Root ROOTING For Dummies

so far so good, i think i had it chewing too much with all the apps trying to download and reinstall at the same time. guess it'll be slow and steady from here on out. does tb have a multiple app restore option or is it one at a time as well?

there is an option to do a batch to do a batch restore that you can do. i haven't really used all that much. i don't keep a lot of apps anyways to warrant a batch restore. hit the menu button, but becareful and not to backup or restore system. you will have all kinds of trouble if you do.

so I'm trying to get all my apps back and i thought it would be easier than what it's shaping up to be. 1. most of my apps seem to be having problems installing, and 2. it appears to be taking alot longer than normal for them to download (even 1 at a time, and I'm on wifi).

don't know if it's related or not, but after installing custom rom (mikfroyo) am i supposed to flash all the radios or something? would not doing that affect the above issue?

Read this post in the Mikfroyo thread related to this. Click me

I use batch restore/backup and it works great for me. With batch restore you can actually go through and pick and choose what apps you do or don't want. I restore my apps with data and haven't had too many issues. One time I had some issues, but I think it had to do with a2sd stuff.

Hi everyone,

I got an evo about 10 days ago and I love it. 5 days ago I went on eBay and bought a root for $30 with unleased ultra rom (Please dont call me a dumbass because I bought something from the guy, I know I am dumb because I should have just asked you guys on here) Anyways the Rom looks pretty neat but I really want to go back to the original factory settings with maybe just a plain root (No specific ROM) The guy who I got it from wants me to send him $25 for him to show me. If you guys can please help me I will be grateful to you.
Thanks

Here's how to unroot.

Why don't you just flash a different ROM? And I have no idea how you "bought" a root for $30. Do you mean you paid him to root it? My suggestion for you is to unroot and reroot following this guide so that you learn how to do it. Then flash whatever ROM you want. I'll give my standard suggestion MikFroyo, but here's a list of many available ROMs, which btw is in the OP. If you like the stock look I think Sprint Lovers is what most use. Personally I hate the stock look so I run as far away from it as I can.

Thanks for the quick answer! Ya I paid him $30.25 for his root. He made a video for it which made it easier. He uses a program called autorun. Pretty simple in just 1 step. Anyways I tried doing a hard reset by going to into settings, sd card and then factory reset. Because the Rom installed it went back to same rooted version. So will this way work for sure? Hopefully:)

It should. I don't know anything about what he ran, because this guide is the only way i've rooted and I've rooted, unrooted, and rerooted. Also rooted my wifes evo with this method. Fail proof.

Good luck.

I agree with Nick. I have used this method at least 6 times with no issues at all. It is simple and easy to use. I would at a minimum read through the Rooting for Dummies guide so you understand a little about what was done to your phone. Unrooting is an option. If you are looking for something that looks stock but retains root, I would try the Sprint Lover's rom found here:

[ROM] 02/25/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.2 | 3.70.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One - xda-developers

Again reading about rooting and what you can do and how to do it would be the best advice at this point.

Does it matter what ever ROM is on your phone or this method will clean up everything?

Isnt the thread that we are talking in rooting for dummies? Or some other thread?

the link that xtremedays provided is for a custom rom. it is basically a stock rom. so if you want to stay rooted but want stock then go for it. however, i would definitely read the rooting for dummies guide like suggested. it is the best comprehensive guide out there. also in the after rooting section, there is plenty of info on roms and kernels that you should read as well.

It is indeed the Rooting for Dummies thread. :) I was referring to the very well written guide in the first post about rooting and after-rooting. It has a wealth of information that in my opinion is priceless when it comes to flashing and customizing the phones we have invested in.

Thank you sir. I will read it all in detail. I just hope I don't screw up my phone as i very dumb in rooting.

If you follow the guide, it is highly unikely that you will screw up your phone. If you run into problems, feel free to ask. We are here to help.

The Evo is as close to impossible to screw up as you get. Just read that guide word for word and then ask questions and then read some more. I tried a couple of other root methods I found on youtube and had no success, mainly because they were outdated. Then I stumbled onto this and it is easy as sunday morning. ;)

I would suggest don't have someone do it for you again, because you should know how/what is going on with your phone.

You know where it gives a few of these steps, can you help me make sure I am doing it right?

  1. Connect via USB. There is an option for this in both Amon RA and Clockwork. (What does Amon RA and Clockwork mean?)
  2. Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sdcard. (Do I have to remove the unleased ROM I have on the sd card before putting this zip file on there?)
  3. EJECT THE PHONE FROM THE COMPUTER and then turn off USB in Recovery (How do I turn the USB off in Recovery)
  4. Power off the phone and reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. (Is there a option for bootloader on the white screen?)
Thank you again

1) Amon RA(preferred) and Clockwork Mod are both custom recoveries that are installing in place of the stock recovery when you run unrevoked. These allow for making backups and flashing roms/kernels.

2) you do not have to remove anything from your sd card unless you have a room issue. You just need to make sure that it is the only file named PC36IMG in the root(top level, not in a folder) of your sdcard.

3) There is an option in recovery(Amon and Clockwork) to toggle the usb connection for access to the sdcard from a pc.

4) If you power off your phone then hold volume down+power at the same time, it will take you to the bootloader(white screen with hboot version along with some other info).

Are these just questions you have come across while reading or are you actually to the point of needing to do these things?

No I am just reading about it in the XDA forum. Still very doubtful if I can even do it. Man the words that they use in there are flying right over my head. This zip that zip. Man I am slow at this :/

1. Amon Ra and Clockwork are recovery methods to flash/back up things.
2. I would leave that on there for now. Might also create a back up of your current settings with AmonRa or Clockwork
3. Depending on the recovery method you choose, it will probably say something like usb toggle.
4. When you power down the phone hold down the volume down button and turn the phone on. When it comes on it will be in bootloader. Which is a white screen. It automatically searches for that pc36 file

XDA is more of developer forum and uses alot of language that most of us are not familiar with. Matlock has done a great job with the Rooting for Dummies guide.

A zip file is just a bunch of files compressed together in a package that the recovery in the phone(Amon and Clockwork) can open and install on the phone. These would include possibly roms, kernels, radio updates, themes, and misc modifications.

These are the steps you need to do. You probably need to start at step 1 because odds are unrevoked3 was used to root your phone which has unrevoked forever included in it. If you follow that you can't go wrong. Make a backup of your current setup. Instructions in the OP for that.

  1. Make sure you have downloaded the files linked above. Do not extract them
  2. Connect your phone to your computer via USB and change to "Disk Drive" by dragging down from the notification bar.
  3. If you have NOT used Unrevoked Forever, skip to the instructions below. If you have, transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the root of your sdcard. Do NOT transfer the PC36IMG yet. It'll only cause a hassle and make this take longer.
  4. Once complete, power off the phone
  5. reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
  6. Depending on what recovery you're using, you need to flash a zip. Select the unrevoked-foreverson.zip that you just transferred and complete the flash.
  7. When complete, power off the phone. Reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. If it says S-ON at the top, select RECOVERY and skip to step 9. If it says S-OFF, repeat steps 5-7 Until it does.

◄●If you have NEVER used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
  8. Power off the phone and reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
  9. Connect via USB. There is an option for this in both Amon RA and Clockwork.
  10. Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sdcard.
  11. EJECT THE PHONE FROM THE COMPUTER and then turn off USB in Recovery
  12. Power off the phone and reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen.
  13. It should check the PC36IMG.zip and then ask you YES/NO to apply the update. Press VOL UP for YES
  14. Once complete, Press VOL UP to reboot.
  15. You are now unrooted!

No I didnt use unrevoked3. It was a program that was designed by the guy on ebay so it will be the first time I am going to even download unrevoked.

So basicly read this current thread that we are writing in or is rooting for dummies another forum?
