Root or not

Me too, but...

I retried the process, and get to

Install/sdcard/update.zip (depreciated)

now I get the message

E: Can't Mount SDCARD.update.zip
Installation aborted
 
Ok, just went through process again, and it finally said

Install from SD Card Complete

bust still same power problem.
 
I rooted today, downloaded SetCPU and did a nandroid backup.
Now what?

What I'm primarily looking for is better performance (less lag) and better battery life. Will SetCPU help on both? I guess time will tell.

To those who are rooted, what did you do after rooting that gave you that "WOW" feeling?
 
What update.zip did you install, exactly?

Anyone else out there smarter than me: could the kernel have been affected by the root process? I'm running out of ideas on this power thing... never heard of such before.

Did you install an overclock kernel? Ultimate Droid 8 overclocks to 800MHz and is so snappy that I am no longer motivated to go past that with a custom kernel. Use "Autodetect" in SetCPU and scale the minimum back low so that the Droid will clock on demand. That will give you performance and good battery life.

My WOW moment was getting away from Verizon's OS and installing a custom ROM. Ultimate Droid 8 seems to be the thing to have these days, until Bugless Beast 0.5 comes out...
 
I think the best solution for now is to try to go back to stock. Thanks, are there any simple instructions to do that?

I haven't tried installing a kernel yet. Just pushing the stock OS to 800MHz. It does seem snappier with less lag, but have only played with it for about 20 minutes. I also set the minimum to 125MHz so after a day or two we'll see how that helps with battery performance.

The .sbf file you used MUST have been corrupted somehow in the download. I could recommend a custom kernel to see if that fixes your power issue, but if you want to revert to stock and let VZW look at the power issue (under warranty) then go to

I am so sorry you're having so much trouble with this. We all hope for 100% success rates, and I have no doubt that we'll be rooting and ROMming your phone successfully in the near future.
 
I think I'm going to take the plunge tonight or tomorrow... I've found the root guide and a rom I think I want to go with (for now). I'm still not 100% sure on how to go about choosing my kernel. Is that needed for custom roms?
 
No. ROMs come with their own kernel. UD8 overclocks to 800MHz... there are other kernels that go much higher (at the risk of stability and battery life). No two Droids react the same to the same kernel, so choose several in case of boot loop.

Make SURE you have a current backup as soon as you have a custom recovery in place, and that you can access recovery through x+power, not ROM Manager. Start everything on a full battery charge and you'll do fine.

I did an x+power and went into SPRecovery. Had an option to do a nondroid restore (had previously done a nondroid backup), so this means I'm covered if anything goes wrong?
 
Great! You're almost there. If you have a nandroid backup, then you are ready to install a custom ROM. For SPRecovery you'll have to move the ROM to the root of the SD card and rename it "update.zip" for it to load.

I'm assuming that UD8 = Ultimate Droid v8.0
It sounds like a great ROM.

I downloaded "UD-eXtreme-8.0.0-sholes.zip."
It that the correct file?

Copy to /root, rename update.zip, X-power up and install?
 
Make SURE you do a data wipe before installing it. It will save you a LOT of potential heartache. I wipe thrice just to be sure I get all those little bits. After installing the ROM, reboot the phone (first boot will take awhile, don't panic) and let the phone sit for a few minutes after you log into Google for your apps to repopulate.

Yes, but here's a solution. Download MyBackup from the Market (1 month free trial, worth upgrading to paid after that).

You can back up all your text messages, bookmarks, etc. If you have your contacts and calendar synced to google then you don't need to back up those things. I choose the "online" backup option but you can also backup to your SD card.

First backup your data with MyBackup, and I also recommend setting up a profile with AppBrain.com and downloading the AppBrain app from the market. Then sync your apps with AppBrain as a fail-safe in case your apps don't repopulate after installing UD8 (they should repopulate within 10-15 minutes after rebooting into UD8 and setting up your Google account since all apps are tied to your Google account). This way a list of all your apps is saved to their website and are very easy to reinstall if necessary.

Now boot into recovery, perform a factory reset (might as well wipe the cache partition as well), then install the UD8 zip file.

With MyBackup you will have all your data (text messages, call log, etc) back within a few minutes.
 
You should be prompted to activate your phone upon setup. shouldn't lose your bookmarks. (I haven't) You will lose text though. I use mybackup.
