Root root without computer?

So I just upgraded from my Hero to an Evo (woot!) and was wondering if there is a way to root it without using a computer. My computer is currently dead and although I'm familiar with rooting and flashing (on my Hero) I don't know what options the Evo has. I'd really like to get rooted soon but, have no computer. If this can't be done just say so, if it can, how!?

I've not heard of doing this without a PC, but would be interested. The iPhone for a short while had a one-click jailbreak simply by visiting a website so theoretically it is possible but that changes of course due to software patches / updates.

This was only possible with unrEVOked 1 and it did not include nand unlock.

I did mine without my computer. Go to the unrevoked website on your phone browser, click to download the right thing, then use something like Astro File Manager (or similar) to move the zip file to the right part of your SD card. Reboot into recovery and install the file from your SD.

Edit: This is how I did Unrevoked Forever and it worked without a glitch.

See that's what I'm talking about, I knew you used to be able to do it all with the phone like this (still can with the Hero) but hadn't heard of anyone doing it with the EVO.

Can anyone else confirm this as a working method of rooting? Not that I don't believe you, but this is kind of a big deal to trust one voice over all else.

theres no reason why it wouldn't work. if you want to install any custom roms, tho, you best be on a fast wifi connection because the file sizes are north of 170 megs.

Lol yeah but I did this all the time with my Hero on the mobile network, usually took about ten minutes for non aosp roms. ShouldI try Unrevoked Forever or regular Unrevoked?

Unrevoked 3.21 however does root the phone and you can run apps with root privilege without having to run a custom ROM if you so desire. This also turns S-OFF and unlocks the NAND, so you can install custom ROMs if you so choose.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok a couple more quick questions, which download should I use (linux, mac, windows) and how do you flash it without already having a recovery image?

I only used the Windows one so I can't tell you about the other versions.

I ran Unrevoked 3.21 with just the reflash.exe, using the process as described here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies-extras.html

My Evo is rooted but running the stock ROM. If you want a custom ROM, you can download any of the custom ROMs from XDA and store it on your SD card. Then you can apply the custom ROM from the hboot screen, after you've done the Unrevoked root process. I recommend you do a full NAND back up first before you load a custom ROM. That way you can rever to the stock ROM easily.

You could very well be right. I was on 2.1, full root with Unrevoked 3, and then ran Unrevoked Forever. I do have superuser permissions, NAND, and S-Off.

No offense taken ) But as an FYI, this is also how I've gotten all my ROMs and kernels onto the phone. I never go through my computer to do it. I download right from my phone browser to my SD card and then put them in a folder I made on the root of the SD card. I called it FlashFiles. Then when I go into recovery, I install from SD card, pick my FlashFiles folder, pick my zip, and away it goes.

It's worked with everything I've ever tried to flash. Pretty sick.

What are you on, 2.1 or 2.2?

I did use Unrevoked 3 through my computer to root 2.1 back in August sometime.

BUT 3.21 is out there now and I don't know if that is different or how. The Unrevoked Wiki was really helpful to me when I was first rooting with their stuff, it might have some more answers. I can really only speak for the one way I've done it.
