I worked 14 hours today, and another long one to look forward too tomorrow. ;)

Looks like you have the files in the right places, the only thing I'm not certain about is if you have the proper permissions set on busybox and flash_image, but they should have been given proper permissions by gingerbreak.

Anyway, let's give it another try:

su(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_reocver.img(return)

If that all works ok, then you can type in:

reboot_recovery

Let me know how that goes, then we will move on to flashing Harmonia
