Root ROOTING For Dummies

OK i did everything until #7 and it seems to have worked. I am not sure which ROM I should use and how to do it. Before I did it with ROM manager but I dont have access to that yet. It still gets stuck on the HTC screen. How do I flash a ROM in recovery and which ROM should I use. I would like one that is closest to the stock- no more troubles.

I really appreciate your help. The Evo would have become my fanciest door stopper!

Refer back to the beginning of this thread in the "After Rooting" section, it gives you a step by step on where to find ROM's and flash them.

So you're saying now have s-off, and successfully flashed the working recovery from hboot (as a pc36img file)? What ROM did you try to flash before? At this point, with a working recovery and s-off, it doesn't much matter what you flash, so let's go with whatever you were trying to get. You'll just need to mount your sd card over usb to your computer, copy the zip over, then flash it from recovery. I can give you more instructions if you can tell me what you want to flash.

Oh, and to all those who ever think they've bricked their phones - it doesn't matter how screwed up things are. If you can get to hboot, your phone is not bricked (generally ;))

I was trying to get the amon rom with rom manager.

I was trying to get the amon rom with rom manager.

Not sure what that is. You can find the list of all available Evo roms here:

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

Find the one you want
download the zip file for it
boot into recovery
plug your phone into your computer via usb
select the usb-ms tolggle option in recovery
browse your sdcard from your computer
copy the zip file to the root of your sdcard
disable usb-ms toggle in recovery
unplug the phone
Follow Section 3 under "After Rooting" in the OP for recovery (not rom manager)

Yes i found that out quick. It seems like its actually really hard to brick your phone.

The performance/battery life doesn't depend so much on the ROM as much as it does on the kernel. Other factors go into having great battery life (ie: using setcpu to underclock or collins_ph battery tweak).

Here's a link to some really good kernels that have been known to extend battery life.

[KERNEL][SENSE] - SBC. Update: 12/31/10! HTC kernel #15 SBC v7 - xda-developers

As for the ROM's, I would recommend you try out and few and see which one fits you and your EVO best.

OK, I am done with the new ROM (Frenchy714 I used the RLS4 like you). It is all working now. Thank you frenchy714 & akazabam for saving my phone. I really really appreciate what you both did for me today.

The guide states that the higher hboot versions are unrootable. May someone please clarify. I have hboot version 2.10. What guide should I follow and where can I find a fully updated novice guide?

I am trying to try out some new ROMS. Following the instructions using the recovery method in the OP. I keep running into a problem. It boots up, says installing copying etc....then it says Failure at line 15 (or 7 or 5) then says installation aborted. Not sure how to correct this. Thanks again.

1) Boot into recovery
2) You say you have RA, so select the option for USB-MS toggle with your phone connected to your computer via USB
3) Download and rename the following file to PC36IMG.zip:

Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Make sure you don't accidentally rename it to something like PC36IMG.zip.zip (window, by default, hides extensions).

4) Copy that file to the root of your sd card (you can browse your sd card on your computer at this point.

5) Close the USB-MS toggle mode in recovery, and unplug your phone.

6) Turn the phone off, then boot back into hboot, where it will prompt you flash the pc36img file.

7) Once that finishes, you should have a version of RA that will work for you. You can then flash whatever rom it was you were trying to before. Make sure to wipe data/dalvik/cache, of course.

8) Once you have a bootable rom, you can use ROM manager to reflash CW, if you like, and restore your nandroid backup. Before you do that, though, open a terminal emulator and type "cat /proc/mtd" without quotes. If your erase size is 40000, as I suspect, then that is most definitely why your current RA doesn't work. If you want CW back, do not flash 2.5.0.1 if this is the case.

9) If you want to keep RA, I suggest you flash RA 2.1.1 from ROM manager. Let me know if any of these steps don't work.

Question on step 8: I ran emulator and yes my erase size for all categories was 4K. i am not sure what my next step should be. are you saying i shouldn't restore my nandroid backup?
Also how do i restore the nandroid backup?

You can if you want, I suppose. It's just that CW 3.0.x.x is not working correctly (for the reasons in the link that Matlock just posted). If that's the version you created your nandroid backup with, you could probably flash it, restore you backup, then I would suggest going to a different recovery - either RA 2.1.1 or try out the new CW 2.6.

thanks for all the great info and support. I have looked high and low but have not seen anybody else with this problem. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or what.

I am at step five, verifying WiMax keys. When I type it out, I hit enter and it tells me...

"grep : not found"

Any ideas?

Did you make sure to type it exactly like it is shown? Capitalized, spaced?

grep_RSA_/dev/mtd/mtd0

RSA should be caps. Before and after RSA should be spaced.

Try that out.

Also, if you just ROOTed and have not flashed a ROM, you should still have your WiMax keys safe.

wow thanks for the quick reply. Yes I spaced them, at the end is that a zero or a capital o?

I tried both but nothing.

I have rooted but not flashed anything yet, I am not in a 4G area so I can't check :(

Lets check this way then..

Have you Flashed either ClockworkMod or Amon_RA and made a Nand backup?

If so, then open a File Explorer program like Astro File Manager. Go into the folders..
/sdcard/clockworkmod(or amonra)/backup/

There should be a file with your most current backup. Open it and see if there is a file called.. wimax.img. If the file as any size to it, about 12MB, it should contain your RSA Keys and you should be good to go.

Used the guide and the latest unrevoked3 last night and after the first failure I went ahead and reset the phone and tried again and everything went through perfectly. Flashed the latest Fresh and all is well.

Thanks to all for the discussion and the guides.
