Root ROOTING For Dummies

Hello all,

Im still having trouble getting the 3.29 update on to my phone, i used unrevoked forever and everything went fine, but now when i try to install the update using quickboot and going to the install from sd it says it cant, has anyone else had this issue. I was wondering if it was from when i took off the bloatware, i uninstalled it instead of freezing it before i knew that i could freeze them. any help would be awesome. thanks

Just install a current ROM and it will have the update. I never did any updates, started with android version 2.1.

I installed the latest fresh and now I'm on 2.2 and my software # is 3.3

There is nothing new except software version (meaning no updated radio), which are included with the rom. There is no reason you would need to flash an update what so ever.

BIG THANKS to Matlock!!! I've debated since september to root or not. Well after some sweaty palms last night I did it and couldn't be happier. A friend of mine rooted his hero and was excited that I did my Evo. One day, not being today or tomorrow I might make the jump and flash a rom and a kernel. Is there a guide saying whats better than another cuz I'm happy with the way this phone operates but maybe I'm missing something

Check that I found the xda list

I know! It's Pinned! Ain't it great!

Now, here is our problem. In order to STAY pinned, we need to kick it into high gear and keep this sucker active with great and helpful information; from all of us.

UPDATE:

How many of you are having trouble understanding and are afraid to take this big step to Root, because you just can't get it? Well.. I'm here to help. Other than you having the option to Read ROOTING FOR DUMMIES, but you can Message me as well if you have a question or concern.
But here is the big update.

Soon I will be starting on ROOTING FOR DUMMIES Video Tutorials to help those who just can't learn from reading and need a visual adaption of it to kick start them, and of course for everyone else there.

What I need from all of you, is help on the best methods to create Video tutorials. I've written out many How-To's for our lovely Android devices, and this is a completely new direction for me. So any suggestions would be great.

I am also looking for another HTC EVO 4G device to try out other methods on so I can keep mine I use for personal use active while I do my thing. Hopefully cheap too. ^_^

I rooted my HW version 003 with 3.30 with the guide you posted in the OP [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF - Like a Boss Edition! - Updated 11/20/10 - xda-developers (Used version 6 I think)

Everything worked fine, I have s-off and full root, I was able to do a nandroid, and was able to flash sprint lovers rom and everything was running fine. About to wipe everything and install the latest sprint lovers rom, so i will let you all know how it goes. :)

Might have to go this route...

Until unrevoked complete their new update, that is probably the best way to go.
Like a Boss Ed. seems to have gotten more stable.

Can I flash a new recovery without having to wipe everything? I'm having some stability issues with ClockWorkMod, it's acting strange in recovery.

Also, can I flash a different kernel without flashing the ROM again?

Yes and Yes. :-D

Cool, thanks Matlock.

I flashed Ziggy's kernel that he built for Calkulin's EViO 2 ROM that I'm currently running & it seems to have stabilized things within the ROM. But... ClockWork's recovery was still acting flaky last night. If I see any more issues in recovery I'll have to switch to AmonRa.

Are there enough Mac users to maybe get things rolling on that side of the pond? I feel somewhat excluded, as most people here are Windows users and haven't seen any dedicated info for those on OS X.

That would be called jail breaking and can be found over on the fanboys forum. Just kidding:)

Thank you for this wonderfully awesome thread. I am getting my sprint evo tomorrow. cant wait.

You are very welcome. We are here if you need any assistance.

I didnt know that stickying this would get people this happy.lol
You're welcome guys. ;) This just seems VERY helpful for me.

Well thank you very much for the Sticky. Yeah, we are Android users. it's the little things that get us excited. Not like those over at Apple who expect huge advancements every day. (ie: One new device every few years, rather than us, a new device every few weeks.) Always advancing! Each day. Heck, we even have the KindleColor 'rooted' with Android on it. ;)

Well, hit me up with how to go through Section 1 & 2 with a Mac and I can post it up as an Alternative to the Windows for thoes iOS users! Or SOi, whatever. :p

Hush.. We must let the non-believers be converted to the way of the Android. ;)

Now, my announcement!

Just got the PowerMat for the EVO and I must say.. VERY NICE.
It is very small and easily portable. Fits anywhere. Even in my front shirt pocket. The cord wraps itself up on it'self with is very handy. You have a new cover to replace the HTC cover, which has it's own Chrome-ish Logo look, which better than their previous one.
It has a great sound effect when it's fully docked and has two lights that illuminate when it begins charging. Not sure if I will enjoy that or not when I hit the hay, tonight.
I only have two main problems with the PowerMat kit. Not anything big, surely not taking it back, it's too awesome!
The replacement cover has a odd feel to it and when you press against the door, it shifts and sounds like it is sticking against the sensor/receiver in the cover it'self.
The charger port add-on is kind of in the way with my current holster, but not by much. I am sure I will be more aware of it when I put my phone into it. I'll just have to adjust how I put it into the holster.
But overall, it's a great device for us tech-junkies.

$59.99 From Best Buy, $64.94 with tax. (Texas)
I highly recommend this product.

I also Updated to the CyanogenMod 6.1.0-RC2 and it has had a noticeable Speed tweak from the previous RC1. It's very smooth and as far as I can see, nice and stable.
The only other advancement is the addition of a LockScreen Gesture system. This allows you to pre-load gestures to use while on the lockscreen. Open apps, webpages, shortcuts and more. Very nice addition to an even nicer ROM.

Im sorry if this has been answered. Just looking for a quick response. Has the stock evo 2.2 been rooted yet? I also got the update thanksgiving. Thank u

Depends, some stock 2.2s have been Rooted. But the ones with build 3.30+ have not. New HBoot loader preventing them from being rooted by current Unrevoked method.
