Root ROOTING For Dummies

Don't worry about what jerseyiroc says... There are a lot of haters regarding unrevoked. The reason that it, is because unrevoked will not release their source code to anyone. So everyones argument is that no one really know how exactly unrevoked obtains root. And also people believe doing the manual method of rooting (downgrading to 2.1 and then obtaining root) teaches you something... Its teaches you how to copy and paste! lol Regardless, unrevoked has proven to be a useful tool to obtain root, which happens to be super user friendly ad easy. Don't fret you are already rooted so the hard part is over with. Now move on to flashing roms and enjoying yourself!! :D
 
And one more thing to put your worries to rest... No matter what method you decide to use to obtain root, once you are rooted you are rooted. Roms and kernels or whatever else you want to flash aren't prejudges about how you rooted... lol So again don't worry you are good!! If you find you are having troubles with anything jump on here and ask away! There are plenty of people here ready to help!

edit: just installed warm flash, loving it, haven't dabled w/a new kernel yet, this seems fast already. Worked like a charm no errors, *knock*on*wood*

No prob! How about some love with the thanks button?? lol jk! Just keep it mind always remember to wipe before flashing anything... its a pain when you get stuck in bootloops and have to redo everything! Good luck buddy!:)
 
Quick question, i am a noob to Evos.
Had a blackberry before and messed with its system.
I am alittle afraid with this one. I just bought it 10 days ago and its been upgraded, while i was at sprint store.
I read the disclaimer here, and it stated there is not a fix for the new version.
Here is my system and software number.

Android Version 2.2
Kernel Version 2.15.00.09.01
Software Number 3.30.651.3

I have read many forums and have heard so much back and forth info. I would like to root it, because i want control as everyone else that roots their phone, but i have heard many people talking about errors, i would like a smooth phone and not have to worry about fixes all the time. Any recommendations?
I would like it reliable.

Just like any software, it's never 100% reliable. Turn-in-point, the HTC Supersonic RUU (the OS on the device), it's not completely reliable. The first day I got the EVO it force-closed on most of the stuff I used. But I wasn't worried. It's a Computer, you should expect errors from time-to-time.

As far as if your planning on ROOTing, and installing custom ROMs and KERNELs. Then you should definitely expect errors in most cases. Remember though, the Developers of these Custom ROMs are excellent at what they do and any errors they find, are usually corrected ASAP.

There are many ROMs to choose from, and as far as smoothness and reliability, it depends on the Developers. And you won't really know which is the best, until you try them on your own and see how it feels and how you like it. Any questions or concerns, please ask. This thread has been nothing but helpful to all of us with all these great Memebers!

If you do decide to root you are going to have to follow the guide below as 3.30.651.3 is not compatible with Unrevoked at this point. Just incase you weren't aware! ;)

Do the guys that write UnrEVOked hang out in any forums? I'm just looking for some updates on when they might have a new version out to deal with these new versions. I'd rather not try the manual method from XDA since this is my first Android device. And it looks like you are only able to use the sprint lovers ROM at this point. I don't want to be impatient, but it's hard to wait when I've waited this long lol.
 
The folks at unrevoked are super hard to get a hold of... as far as an eta I would say you'll never know until its released! Unfortunately...

There is a Skype .apk out there in cyberspace that was intended for Verizon who, at the moment, has exclusive rights with Skype. It is what I have on my phone and 3G is enabled. I honestly don't remember where I got it. But if you look around, I am willing to bet you will find it.

The Verizon app vforced all VOIP calls through there network, thus using plan minutes. Are you saying you can call with Skype Out over 3G and not use plan minutes?
 
I honestly do not kow the specifics. But I do know that it does work over 3g AND wifi. Verizons app only works over 3g and our app only works over wifi. This one works over both. I still think that it will use your minutes though!!!

If it uses you minutes, you would likely ask, "What is the use then?". My use in this configuration allows my wife to be signed on to her phone/computer all day and allows me to be able to reach her through skype from Brazil...which is where I am right now. I don't care if it uses minutes. But she does have Skype in her pocket(purse) and so do I...which is what makes good use of this regardless of minute usage.

This is NOT where I got mine so I cannot confirm it's quality but I am willing to bet it will work fine. Search the entire forum for "skype apk" in quotes and you will get many hits and discussions.

Where are you in Brazil dude? My wife's Brazilian and her family heads down there a lot. Using skype from cellios would be a nice option to contacting us back in the states. Thanks.
